    Lesson 67 - kashyapa and others commence penance, on brahma's advice

yadarthamiha saMprAptA bhavantaH sarva eva hi |
vijAnAmyahamavyagra etatsarvaM mahAbalAH ||3-67-1
brahma said:
O the powerful ones! I, who pay attention to all details, know all the reasons for which all of you have come here.
bhaviShyati cha vaH so.arthaH kA~NkShito yaH surottamAH |
balerdAnavamukhyasya yo vijetA bhaviShyati ||3-67-2
O the best among deva-s! All that you desire will happen so. The one who will conquer the chief of the sons of danu, bali,
na khalvasurasa~NghAnAmeko jetA sa vishvakR^it |
trailokyasyApi jetAsau devAnAmapi chottamaH ||3-67-3
He is the only one creator of the world, who can conquer the groups of demons. He will conquer the three worlds. He will be the best among the deva-s.
dhAtA chaiva hi lokAnAM vishvayoniH sanAtanaH |
pUrvadehaM sadA prAhurhemagarbhanidarshanam ||3-67-4
He is the creator of the world. The eternal one is the source of the world. He, the one who is in the golden womb, is the foremost one, from whose body I was born.
AtmA devena vibhunA kR^ito.ajeyo mahAtmanaH |
The great soul, the Lord, has made the supreme soul, not to be conquered by any one.
balerasuramukhyasya vishvasya jagatastathA ||3-67-5
prabhavaH sa hi sarveShAmasmAkamapi pUrvajaH |
He is the source of all - bali, the chief of demons, the world and the universe. He, the one who was born before is the source of all of us as well.
achintyaH sa hi vishvAtmA yogayuktaH paraMtapaH ||3-67-6
He, the soul of the universe, can not be thought of. He is yoked with yoga, the one who destroys enemies.
taM devApi mahAtmAnaM na viduH ko.apyasAviti |
vedAtmAnaM cha vishvaM cha sadevaH puruShottamaH ||3-67-7
Even the deva-s do not know who the great soul is. The best among men, is the soul of vedas, the world and the soul of deva-s.
tasyaiva tu prasAdena pravakShye.ahaM parAM gatim |
yatra yogaM samAsthAya tapashcharati dushcharam ||3-67-8
With his pleasure, I shall speak about the ultimate refuge, where, taking up yoga, he performs highly difficult penance.
kShIrodasyottare kUle udIchyAM dishi devatAH |
amR^itaM nAma paramaM sthAnamAhurmanIShiNaH |
bhavantastatra vai gatvA tapasA saMshitavratAH ||3-67-9
O deva-s! On the northern bank of the milk ocean, in the north direction, those with intellect, speak about a superior place called amR^itaM. All of you, who observe vows with penances, shall go there.
amR^itaM sthAnamAsAdya tapashcharata dushcharam |
Arriving at the place called amR^itaM, perform highly difficult penance.
tatra shroShyatha vispaShTAM snigdhagambhIraniHsvanAm ||3-67-10
uShNage toyapUrNasya toyadasya samasvanAm |
There you shall hear a clear, friendly and deep sound, equal to the thunder of water bearing cloud full of water, in the rainy season.
yuktAkSharapadasnigdhAM ramyAmabhayadAM shivAm ||3-67-11
vANIM paramasaMskArAM varadAM brahmavAdinIm |
That speech will be with appropriate letters and words, friendly, beautiful, providing refuge, auspicious, highly cultivated, boon-giving, along with brahma words.
divyAM sarasvatIM satyAM sarvakilbiShanashiNIm ||3-67-12
sarvadevAdhidevasya bhAShitAM bhAvitAtmanaH |
Those words of sarasvatI will be divine, truthful and destroying all sins, spoken by the Lord of all deva-s, who is having the supreme soul.
tasya vratasamAptau tu yAvadvratavisarjanam ||3-67-13
amoghasya tu devasya vishvedevA mahAtmanaH |
Those words will be spoken by the Lord having no sins, the lord of the world, the great soul, at the end of the vow, as the vows conclude.
svAgataM vaH surashreShThA matsakAshe vyavasthitAH ||3-67-14
kasya kiM vA varaM devA dadAmi varadaH sthitaH |
O the best among deva-s! O those who have come near me! I welcome you. What boon shall I, who is capable of giving boons, shall give you and to whom?
taM kashyapo.aditishchaiva varaM gR^ihNIta vai tataH ||3-67-15
praNamya shirasA pAdau tasmai yogAtmane tadA |
(vaishaMpAyana said) Saying that let us ask for boons, kashyapa and aditi, bowed with their heads touching the feet of the one whose soul is yoked with yoga.
bhavAneva cha naH putro bhavatviti na saMshayaH ||3-67-16
uktashcha parayA bhaktyA tathAstviti sa vakShyati |
(brahma said) If you ask him that you shall become our son, without any doubt, and with high devotion, he will say, let it be.
devA bruvantu taM sarve bhrAtA nastvaM bhaveti ha ||3-67-17
Let all deva-s ask him to become their brother.
tathAstviti cha sa shrImAnvakShyate sarvalokakR^it ||3-67-18
The auspicious lord, the creator of all the worlds will say, let it be.
tasmAdevaM gR^ihItvA tu varaM tridashasattamAH |
kR^itakR^ityAH punaH sarve gachChadhvaM svaM svamAlayam ||3-67-19
O the best among deva-s! Getting a boon like this from him, with a feeling of having done what is to be done, all shall return to their own abodes.
tathAstviti surAH sarve kashyapo.aditireva cha |
vanditvA brahmacharaNau gatAH saumyAM dishaM prati ||3-67-20
Saying that let it be, all the deva-s, kashyapa, as well as aditi bowed to the feet of brahma and proceeded to the gentle, northern direction.
te.achireNaiva saMprAptAH kShirodasyottaraM taTam |
yathoddiShTaM bhagavatA brahmaNA brahmavAdinA ||3-67-21
Without much delay, they reached the northern bank of the milk ocean, as spoken by the lord brahma, fixed in the principle of brahma.
te.atItya sAgarAnsarvAnparvatAMshcha bahUnkShaNAt |
nadyashcha vividhA divyAH pR^ithivyAM surasattamAH ||3-67-22
They, the best among deva-s, crossed all the oceans, many mountains and varieties of divine rivers of the earth, within a short time.
pashyanti cha sughorAM vai sarvasattvavivarjitAm |
abhAskarAmamaryAdAM tamasA saMvR^itAM disham |
Then they saw a highly terrible place, devoid of all beings, devoid of sun, having no limits and fully covered by darkness.
amR^itaM sthAnamAsAdya kashyapena suraiH saha ||3-67-23
dIkShitAH kAmadaM divyaM vrataM varShasahasrakam |
Reaching the place of amR^itaM, kashyapa, along with deva-s observed a divine, desire-yielding vow for one thousand years,
prasAdArthaM sureshAya tasmai yogAya dhImate |
nArAyaNAya devAya sahasrAkShAya dhImate ||3-67-24
to please the lord of deva-s, the one yoked with yoga, the one with intellect, the lord nArAyaNa, the one with thousand eyes, the one having high intellect.
brahmacharyeNa maunena sthAnavIrAsanena cha |
damena cha surAH sarve tapo dushcharamAsthitAH ||3-67-25
All the deva-s observed the highly difficult penance with celibacy, silence, adopting the vIrAsana position, and self control, standing on an elevated spot.
kashyapastatra bhagavAnprasAdArthaM mahatmanaH |
udIrayati vedoktaM yamAhuH paramaM stavam ||3-67-26
There, lord kashyapa recited the highest hymn as stated in veda to please the great soul.

This is the sixty-seventh lesson of bhaviShyaparva, harivaMsha, khila of mahAbhArata, in the manifestation of vAmana, kashyapa and others commence penance, on brahma's advice
