vaishampAyana uvAcha
bR^ihaspatestu vachanaM shrutvA satyaM samIritam |
bhUyaH prajajvAla raNe haviSheva mahAmakhe ||3-63-1
vaishampAyana said:
Hearing the truthful words of bR^ihaspati, the fire blazed in the battle
again like the fire blazes in a great sacrifice with oblations.
hatAstu mAyA daityAnAM pradIptenAgninA raNe |
hatamAyA hatabalA baliM te samupasthitAH ||3-63-2
The fire blazing in the battle destroyed the illusions created by the sons
of diti. The sons of diti, with their illusions and power destroyed,
approached bali.
parAjiteShu daityeShu vahninAdbhutakarmaNA |
prahrAdastUttaraM vAkyamAha daityapatiM balim ||3-63-3
As the lord of fire, who performs wonderful deeds defeated the sons of diti,
prahrAda spoke about the best course of action to bali.
bhavAnagnishcha vAyushcha bhAskaraH salilaM shachI |
nakShatrANi disho vyoma bhUshcha dAnavasattamama ||3-63-4
(prahrAda said:) O the best among the sons of danu! You are agni, the lord
of fire. You are the lord of wind, the sun, the water and the moon. You are
the stars and the directions. You are the sky as well as the earth.
bhavishyaM chaiva bhUtaM cha bhavachchAsurasattama |
O the best among demons! You are the future, past as well as the present.
dattaM chaitadbhagavatA varadena svayaMbhuvA 3-63-5
indratvaM chAmaratvaM cha yuddhe chApyaparAjayaH |
IshitvaM cha vashitvaM cha balaM chaivAmitaM shubham ||3-63-6
The self born, the one who gives boons, the lord brahma, has given you
boon to become indra, to be immortal and no defeat (victory) in battle,
supremacy, freedom of will, power as well as boundless good.
sarvabhUteshvaratvaM cha daityarAja sadA tava |
mahAyogIshvaratvaM cha shUratvaM cha mahAmR^idhe ||3-63-7
aNimA laghimA chaiva ye chAnye sAttvikA guNAH |
The lord has also given you, O the king of the sons of diti, the eternal
lordship of all beings, the lordship of great performers of yoga and
valiance in great battles, aNimA, lightness and other noble qualities.
tatparAjitya daityendra devAnsarvAMshcha sAnugAn ||3-63-8
yathoktaM brahmaNA rAjaMstattathA na tadanyathA |
Hence, O the indra (king) of the sons of diti! Defeat all deva-s along with
their followers. O king! Achieve what is spoken by lord brahma. It can not
happen otherwise.
tasya tadvachanaM shrutvA prahrAdasya mahAtmanaH |
baliH paramasaMhR^iShTaH prAyAchChakrarathaM prati ||3-63-9
(vaishampAyana said: O janamejaya!) Hearing the words spoken by the great
soul prahrAda, the highly pleased bali proceeded towards the chariot of
shakra (indra ).
    tataH prayAntaM tridashendrasannidhau
        mahAsurendraM balimuttamashriyam |
    tama~njasA jagmurabhipradakShiNaM
        dvijAshcha puNyAH pashavashcha sattamAH ||36-3-10
As the great indra (king) of demons, bali, with best prosperity, approached
near the indra of deva-s, then the virtous twice-borns (dvijA)
and venerable pashu-s circumambulated the best one, bali.
    mahAjaTAbhAradharAstapasvina-
        stadA tamAhurvidhimantrama~NgalaiH |
    abhiShTuvantaH kavayaH svala~NkR^itam
        baliM prayAntaM raNamUrdhani sthitAH ||3-63-11
The performers of great penances, having great load of twisted hair locks,
pronounced auspicious wishes and blessings as ordained to bali.
The wise persons praised the highly decorated bali, standing at the
forefront of battle.
    prataptajAmbUnadachitrabhUShaNai-
        rdivyaishcha ratnairvividhairala~NkR^itaH |
    virAjamAnaH parameNa varchasA
        raNe vibhAtyagnishikheva dAnavaH ||3-63-12
The son of danu decorated by ornaments sparkling like molten gold and
varieties of divine jewels, dazzled the most with splendor in the battle
field like a blazing flame of fire.
    sa vai tadA shatrubalArditaM balam
        balirdadarshottamasattvavIryavAn |
    jalAgame shrImadivAbhramaNDalaM
        vishIryamANaM nabhasIva vAyunA ||3-63-13
The valiant bali saw his own army oppressed by the enemy's army like a
group of white clouds, scattered in the sky by wind, at the arrival of
water bearing clouds.
    tato dadarshAtha balAni sarvato
        raNe praguptAni hutAshanena vai |
    samuchChritAnyugratarANi tatra vai
        samudravegAniva parvasandhiShu ||3-63-14
Then bali saw all his armies being broken in the battle by the consumer of
oblations like the high tides in the ocean at the juncture
of parva.
    sashUlashaktyR^iShTigadAsisAyakA-
        nkShipanripUNAM samare mahAtmanAm |
    nanAda siMharShabhamattanAgava-
        jjalAgame toyadavachcha vIryavAn ||3-63-15
He showered spears (shUla), darts (shakti), lances (R^iShTi),
maces (gada) swords (asi) and arrows (sAyaka) on the great souls,
the enemy, in the battle. The valiant bali roared like a lion, bull as well
as an elephant in rut and also thundered like a water bearing cloud, in the
battle field.
    divyAstradhUmaH subhujogravAyu-
        rmahAbalaH pauruShavikramendhanaH |
    prajA didhakShanniva kAlavahniH
        sughorarUpo vibabhau raNe baliH ||3-63-16
The divine arrows were his smoke. His powerful arms produced a terrible
wind. The highly powerful bali was fuelled by the valiance of his manpower.
The valiant bali, with his auspicious and fearful form sparkled in
the battle, like the fire at the end of the era, burning the entire world.
