vaishampAyana uvAcha
prajAnAM patayaH sapta sapta chaiva maharShayaH |
tasya devasya jAtasya namaskAraM prachakrire||3-70-1
vaishampAyana said:
All the seven lords of beings (marIchi, atri, a~Ngiras, pulastya, pulaha,
kratu, vasiShTha - see nIlakaNtha commentary) and all the seven sages
paid obeisance to the Lord who was born.
    bhAradhvAjaH kashyapo gautamashcha
        vishvAmitro jamadagnirvasiShThaH |
    yashchodito bhAskare saMpranaShTe
        so.apyatrAtrirbhagavAnAjagAma ||3-70-2
bharadhvAja, kashyapa, gautama, vishvAmitra, jamadagni, vasiShTha and lord
atri, who rose when the sun set, arrived there.
marIchira~NgirAshchaiva pulastyaH pulahaH kratuH |
dakShaprajApatishchaiva namaskAraM prachakrire ||3-70-3
marIchi, a~Ngiras, and also pulastya, pulaha, kratu as well as dakSha,
the lord of beings paid obeisance to the lord.
aurvo vasiShThaputrashcha stambaH kAshyapa eva cha |
kapIvAnkapIvAMshcha datto nishchyavanastathA ||3-70-4
aurva, the son of vasiShTha, stamba, kAshyapa, kapivAn, akapivAn,
and nishchyavana,
vasiShThaputrAH saptAsanvAsiShThA iti vishrutAH |
hiraNyagarbhasya sutAH pUrvajAtAH sutejasaH ||3-70-5
and vasiShThaputra-s - the famous seven sons of vasiShTha,
the splendorous sons of hiraNyagarbha who were born earlier, came and paid
obeisance to the lord.
gArgyaH pR^ithustathaivAnyo janyo vAmana eva cha |
devabAhuryadudhrashcha parjanyashchaiva somajaH ||3-70-6
gArgya, pR^ithu, janya, vAmana, devabAhu, yadudhra, and also soma's son,
parjanya,
hiraNyaromA vedashirAH saptanetrastathaiva cha |
vishvo.ativishvashchyavanaH sudhAmA virajAstathA ||3-70-7
atinAmA sahiShNushcha namaskAramakurvata |
hiraNyaroma, vedashira, saptanetra and also vishva, ativishva, chyavana,
sudhAma, viraja, atinAma and sahiShNu paid obeisance to the lord.
uddyotamAnA vapuShA sarvAbharaNabhUShitAH ||3-70-8
upanR^ityanti deveShaM viShNumapsarasAM varAH |
The divine women, with their sparkling body decorated with all kinds of
ornaments danced in front of the lord of deva-s, viShNu.
tato gandharvatUryeShu praNadatsu vihAyasi ||3-7-9
bahubhiH saha gandharvaiH prAgAyata cha tumburuH |
Then as the musical instruments of the gandharva-s were being played in the
sky, tumburu sang with many other gandharva-s.
mahAshrutishchitrashirA UrNAyuranaghastathA ||3-70-10
gomAyuH sUryavarchAshcha somavarchAshcha saptamaH |
mahAshruti, chitrashira, UrNAyu, anagha, gomAyu, suryavarcha and
somavarcha, the seventh,
yugapastR^iNapaH kArShNirnandishcha trishirAstathA ||3-70-11
yugapa, tR^iNapa, kArShNi, nandi, trishirA,
trayodashaH shAlishirAH parjanyashcha chaturdashaH |
kaliH pa~nchadashashchAtra tatraiva tu mahIpate ||3-70-12
the thirteenth shAlishira, parjanya, the fourteenth and kali the fifteenth
arrived there, O the lord of earth, (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued)
to pay obeisance to the lord.
dasha pa~ncha tvime proktA nAradashchaiva ShoDashaH |
hAhA hUhUshcha gandharvau haMsashchaiva mahAdyutiH ||3-70-13
sarve te devagandharvA upagAyanti keshavam |
All the above fifteen and nArada, the sixteenth, hAhA and also huhU,
the gandharvas and haMsa of great splendor - all the devagandharva-s
sang before keshava (vAmana-viShNu).
tathaivApsaraso hR^iShTAH sarvAla~NkArabhUShitAH ||3-70-14
vapuShmantaH sujaghanAH sarvA~NgashubhadarshanAH |
nanR^itushcha mahAbhAgA jagushchAyatalochanAH ||3-70-15
In the same way, all the divine women, the women of great fortune,
decorated by all kinds of ornaments, having beautiful body, hips and
buttocks, whose limbs are auspicious to see, having beautiful long eyes,
becoming happy, danced and sang.
sumadhyAshchArumadhyAshcha priyamukhyo varAnanAH |
The divine women were having beautiful waists. Their faces were auspicious
and beautiful.
anUkAtha tathA jAmI mishrakeshI tvalambuShA ||3-70-16
marIchiH shUchikAshchaiva vidyutpUrNA tilottamA |
adrikA lakShaNA chaiva rambhA tadvanmanoramA ||3-70-17
asitA cha subAhushcha supriyA subhagA tathA |
urvashI chitralekhA cha sugrIvA cha sulochanA ||3-70-18
puNDarIkA sugandhA cha surathA cha pramAthinI |
nandA shAradvatI chaiva tathAnyAstatra saMghashaH ||3-70-19
menakA sahajanyA cha parNikA pu~njikasthalA |
etAshchApsaraso.anyAshcha pranR^ityanti sahasrashaH ||3-70-20
The divine women anUkA, jAmI, mishrakeshI, alambuShA, marIchi, shUchikA,
vidyutpurNA, tilottama, adrikA, lakShaNa as well as rambha and manorama,
asitA, subAhu, supriya and also subhaga, urvashI , chitralekhA, sugrIvA,
sulochanA, puNDarikA, sugandhA as also surathA, pramAthinI, nandaA,
shAradvatI and other women as groups, such as menakA, sahajanyA, parNikA,
pu~njikasthala and other divine women in thousands danced there.
dhAtAryamA cha mishrashcha varuNo.aMsho bhagastathA |
indro vivasvAnpUShA cha tvaShTA cha savitA tathA ||3-70-21
kathito viShNurityevaM kAshyapeyo gaNastathA |
dhAtA, aryamA, mishra, varuNa, aMsha, bhaga, indra, vivasvAn,
pUSha, tvaShTA, savitA as well as viShNu are the group of the sons of
kashyapa.
ityete dvAdashAdityA jvalantaH sUryavarchasaH ||3-70-22
chakrustasya sureshasya namaskAraM mahAtmanaH |
These twelve Aditya-s, blazing and splendorous like sun,
arrived there and paid obeisance to the great soul, the lord of deva-s.
mR^igavyAdhashcha sarpashcha nirR^itishcha mahAbalaH ||3-70-23
ajaikapAdahirbudhnyaH pinAkI chAparAjitaH |
dahano.atheshvarashchaiva kapAlI cha vishAMpate ||3-70-24
sthANurbhagashcha bhagavAnrudrAstatrAvatasthire |
O the lord of earth! (O janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued) mR^igavyAdha,
sarpa, highly powerful nirR^iti, ajaikapAt, ahirbudhnya,
pinAkI and also aparAjita, dahana, Ishvara and also kapAlI and sthANu,
the lord rudra were present there.
ashvinau vasavashchAShTau marutashcha mahAbalAH ||3-70-25
vishvedevAshcha sAdhyAshcha tasya prA~njalayaH sthitAH |
The twin ashvin-s, the eight vasu-s, the powerful group of marut=s
and also vishvadeva-s and sAdhya-s were there with folded hands.
sheShAnujA mahAbhAgA vAsukipramukhAstathA ||3-70-26
kachChapashchApahartA cha takShakashcha mahAbalaH |
adhR^iShTAstejasA yuktA mahAkrodhA mahAbalAH ||3-70-27
ete nAgA mahAtmAnastasmai prA~njalayaH sthitAH |
The younger brothers of sheSha, starting with the highly fortunate and
prominent vAsuki, kachChapa, as well as apaharta, the highly powerful
takShaka - These undefeatable serpents, having splendor, highly angry
serpents, the great souls were present there with folded hands.
tArkShyashchAriShTanemishcha garuDashcha mahAbalaH ||3-70-28
aruNashchAruNishchaiva vainateyA hyupasthitAH |
tArkShya, ariShTanemi and the powerful garuDa, aruNa, AruNi, the son of
vinata were present there.
pitAmahashcha bhagavAnsvayamAgamya lokakR^it |
prAha chaivaM guruH shrImAnsaha sarvairmahAtmabhiH ||3-70-29
Then the lord, the great grandfather, the creator of the world arrived there.
The auspicious preceptor accompanied by all great souls said as follows:
brahmovAcha
yasmAtprasUyate lokaH prabhaviShNuH sanAtanaH |
tasmAllokeshvaraH shrImAnviShNureva bhavatvayam ||3-70-30
brahma said:
This world is created from the eternal lord, the splendorous viShNu.
Hence the lord, the auspicious viShNu, shall become the lord of the world.
evamuktvA tu bhagavAnsArdhaM devarShibhiH prabhuH |
namaskR^itvA sureshAya jagAma tridivaM punaH ||3-70-31
(vaishampAyana continued: O janamejaya!) Speaking thus, lord brahma along
with the deva sages, paid obeisance to the lord of deva-s and again returned
to heaven.
sa tu jAtaH sureshAnaH kashyapasyAtmajaH prabhuH |
navadurdinameghAbho raktAkSho vAmanAkR^itiH ||3-70-32
The lord, the lord of deva-s, who became the son of kashyapa, sparkled with
the dark colour of the cloud of the rainy season. His eyes were red.
He was short in stature. He had the form of vAmana, a dwarf.
shrIvatsenorasi shrImAnromajAtena rAjatA |
utphullalochanAH sarvAH pashyantyapsarasastadA ||3-70-33
He had a mark of shrIvatsa on his chest, shining with chest-hair. All the
divine women looked at him with their eyes wide open.
divi sUryasahasrasya bhavedyugapadutthitA |
yadi bhAH sadR^ishI sA syAdbhAsA tasya mahAtmanaH ||3-70-34
If thousands of suns rise in the sky at the same time, that brightness may
not be equal to the splendor of that great soul.
surarShipratimaH shrImAnbhUrbhuvo bhUtabhAvanaH |
shuchiromA mahAskandhaH sarvatejomayaH prabhuH ||3-70-35
The auspicious lord was like a deva-sage, concerned with the welfare of the
earth, the sky and all the beings. He had clean hair and great shoulders.
The lord was having all the splendor.
yA gatiH puNyakIrtInAmagatiH pApakarmaNAm |
yogasiddhA mahAtmAno yaM viduryogamuttamam ||3-70-36
He is the refuge of those having meritorious fame. Those who do sinful acts
can not reach the lord. He is known as the best yoga by the great souls,
the experts of yoga.
yasyAShTaguNamaishvaryaM yamAhurdevasattamam |
He is endowed with all the eight qualities of aishvarya. He is known as the
best among deva-s.
yaM prApya shAshvataM viprA niyatAmokShakA~NkShiNaH ||3-70-37
janmano maraNAchchaiva muchyante bhavabhIravaH |
Reaching the eternal lord, those who are excited inwardly (brAhmins)
and always desirous of liberation, are released from the fear of birth and
death and worldly existence.
yadetattapa ityAhuH sarvAshramanivAsinaH ||3-70-38
All those from all stages of life perform penance to achieve the lord.
sevante yaM yatAhArA dushcharaM vratamAsthitAH |
yo.ananta iti nAgeShu sevyate sarvabhogibhiH ||3-70-39
All those who perform difficult penances controlling food, reach the lord.
All serpents such as ananta serve the lord.
sahasramUrdhA raktAkShaH sheShAdibhiranuttamaiH |
yo yaj~na iti viprendrairijyate svargalipsubhiH ||3-70-40
The lord has numerous heads (one thousand). His eyes are red. The
incomparable serpents such as seSha and the kings (indra) of those who are
excited inwardly (brAhmins) and those desiring heaven, consider the lord as
a sacrifice and worship the lord.
nAnAsthAnagataH shrImAnekaH kaviranuttamaH |
yaM vedA gAnti vettAraM yaj~nabhAgapradAyinam ||3-70-41
The lord is established at various places. The auspicious lord is the one and
only one. The incomparable lord is wise. The veda-s praise the lord as the
provider of oblations.
vR^iShArchishchandrasUryAkShaM devamAkAshavigraham |
The lord sparkling with the rays of dharma has the moon and the sun as his
eyes. The sky is the body of the lord.
sa prAha tridashAnsarvAnvAchA vai parayA vibhuH ||3-70-42
jAnannapi mahAtejA gato yogena bAlatAm |
The lord, even though having great splendor, had become a boy with yoga.
The lord spoke to all the deva-s:
kiM karomi surashreShThAH kaM varaM cha dadAmi vaH ||3-70-43
yatkA~NkShitaM vai sarveShAM tadvai brUta mudA yutAH |
(vAmana said) O the best among deva-s! What shall I do? Which boon shall I
give you? Please tell me with pleasure what is desired by all of you.
tasya tadvachanaM shrutvA vAmanasya mahAtmanaH ||3-70-44
sarve te hR^iShTamanaso devAH kashyapanandanam |
UchuH prA~njalayo viShNuM surAH shakrapurogamAH ||3-70-45
(vaishampAyana continued: O janamejaya!) Hearing the words spoken by the
great soul vAmana, all the deva-s became happy. The deva-s, keeping shakra
(indra) in the front, told the son of kashyapa, viShNu with folded hands:
brahmaNo varadAnena hR^itaM no nikhilaM jagat |
tapasA mahatA chaiva vikrameNa damena cha ||3-70-46
balinA daityamukhyena sarvaj~nena mahAtmanA |
bali, the great soul, the one who knows all, the prominent among the sons of
diti, with his great penance, valiance and self-control as well as by the
boon given by brahma , took away the entire world belonging to us.
avadhyaH kila so.asmAkaM sarveShAM devasattama ||3-70-47
bhavAnprabhavate tasya nAnyaH kashchana suvrata |
O the best among deva-s! He can not be killed by all of us. O the one with
good penance! There is no one else other than you, who can conquer him.
yatprapadyAmahe sarve bhavantaM sharaNArthinaH |
sharaNyaM varadaM devaM sarvadevabhayApaham ||3-70-48
All of us seeking refuge, seek your refuge, who is the lord, the provider of
boons, the one who destroys the fear of all deva-s.
R^iShINAM cha hitArthAya lokAnAM cha sureshvara |
priyArthaM cha tathAdityAH kashyapasya tathaiva cha ||3-70-49
O the lord of deva-s! The liking of the sages and the people of the world and
the liking of aditi and kashyapa shall happen.
kavyaM pitR^INAMuchitaM surANAM havyamuttamam |
pravarteta mahAbaho yathApUrvaM surottama ||3-70-50
Suitable offering shall be ensured to the ancestors and the best oblation
to the deva-s, O the best among the deva-s! O the one with great arms!
All should happen as before.
AnR^iNyArthaM sureshasya vAsavasya mahAtmanaH |
pratyAnaya mahendrasya trailokyamidamavyayam ||3-70-51
For releasing the great soul, the lord of deva-s, vAsava (indra) from debt,
return all the imperishable three worlds to the great indra.
kratunA vAjimedhena yajate sa hi dAnavaH |
yatpratyAnayane yuktaM lokAnAM tadvichintaya ||3-70-52
The son of danu is performing a horse sacrifice now. Please think what is
suitable to regain the three worlds.
vaishampAyana uvAcha
evamuktastadA devairviShNurvAmanarUpadhR^ik |
praharShayannuvAchAtha sarvAndevAnidaM vachaH ||3-70-53
vaishampAyana said:
(O janamejaya!) viShNu, in the form of vAmana, who was told thus by the
deva-s, said, generating happiness for all the deva-s.
viShNuruvAcha
tasya yaj~nasakAshaM mAM maharShirvedapAragaH |
bR^ihaspatirmahAtejA nayatva~NgirasaH sutaH ||3-70-54
vAmana (viShNu) said:
Let the great sage , the one who is expert of vedas, the son of a~Ngiras,
the highly splendorous bR^ihaspati, take me to the place of the sacrifice.
tasyAhaM samanuprApto yaj~navATaM surottamAH |
vichariShye yathAyuktaM trailokyaharaNAya vai ||3-70-55
O the best among deva-s! Reaching at the entrance of the place of sacrifice,
I shall do the needful for taking away the three worlds.
vaishampAyana uvAcha
tato bR^ihaspatirdhImAnanayadvAmanaM prabhuM |
yaj~navATaM mahAtejA dAnavendrasya dhImataH ||3-70-56
vaishampAyana said:
(O janamejaya!) Then the highly splendorous bR^ihaspati with intellect,
led lord vAmana to the entrance of the sacrifice of the indra (king)
of danu's sons, bali, with intellect.
mau~njI yaj~nopavItI cha chChatrI daNDI dhvajI tathA |
vAmano dhUmraraktAkSho bhagavAnbAlarUpadhR^ik ||3-70-57
Lord vAmana was in the form of a boy, with his hair like the species of
rustling grass, mu~nja (Saccharum Sara), invested with the sacred thread,
holding an umbrella, staff and flag, with his eyes smoke-red in colour.
taM gatvA yaj~navATaM cha brahmarShigaNasa~Nkulam |
AtmanA chaiva bhagavAnvarNayAmAsa taM kratum ||3-70-58
Reaching the place of the sacrifice, full of brahma sages, lord vAmana
himself described that sacrifice.
lokeshvareshvaraH shrImAnsurairbrahmapurogamaiH |
adhyAsyamAno bhagavAnavR^iddho.apyatha vR^iddhavat ||3-70-59
The lord of the gods of the world, the auspicious lord, the lord worshipped
by deva-s and brahma, the lord who does not become old, appeared aged.
dAnavAdhipatestasya balervairochanasya cha |
yaj~navATamachintyAtmA jagAma surasattamaH ||3-70-60
vAmana, the best among deva-s, the soul who can not be thought of,
went to the place of sacrifice of the king of the sons of danu, bali,
the son of virochana.
pAlito.api hi daiteyaH sA~NgrAmikaparichChadaiH |
dvAre dAnavasaMbAdhe sahasaiva vivesha ha ||3-70-61
Even though the entrance of the place of sacrifice was protected by the sons
of diti, armed for battle, the lord vAmana directly went to the entrance.
R^iShibhishchaiva mantrAdyaiH sarvataH parivAritam |
daityadAnavarAjendramupatasthe baliM balI ||3-70-62
The powerful lord vAmana, saw the powerful bali, the indra (king)
of the kings of the sons of diti and danu, surrounded by the sages as well
as the priests, reciting mantras.
varNayitvA yathAnyAyaM yaj~naM yaj~naH sanAtanaH |
vistareNa narashreShTha prayogairvividhaistathA ||3-70-63
O the best among men! (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued) The eternal lord,
the lord of sacrifices, described the sacrifice in detail, systematically.
He also explained the various rituals of the sacrifice.
shukrAdInR^itvijashchApi yaj~nakarmavichakShaNAn |
sarvAneva nijagrAha chakAra cha niruttarAn ||3-70-64
Lord vAmana defeated all the priests of the sacrifice such as shukra who
are experts in the rituals of the sacrifice. He also made them devoid of
answers.
ArAdatha balestasya R^itvijAmabhitastathA |
yaj~namAtmAnamevAsau hetubhiH kAraNaM vibhuH ||3-70-65
By the side of bali, lord vAmana, surrounded by the sacrificial priests
explained that the sacrifice is the soul, along with reasons.
vaidikairaprakAshaishcha punarapyatha bhArata |
pratyakShamR^iShisa~NghAnAM varNayAmAsa chitraguH ||3-70-66
O the one of bharata race! (janamejaya! vaishampayana continued)
As the groups of sages were listening, the lord having beautiful speech,
again explained the sacrifice with secret principles of vedas.
tato niruttarAndR^iShTvA sopAdhyAyAnR^iShIMshcha tAn |
avR^iddhenApi vR^iddhAMstAnvAmanena mahaujasA ||3-70-67
Seeing that the highly splendorous vAmana, the boy, has made the aged and
experienced sages and teachers, devoid of answers,
adbhutaM chApi mene sa virochanasuto balI |
mUrdhnA kR^itA~njalishchedamabravIdvismito vachaH ||3-70-68
bali, son of virochana, considered it as a wonder. Astonished, he kept his
folded hands over his head and spoke these words:
kUTastvaM ko.asi kasyAsi kiM tehAsti prayojanam |
naivaMvidhaH parij~nAto dR^iShTapUrvo mayA dvijaH ||3-70-69
(bali said) Where are you coming from? Who are you? Who are your parents?
What do you want from here? I have neither known nor seen a twice-born like
you before.
bAlo matimatAM shreShTho j~nAnavij~nAnakovidaH |
shiShTavAgrUpasaMpanno manoj~naH priyadarshanaH ||3-70-70
You are a boy. You are the best among those having intellect. You are an
expert of spiritual and worldly knowledge. You speak best words. You are
handsome. You are beautiful and dear to see.
nedR^ishAH santi devAnAmR^iShINAmapi sUnavaH |
na nAgAnAM na yakShANAM nAsurANAM na rakShasAM ||3-70-71
There are no sons like you for deva-s, sages, serpents, yakSha-s,
asura-s or rAkShasa-s.
na pitR^INAM na siddhAnAM gandharvANAM tathaiva cha |
yo.asi so.asi namaste.astu brUhi kiM karavANi te ||3-70-72
There are no sons like you for ancestors, siddha-s and gandharva-s as well.
Whoever you are, let it be. I bow to you. What shall I do for you?
vaishampAyyana uvAcha
ukta evaM hyachintyAtmA balinA vAmanastadA |
provAchopAyatattvaj~naH smitapUrvamidaM vachaH ||3-70-73
vaishampAyana said:
(O janamejaya!) When bali spoke thus, vAmana, the one having the soul which
can not be thought of, expert of solutions, spoke the following words,
smiling:
iti shrImahAbhArate khileShu harivaMshe bhaviShyaparvaNi
vAmanaprAdurbhAve saptatitamo.adhyAyaH
