vaishampAyana uvAcha
nArAyaNastu bhagavA~ChrutvaitatparamaM stavam |
brahmaj~nena dvijendreNa kashyapena samIritam ||3-69-1
vaishampAyana said:
(O janamejaya!) On hearing the most excellent hymn, recited by kashyapa, the indra (king) of the twice-born, the expert of the knowledge of brahma, lord nArAyaNa,
snigdhagambIranirghoShajImUtasvananiHsvanam |
manasA prItiyuktena vibudhAnAM mahAtmanAm ||3-69-2
in a smooth, deep and loud voice, like the thunder of a cloud, with a mind pleased with the great souls, the deva-s,
uvAcha vachanaM samyag-hR^iShTapuShTapadAkSharam |
spoke the following words along with letters and words flourishing with meanings:
AkAshAchChushruve shabdo darshanaM nopalabhyate |
Only the sound of the lord was heard in the sky. The vision of the lord was not available.
shrImAnprItamanA devaH provAcha prabhurIshvaraH ||3-69-3
The auspicious lord was pleased. The lord, the god (nArAyaNa, viShNu) said.

prIto.asmi vaH surashreShThAH sarve matto vinishchayam |
varaM vR^iNuta bhadram vo varado.asmi surottamAH ||3-69-4
viShNu said:
I am pleased with you, O the best among deva-s! All of you may definitely seek boons from me. Let there be good to you. O the best among deva-s! I am the one who gives boons.
kashyapa uvAcha
yadaiva bhagavAnprItaH sarveShAmamarottamaH |
tadaiva kR^itakR^ityAH sma tvaM hi naH paramA gatiH ||3-69-5
kashayapa said:
If the lord, the best among deva-s is pleased with all of us, we feel like having done what is to be done. You are our ultimate refuge.
yadi prasanno bhagavAndAtavyo vA varo yadi |
vAsavasyAnujo bhrAtA j~nAtInAM nandivardhanaH |
adityAM vAmanaH shrImAnbhagavAnastu vaH suraH ||3-69-6
If the lord is pleased and if the lord will give boon, the auspicious lord, the one who generates happiness for the acquaintances, shall be born as deva, the son of aditi, as the younger brother of vAsava (indra).
vaishampAyana uvAcha
aditirdevamAtA cha etamevArthamuttamam |
putrArthe varadaM prAha bhagavantaM varArthinI ||3-69-7
vaishampAyana said:
(O janamejaya!) The mother of deva-s, aditi, seeking the boon of a son, also told the same best matter to the lord (viShNu).
aditiruvAcha
yAche tvAM putrakAmA vai bhavAnputro bhavatviti |
niHshreyasAya sarveShAM devAnAM hi mahAtmanAm ||3-69-8
aditi said:
Desiring for a son, I request you that you shall become my son, for the good fortune of all the great souls, the deva-s.
devA UchuH
bhrAtA bhartA cha dAtA cha sharaNaM cha bhavasva naH |
deva-s said:
O lord! You are the ruler, provider and our ultimate refuge. Please become our brother.
adityAH putratAM yAte tvayi devAH savAsavAH |
devashabdaM vahiShyanti kashyapasyAtmajo bhava ||3-69-9
If you become the son of aditi, then all deva-s, along with indra will become carriers of the sound, deva. O lord! Please become the son of kashyapa.
vaishampAyana uvAcha
tatastAnabravIdviShNurdevAnkashyapameva cha |
evaM bhavatu bhadraM vo yatheShTaM kAmamApnuta |
vaishampAyana said:
(O janamejaya!) Then viShNu told the deva-s as well as kashyapa: Let it be so. Let there be good to you. You may obtain what you desire.
sarveShAmeva yuShmAkaM ye bhaviShyanti shatravaH ||3-69-10
muhUrtamapi te sarve na sthAsyanti mamAgrataH |
All of them, who are your enemies, will not be able to stand before me, even for a moment.
hatvAsuragaNAnsarvAnye chAnye devashatravaH ||3-69-11
kariShye devatAH sarvA yaj~nabhAgAgrabhojinaH |
Killing all the sons of danu and other enemies of deva-s, I will make all the deva-s, as the foremost partakers of sacrifices.
havyAdAMshcha surAnsarvAnkravyAdAMshcha pitR^Inapi ||3-69-12
kariShye vibudhashreShThAH pArameShThyena karmaNA |
I will make all the deva-s as the consumers of all oblations offered. I will make all ancestors as consumers of the offerings of shrAddha. I will establish all the best of deva-s by the actions of the superior lord.
yathAgatena mArgeNa nivartadhvaM surottamAH ||3-69-13
All the best among deva-s! You may go back by the same way you came.
devamAtustathAdityAH kashyapasyAmitAtmanaH |
yathAmanIShitaM kartA gachChadhvaM svaM svamAlayam ||3-69-14
I shall do as aditi, the mother of deva-s and kashyapa, the one with unbounded soul, wish. All of you may return to your own places.
vaishampAyana uvAcha
evamukte tu vachane viShNunA prabhaviShNunA |
devAH prahR^iShTamanasaH pUjayanti sma sarvashaH ||3-69-15
vaishampAyana said:
(O janamejaya!) As viShNu, the splendorous viShNu spoke these words all the deva-s became happy in their minds. All of them worshipped viShNu.
vishvedevA mahAtmAnaH kashyapo.aditireva cha |
sAdhyA marudgaNAshchaiva shakrashchaiva mahAbalaH |
namaskR^itya sureshAya tasmai devAya raMhase ||3-69-16
prayAtAH prAgdishaM divyaM vipulaM kashyapAshramam |
All the great souls, the vishvadeva-s, kashyapa, aditi, sAdhya-s, the group of maruts, as well as the powerful shakra (indra) paid obeisance to the lord of deva-s, the lord having great speed (raMhas - viShNu). Then all of them proceeded in the direction of east and reached the hermitage of kashyapa.
gatvA te AshramaM tatra brahmarShigaNasevitaM |
cheruH svAdhyAyaniyatA adityA garbhamIpsavavaH ||3-69-17
Reaching the hermitage served by the groups of brahma-sages, the deva-s, expecting the pregnancy of aditi, stayed there, engaged in reciting sacred texts.
aditirdevamAtA cha garbhaM dadhne.atitejasam |
bhUtAtmAnaM mahAtmAnaM divyaM varshasahasrakam ||3-69-18
aditi, the mother of deva-s, conceived the divine, great soul, the soul of all beings in a highly splendorous pregnancy for one thousand years.
pUrNe varshasahasre tu prasUtA garbhamuttamam |
surANAM sharaNaM devamasurANAM vinAshanam ||3-69-19
On the completion of one thousand years, she delivered the best conception, the lord, the refuge of all deva-s, the destroyer of asura-s.
garbhasthena tu devena paritrAtAH surAstadA |
AdadAnena tejAMsi trailokyasya mahAtmanA ||3-69-20
The lord, the great soul, the one who carries all the splendor in the three worlds, protected the deva-s, as he was in the womb.
tasmi~njAte tu devesha trailokyasya sukhAvahe |
bhayade daityasa~NghAnAM surANAM nandivardhane ||3-69-21
The lord of deva-s, the one who generates fear for the groups of the sons of diti and the one who increases the happiness of the deva-s, was born for the good of all the three worlds.
