kathaM cha tridivaM labdhaM bhUyo devairdvijottama ||3-66-1
janamejaya said:
O sage! (O vaishampAyana!) What did the deva-s, defeated by the sons of diti do? O the best among the twice-borns! How did the deva-s regain the heaven?
vaishampAyana uvAcha
shrutvA vANIM tu tAM divyAM saha devaiH surAdhipaH |
prAgdishaM prasthitaH shrImAnadityAlayamuttamam ||3-66-2
vaishampAyana said:
(O janamejaya!) Hearing those divine (body-less) words (in the battle field), the auspicious king of deva-s, along with deva-s proceeded to the direction of east, to the best abode of aditi.
(see verses 3-64-22 to 28)
prApyAdityAlayaM shakraH kathayAmAsa tAM giram |
adityAM sA yathA yuddhe tena vANI purA shrutA ||3-66-3
Arriving at the abode of aditi, shakra (indra) told aditi about the auspicious words, as he heard them before, in the battle field.

yadyevaM putra yushmAbhirna shakyo hantumAhave |
balirvirochanasutaH sarvaishchaiva marudgaNaiH ||3-66-4
aditi said:
If it is so, my son, you will not be able to kill bali, the son of virochana, in the battle even with all the groups of the wind gods (maruts).
sahasrashirasA hantuM kevalaM shakyate.asuraH |
tenaikena sahasrAkSha na hyanyena shatakrato ||3-66-5
The demon can be killed only by the one with thousand heads. O the one with thousand eyes! O the one who performed one hundred sacrifices! Only he will be able to kill him and none other.
tadvaH pR^ichChasva pitaraM kashyapaM satyavAdinaM |
parAjayArthaM daityasya balestasya mahAtmanaH ||3-66-6
Hence ask your father, kashyapa, the one who is fixed on truth, for the defeat of the son of diti, bali, the great soul.
tato.adityA saha surAH saMprAptAH kashyapAntikam |
apashyankashyapaM tatra muniM divyataponidhim ||3-66-7
(vaishampAyana continued: O janamejaya!) Then the deva-s, along with aditi, arrived near kashyapa. All of them saw the sage kashyapa, the divine treasure of penance.
AdyaM devaM guruM divyaM klinnaM triShavaNAmbubhiH |
tejasA bhAskarAkAraM gauramagnishikhAprabham ||3-66-8
They saw the foremost, divine preceptor of deva-s, whose body was wet with water (due to taking bath) thrice. By splendor he was like the sun. His yellow colour was dazzling like the flame of fire.
nyastadaNDaM tapoyuktaM baddhakR^iShNAjinottaram |
valkalAjinasaMvItaM pradIptaM brahmavarchasA ||3-66-9
He had abandoned his staff. He was yoked with penance. The upper part of his body was covered with the skin of black antelope. He was wearing the tree-bark and the skin of black antelope. He was blazing with the splendor of brahma.
hUtAshamiva dIpyantamAjyamantrapuraskR^itam |
svAdhyAyanirataM shAntaM vapuShmantamivAnalam ||3-66-10
He was blazing like the partaker of oblations, fire, honoured with the oblations and chanting. He was always engaged in recitation, calm. He appeared like the fire in body form.
taM brahmavAdinAM shreShThaM surAsuraguruM prabhum |
pratapantamivAdityaM mArIchaM dIptatejasam ||3-66-11
He was the follower of brahma. He was the lord, the best, the preceptor of deva-s and demons. The son of sage mariachi (kashyapa), blazed with splendor like the blazing sun.
yaH sraShTA sarvabhUtAnAM prajAnAM patiruttamaH |
AtmabhAvavisheSheNa tR^itIyo yaH prajApatiH ||3-66-12
He was the creator of all beings. He was the foremost lord of beings. He was the third lord of beings (first brahma, second marIchi) with special nature of the soul.
tataH praNamya te vIrAH sahAdityA surarShabhAH |
UchuH prA~njalayaH sarve brahmANamiva mAnasAH ||3-66-13
The valiant, the bulls of the deva-s, along with aditi, paid obeisance to sage kashyapa, like the mind born sons pay obeisance to brahma and told him with folded hands:
tachChrutaM yudhi shakreNa sarasvatyA samIritaM |
ajeyastridashaiH sarvairbalirdAnavasattamaH ||3-66-14
(deva-s said) The words of sarasvati (body-less words) heard by shakra (indra) in the battle field are thus: bali, the best among the sons of danu can not be conquered by the deva-s.
shrutvA tu vachanaM teShAM putrANAM kashyapastadA |
chakAra gamane buddhiM brahmalokAya lokakR^it ||3-66-15
(vaishampAyana continued: O janamejaya!) Hearing the words spoken by his sons, kashyapa, the creator of the world, decided in his mind to go to the world of brahma.
kashyapa uvAcha
gachChAma brahmasadanaM brahmaghoShaninAditaM |
yathAshrutaM cha tatraiva brahmaNe vadatAnaghAH ||3-66-16
kashyapa said:
Let us go the house of brahma, resounded by the sound of brahma. Let us tell the sinless brahma, what you heard in the battle field.
vaishampAyana uvAcha
tato.adityA saha surA yAntaM kashypamanvayuH |
prasthitaM brahmasadanaM devarShigaNasevitaM ||3-66-17
vaishampAyana said:
(O janamejaya!) Then the deva-s, along with aditi, followed kashyapa in the journey to the abode of brahma, served by the groups of deva sages.
te muhUrtena saMprAptA brahmalokaM divaukasaH |
divyaiH kAmagamairyAnairmahArhaiH sumanoharaiH ||3-66-18
Within a moment, the deva-s reached the world of brahma using divine, splendid and beautiful carriers, which travel as desired.
didR^ikShavaste brahmANaM tapaso rAshimavyayam |
abhyagachChanta vistIrNAM brahmaNaH paramAM sabhAm ||3-66-19
There they entered the foremost, wide , assembly of brahma, to see brahma, having the wealth of penance without any decline.
ShaTpadodgItaninadAM sAmagItavimishritAm |
shreyaskarImamitraghnIM dR^iShTvA sa~njahR^iShurmudA ||3-66-20
They became happy to see the world of brahma sounding with the songs of bees (having six legs) along with the song of sAma (veda), causing prosperity, destroying the enemies.
brAhmaNaishcha mahabhAgairvedavedA~NgapAragaiH |
R^icho bahvR^ichamukhyaishcha shikShAvidbhistathA dvijaiH |
shabdanirvachanArthaM cha preryamANapadAkSharAH ||3-66-21
There the highly fortunate brAhmins, experts of vedas and vedA~Nga-s, experts of many R^iks, experts of teaching, were reciting the vedic mantras, along with the proper pronunciation, expressing the meanings of letters and words.
shushruvuste.amaravyAghrA vitateShu cha karmasu |
yaj~navedA~NgaviduShAM padakramavidAM tathA ||3-66-22
There, the tigers of the deva-s heard the recitals of the experts of sacrifices and vedA~Nga-s, experts of the words in proper order along with rituals.
ghoSheNa paramarShINAM sA babhUva ninAditA |
yaj~nasaMstavavidbhishcha shikShAvidbhistathA dvijaiH ||3-66-23
The assembly resounded loudly with the sounds of the great sages and brahmins, experts of rituals of sacrifices, and expert teachers.
shabdanirvachanArthaj~naiH sarvavidyAvishAradaiH |
mImAMsAhitavAkyaj~naiH sarvavAdavishAradaiH ||3-66-24
hR^iShTapuShTasvaraistatra dvijendravalguvAdibhiH |
nAditaM brahmasadanaM pravaraM devasadmavat ||3-66-25
The abode (world) of brahma, resounding with the sounds of those experts of the definition of sounds and meanings, experts of all knowledge, experts of the pleasing words of explanation of vedic texts, experts of all kinds of arguments, the twice borns, who can argue beautifully, having happy and healthy sounds was the best, comparable to the abode of deva-s.
te tatra samanuprApya shR^iNvanto vai dhvanim surAH |
pUtAnyAtmasharIrANi menire tu na saMshayaH ||3-66-26
the deva-s, arriving there, heard those sounds. There is no doubt that they considered that their souls and bodies were purified by the sounds.
tUShNiMbhUtA ekachittA brahmanyagatamAnasAH |
vismayotphullanayanA nirIkShantaH parasparam ||3-66-27
Without uttering anything, having a single mind, with their minds concentrated on brahma, with their eyes wide open with wonder, they looked at each other.
namaskurvanti cha punarguruM lokaguruM prabhum |
manasaiva surashreShThAH puraskR^itya tu kashyapam ||3-66-28
The best among deva-s, paid obeisance to the preceptor of the world, the lord, keeping kashyapa in front in their minds.
punaH saMpUjya paramaM vedochchAraNaniHsvanam |
gambIrodAramadhuraM susvaraM haMsagadgadam ||3-66-29
They again worshipped the foremost sound of reciting the veda, deep, kind, sweet and good sound, the utterance of swans.
aikyanAnAtvasaMyogasamavAyavishAradaiH |
lokAyatikamukhyaishcha shushruvuH svanamIritam ||3-66-30
ekatvavAda (the unity of jIvA and Ishvara), nAnAtvavAda (the diversity of the trinity (jIva, Ishvara and prakR^iti)), saMyogavAda (union of prakR^iti and puruSha for creation), samavAyavAda (samavAya - sixth category of vaisheShika) and lokAyatika (lokAyata - materialism. However, see nIlakaNTha commentary) - the deva-s heard the words pronounced by the experts of all knowledge.

The sons of kashyapa (deva-s) saw the indras (kings) of brahmins leading a controlled life, observing penances and engaged in chanting and conducting sacrifices.
tasyAM sabhAyAmAste sma brahmA lokapitAmahaH |
surAsuraguruH shrImAnvidhivaddevamAyayA ||3-66-32
The auspicious brahma, the great grandfather of the world, the preceptor of deva-s and asura-s is seated in that assembly, as ordained, by the devamAyA.
upAsate cha tatrainaM prajAnAM patayaH prabhum |
dakShaH prachetAH pulaho marIchishcha dvijottamaH ||3-66-33
The lord is being served by the lords of beings - dakSha, pracheta, pulaha, marIchi, the best among the twice borns.
bhR^iguratrirvasiShThashcha gautamo nAradastathA |
manurdyaurantarikShaM cha vAyustejo jalaM mahI ||3-66-34
bhR^igu, atri, vasiShTha, gautama, nArada, manu, dyau, antarIkSha, the lord of wind (vAyu), fire, water and the earth,
shabdasparshau cha rUpaM cha raso gandhastathaiva cha |
prakR^itishcha vikArAshcha yachchAnyatkAraNaM mahat ||3-66-35
the sound, touch, shape, taste, smell, nature and emotions as well as other causes,
sA~NgopA~NgAshchaturvedAH sarahasyapadakramAH |
kriyAshcha kratavashchaiva sa~NkalpaH prANa eva cha ||3-66-36
all the four vedas and their a~nga-s and upA~Nga-s, along with their secrets and word order, actions, sacrifices, imagination as well as life forces,
ete chAnye cha bahavaH svayambhuvamupasthitAH |
artho dharmashcha kAmashcha dveSho darpashcha nityadA ||3-66-37
all these as well as many others were serving the self born. Wealth, dharma, desire, hatred and pride, always,
shakro bR^ihaspatishchaiva saMvarto budha eva cha |
shanaishcharo.atha rAhushcha grahAH sarve hyasheShataH ||3-66-38
shakra (indra), the preceptor of deva-s, bR^ihaspati, saMvarta as well as budha (son of soma), Saturn who moves slowly, rAhu and all the planets without any omission,
maruto vishvakarmA cha nakShatrANi cha bhArata |
divAkarashcha somashcha brahmANaM samupAsate || 3-66-39
all the groups of marut-s, vishvakarmA, the stars, O the one of bharata race (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued), the lord of the day (sun) and the moon (soma) were serving the lord brahma.
sAvitrI durgataraNI vANI saptavidhA tathA |
sarvANi shrutishAstrANi gAthAshcha niyamAstathA |
bhAshyANi sarvashAstrANi dehavanti vishAMpate || 3-66-40
O the ruler of earth! (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued) The goddesses sAvitrI, durgA who helps to cross over difficult paths, vANI the goddess of seven sounds, all kinds of oral sacred knowledge, treatises, songs and rules, explanations of all treatises - all were serving brahma in body form.
kShaNA lavA muhUrtAshcha divA rAtrishcha bhArata |
ardhamAsAshcha mAsAshcha R^itavaH ShaTtathaiva cha |
kShaNa (a division of time), lava (1/60 of twinkling), muhUrta (48 minutes), day and night, O the one of bharata race (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued), half-month, month, and all the six seasons,
saMvatsarAshchaturyugaM mAsA rAtrishchaturvidhA ||3-66-41
the year, the four eras, month and the four kinds of night,
kAlachakraM cha yaddivyamanityaM dhruvamavyayam |
ete chAnye cha bahavaH svayambhuvamupasthitAH ||3-66-42
the divine, fixed, great wheel of time, not eternal (anityaM) yet having no decline and many others were serving the self born.
te praviShTAH sabhAM divyAM brahmaNaH sarvakAmadAm |
kashyapastridashaiH sArdhaM putrairdharmavishAradaiH ||3-66-43
kashyapa, the expert of dharma, along with his sons, the deva-s, entered the divine assembly of brahma, capable of giving all desires.
sarvatejomayIM divyAM brahmarShigaNasevitAm |
The divine assembly, having all kinds of splendor, was served by the brahma sages.
brAhmyA shriyA dIpyamAnamachintyaM vigataklamam ||3-66-44
brahmANaM vIkShya te sarve AsInaM paramAsane |
All of them saw the blazing brahma, who can not be conceived, who was not having any fatigue, seated in the assembly with prosperity.
jagmurmUrdhnA shubhau pAdau brahmaNaste divaukasaH ||3-66-45
All the deva-s bowed to the auspicious feet of brahma by touching them with their heads.
shirobhiH spR^ishya charaNau tasya te parameShThinaH |
vimuktAH sarvapApebhyaH shAntA vigatakalmaShAH ||3-66-46
By touching the feet of the supreme lord with their heads all the deva-s became released from all sins. They became calm with all their sins removed.
dR^iShTvA tu tAnsurAnsarvAnkashyapena sahAgatAn |
ahA brahmA mahAtejA devAnAM prabhurIshvaraH ||3-66-47
The lord, the highly splendorous lord of deva-s, seeing all the deva-s who arrived along with kashyapa, spoke.
