aho yaj~ne.asureshasya bahubhakShaH susaMskR^itaH |
pitAmahasyeva purA yajataH parameShThinaH ||3-71-1
viShNu (vAmana said) said:
Oh! The sacrifice of the lord of demons has many varieties of nicely
cooked food. The sacrifice is similar to that observed by the great grand
father, brahma, long ago.
sureshasya cha shakrasya yamasya varuNasya cha |
visheShitastvayA yaj~no dAnavendra mahAbala ||3-71-2
O the highly powerful king of the sons of danu (bali)! Your sacrifices have
excelled those conducted by the lord of deva-s, indra, yama, the god of death
and varuNa, the lord of water.
yajatA vAjimedhena kratUnAM pravareNa tu |
sarvapApavinAshAya tvayA svargapradarshinA ||3-71-3
You are the one who observed the horse sacrifice, the best of sacrifices,
to destroy all sins. By performing this sacrifice, you have shown the path to
heaven.
sarvakAmamayo hyeSha saMmato brahmavAdinAm |
kratUnAM pravaraH shrImAnashvamedha iti shrutiH ||3-71-4
shruti states that the auspicious horse sacrifice, the best of sacrifices,
approved by all followers of brahma, is capable of providing all desires.
    suvarNashR^i~Ngo hi mahAnubhAvo
        lohakShuro vAyujavo mahArathaH |
    svargekShaNaH kA~nchanagarbhagauraH
        sa vishvayoniH paramo hi medhyaH ||3-71-5
The peak (forehead) of the horse sacrifice is golden. Its splendor is great.
It is hard and sharp as metal. It is fast like wind, like a great chariot.
It views the heaven. Its splendor is bright like gold. The horse sacrifice,
the cause of the world, is highly holy.
    AsthAya vai vAjinamashvamedha-
        miShTvA narA duShkR^itamuttaranti |
    Ahushcha yaM vedavido dvijendrA
        vaishvAnaraM vAjinamashvamedham ||3-71-6
By observing the horse sacrifice, based on horse, people cross their bad
deeds. The twice born, the experts of vedas say that the horse of the horse
sacrifice is the god of fire (vaishvAnara).
    yathA.a.ashramANAM pravaro gR^ihAshramo
        yathA narANAM pravarA dvijAtayaH |
    yathAsurANAM pravaro bhavAniha
        tathA kratUnAM pravaro.ashvamedhaH ||3-71-7
As the state of house-holder is the best of the four stages of life,
the twice born are the best among men and you are the best among the asura-s,
in the same way, the horse sacrifice is the best among the sacrifices.
vaishampAyaba uvAcha
etachChrutvA tu vachanaM vAmanena samIritam |
mudA paramayA yuktaH prAha daityapatirbaliH ||3-71-8
vaishampAyana said:
(O janamejaya!) Hearing these words spoken by vAmana, the lord of the sons
of diti, bali became highly pleased and said:
baliruvAcha
kasyAsi brAhmaNashreShTha kimichChasi dadAmi te |
varaM varaya bhadraM te yatheShTaM kAmamApnuhi ||3-71-9
bali said:
O the best of brahmins! Whose son are you? What do you want? What shall I
give you? Accept a boon from me. Let there be good to you. Obtain what you
desire as you like.
vAmana uvAcha
na rAjyaM na cha yAnAni na ratnAni na cha striyaH |
kAmaye yadi tuShTo.asi dharme cha yadi te matiH ||3-71-10
vAmana said:
I do not want land, vehicles, jewels or women. If you are pleased and if
your intellect is based on dharma, I will tell you what I desire.
gurvarthaM me prayachChasva padAni trINi dAnava |
tvamagnisharaNArthAya eSha me pravaro varaH |
O the son of danu (bali)! For the sake of building a fire hall for my
preceptor, give me three feet (of earth). This is the best boon I desire.
vAmanasya vachaH shrutvA prAha daityapatirbaliH ||3-71-11
Hearing the words of vAmana, the lord of the sons of diti (bali) said:
baliruvAcha
tribhiH kiM tava viprendra padaiH pravadatAM vara |
shataM shatasahasrANAM padAnAM mArgatAM bhavAn ||3-71-12
bali said:
O the king (indra) of those who are excited inwardly!
O the best among speakers! Why (only) three feet? You shall get hundreds
and hundred thousands feet!
shukra uvAcha
mA dadasva mahAbAho na tvaM vetsi mahAsura |
eSha mAyApratichChanno bhagavAn pravaro hariH ||3-71-13
shukra said:
O the one with great arms! Do not give! You do not know, O the best among
asura-s! He is the lord, the best (among deva-s), hari, covered by illusion!
vAmanaM rUpamAsthAya shakrapriyahitepsayA |
tvAM va~nchayitumAyAto bahurUpadharo vibhuH ||3-71-14
Taking up the form of vAmana (dwarf), the lord, capable of taking many forms
has come to deceive you, desiring the benefit of shakra (indra).
evamuktaH sa shukreNa chiraM sa~nchintya vai baliH |
praharSheNa samAyuktaH kimataH pAtramiShyate ||3-71-15
(vaishampAyana continued: O janamejaya!) bali who was told thus by shukra
thought for a long time. He became very happy thinking. is there a beneficiary,
better than the lord?
pragR^ihya haste saMbhrAnto bhR^i~NgAraM kanakodbhavam |
Becoming highly excited, bali, took up the gold vessel in his hand.

viprendra prA~nmukhastiShTha sthito.asmi kamalekShaNa ||3-71-16
pratIchCha dehi kiM bhUmiM kiM mAtrA bhoH padatrayam |
dattaM cha pAtaya jalaM naiva mithyA bhavedguruH ||3-71-17
bali said:
O the king of those who are excited inwardly! Stand facing the east!
vAmana said) I have stood (facing the east)
(bali said) O the one with eyes as beautiful as the lotus flower! Take!
(vAmana said) give me!
(bali said) What?
(vAmana said) earth
(bali said): How much?
(vAmana said): Only three feet!
(bali said): I have given.
(vAmana said): Offer water so that my perceptor's desire is not wasted.
shukra uvAcha
bho na deyaM kuto daitya vij~nAto.ayaM mayA dhruvam |
ko.ayaM viShNuraho prItirva~nchitastvaM na va~nchitaH ||3-71-18
shukra said:
O lord! Do not give!
(bali said): Why not?
(shukra said) O the son of diti! I definitely know who he (vAmana) is!
(bali said) Who is he?
(shukra said) Oh! He is viShNu!
(bali said:) Then I am highly pleased
(shukra said) You are deceived!
(bali said): I am not deceived!
baliruvAcha
kathaM sa nAtho.ayaM viShNuryaj~ne svayamupasthitaH |
dAsyAmi devadevAya yadyadichChatyayaM vibhuH ||3-71-19
bali said:
If he is the lord viShNu himself, who has come to this sacrifice, then I
shall give the lord, the Lord of lords, all that he wishes.
ko vAnyaH pAtrabhUto.asmAdviShNoH parataro bhavet |
evamuktvA baliH shIghraM pAtayAmAsa vai jalam ||3-71-20
Who else can become a beneficiary, superior than lord viShNu? Saying this,
bali poured the water quickly.
vAmana uvAcha
padAni trINi daityendra paryAptAni mamAnagha |
yanmayA pUrvamuktaM hi tattathA na tadanyathA ||3-71-21
vAmana said:
O the king of the sons of bali! Three feet of earth is sufficient for me,
O the one without any sin! It will be the same as I said earlier. It can not
be otherwise.
vaishampAyana uvAcha
ityetadvachanaM shrutvA vAmanasya mahaujasaH |
kR^iShNAjinottarIyaM sa kR^itvA vairochanistadA ||3-71-22
vaishampAyana said:
(O janamejaya!) Hearing these words of vAmana of great splendor, the son of
virochana, bali, put the skin of black antelope on his shoulder.
evamastviti daityesho vAkyamuktvArisUdanaH |
tato vArisamApUrNaM bhR^i~NgAraM sa parAmR^ishat ||3-71-23
The lord of the sons of diti, the slayer of enemies, bali, said: Let it be.
Then he kept his hand on the vessel filled with water.
vAmano hyasurendrasya chikIrShuH kadanaM mahat |
kShipraM prasArayAmAsa daityakShayakaraM karam ||3-71-24
vAmana, desiring to bring great harm to the king of demons, quickly extended
his hand, capable of causing the decline of the sons of diti.
prA~nmukhashchApi daityeshastasmai sumanasA jalam |
dAtukAmaH kare yAvattAvattaM pratyaShedhayat ||3-71-25
tasya tadrUpamAlokya hyachintyaM cha mahAtmanaH |
abhUtapUrvaM cha harerjihIrShoH shriyamAsurIm ||3-71-26
i~Ngitaj~no.agrataH sthitvA prahrAdastvabravIdvachaH |
As the lord of the sons of diti, having a pleased mind, was about to pour
water on the extended hand of vAmana, who stood facing east, seeing that
form of the great soul which can not be thought of, thinking that this
form of hari who takes away the progress and welfare of demons has not
existed before, prahrAda, the foremost of those who recognize the actions of
viShNu, stood in front of bali and said:
prahrAda uvAcha
mA dadasva jalaM haste vaTorvAmanarUpiNaH ||3-71-27
sa tvasau yena te pUrvaM nihataH prapitAmahaH |
prahrAda said:
Do not pour water on the hands of the young Brahmin, in the form of vAmana.
He is the same one (narasimha - viShNu) who killed your great grandfather
(hiraNyakashipu) before.
viShNureSha mahApraj~nastvAM va~nchayitumAgataH ||3-71-28
He is viShNu of great intellect, who has come to deceive you.
baliruvAcha
hanta tasmai pradAsyAmi devAyemaM pratigraham |
anugrahakaraM devamIdR^ishaM jagataH prabhum ||3-71-29
bali said:
I am giving this gift to that lord. The Lord, the lord of world is providing
blessings in this manner.
brahmaNo.api garIyAMsaM pAtraM lapsyAmahe vayam |
avashyaM chAsurashreShTha dAtavyaM dIkShitena vai ||3-71-30
We have got the one superior to brahma as beneficiary. O the best among
asura-s! The one who is observing vow shall definitely give what is to be
given.
ityuktvAsurasa~NghAnAM madhye vairochanistada |
devAya pradadau tasmai padAni trINi viShNave ||3-71-31
(vaishampAyana continued: O janamejaya!) Saying this, among the groups of
the asura-s, the son of virochana, bali, gave three feet of earth to
viShNu (vAmana).
prahrAdauvAcha
dAnaveshvara mA dAstvaM viprAyAsmai pratigraham |
prahrAda said:
O the lord of the sons of danu! Do not offer the gift to the one who is
inwardly excited (vAmana - brahmin).
nemaM viprashishuM manye nedR^isho bhavati dvijaH ||3-71-32
rUpeNAnena daityendra satyameva bravImi te |
He is not the child of the one who is inwardly excited (Brahmin).
A twice born can not be in this form. O the king of the sons of diti! I am
telling you the truth.
nArasiMhamahaM manye tameva punarAgatam ||3-71-33
I recognize him as the man-lion, who has come again.
evamuktastadA tena prahrAdenAmitaujasA |
prahrAdamabravIdvAkyamidaM nirbhartsayanniva ||3-71-34
(vaishampAyana said: O janamejaya!) bali, who was told thus by prahrAda of
unlimited splendor, spoke these words to prahrAda, as though he was speaking
against him.
baliruvAcha
dehIti yAchate yo hi pratyAkhyAti cha yo.asura |
ubhayorapyalakShmyA vai bhAgastaM vishate naram ||3-71-35
bali said:
The one who requests saying give and the one who rejects the request,
O asura! Among these two, the one who rejects obtains the portion of
poverty of both.
pratij~nAya tu yo vipre na dadAti pratigraham |
sa yAti narakaM pApI mitragotrasamanvitaH ||3-71-36
The one who does not give the gift to the one who is excited inwards
(Brahmin), after agreeing to do so, that sinner shall go to hell along with
his friends, family and race.
alakShmIbhayabhIto.ahaM dadAmyasmai vasuMdharAm |
Afraid of the fear of poverty, I shall provide him with earth (as per his
request).
pratigrahItA chApyanyaH kashchidasmAddvijo.atha vai ||3-71-37
nAdhiko vidyate yasmAttaddadAmi vasuMdharAm |
No twice born is seen, more deserving than him to give the gift. Hence I am
giving him the gift of earth.
hR^idayasya cha me tuShTiH parA bhavati dAnava ||3-71-38
dR^iShTvA vAmanarUpeNa yAchantaM dvijapu~Ngavam |
O the son of danu! I have great pleasure in my heart, seeing the best among
the twice born, requesting (for earth) in the form of vAmana.
eSha tasmAtpradAsyAmi na sthAsyAmi nivAritaH ||3-71-39
Hence I am giving him (what he asked). I will not stop if you prevent me.
bhUyashcha prAbravIdevaM vAmanaM viprarUpiNam |
svalpaiH svalpamate kiM te padaistribhiranuttamam ||3-71-40
(vaishampAyana continued: O janamejaya!). Again bali said to Lord vAmana,
in the form of the one who is excited inward:
O! the one with little intellect! What is the three feet, comparable to
none, for you?
kR^itsnAM dadAmi te vipra pR^ithivIM sAgarairvR^itAm |
O the one who is excited inwards! I shall give you this entire earth
surrounded by ocean.
vAmana uvAcha
na pR^ithvIM kAmaye kR^itsnAM saMtuShTo.asmi padaistribhiH |
eSha eva ruchiShyo me varo dAnavasattama ||3-71-41
vAmana said:
I do not want the entire earth. I am happy with three feet (of earth).
O the best among the sons of danu! This is the boon to my liking.
vaishampAyana uvAcha
tathAstviti baliH prochya sparshayAmAsa dAnavaH |
padAni trINi devAya viShNave.amitatejase ||3-71-42
vaishampAyana said:
Saying let it be, bali, the son of danu, gave three feet of earth to lord
viShNu having unlimited splendor.
toye tu patite haste vAmano.abhUdavAmanaH |
sarvadevamayaM rUpaM darshayAmAsa vai vibhuH ||3-71-43
As the water fell on his hand, vAmana (the dwarf) became avAmana (universal
form). The lord showed his universal form, full of all deva-s.
bhUH pAdau dyauH shirashchAsya chandrAdityau cha chakShuShI |
pAdA~NgulyaH pishAchAshcha hastA~Ngulyashcha guhyakAH ||3-71-44
The earth was his feet. The sky was his head. The sun and moon were his eyes.
The toes of his feet were flesh eating demons (pishAcha). The fingers of
his hands were guhyaka-s.
vishvedevAshcha jAnusthA ja~Nghe sAdhyAH surottamAH |
yakShA nakheShu saMbhUtA lekhAshchApsarasastathA ||3-71-45
The vishvadeva were his knees. The sadhya-s, the best among deva-s,
were his shanks. The yakSha-s were being born from his nails and the divine
women from the lines (on his hands).
taDidvR^iShTiH suvipulA keshAH sUryAMshavastathA |
tArakA romakUpANi romANi cha maharShayaH ||3-71-46
His great looks were lightning. His hair was sun rays. The hair pores on his
skin were stars and the sages were his hairs.
bAhavo vidishashchAsya dishaH shrotre tathaiva cha |
ashvinau shravanau chAsya nAsA vAyurmahAbalaH ||3-71-47
His arms were the sub directions and ears the directions. The ear lobes were
ashvin-s and his nose, the powerful wind.
prasAdashchandramAshchaiva mano dharmastathaiva cha |
satyamasyAbhavadvANI jihvA devI sarasvatI ||3-71-48
His pleasure is the moon as well as his mind dharma. His words are truth.
His tongue is Goddess sarasvati.
grIvA ditirmahAdevI tAluH sUryashcha dIptimAn |
dvAraM svargasya nAbhirvai mitrastvaShTA cha vai bhruvau ||3-71-49
His neck is the great goddess diti. His palate is the blazing sun.
His navel is the entrance to heaven. His eyebrows are mitra and tvaShTA.
mukhaM vaishvAnarashchAsya vR^iShaNau tu prajApatiH |
hR^idayaM bhagavAnbrahmA puMstvaM vai vishvato muniH ||3-71-50
His face is vaishvAnara, the fire god. His testicles are prajApati, the
lord of beings. His heart is lord brahmA. His manliness is sage vishvata.
pR^iShThe.asya vasavo devA marutaH pAdasandhiShu |
sarvachChandAMsi dashanA jyotIMShi vimalAH prabhAH ||3-71-51
His back side is vasu-s. His knee joints are marut-s. His teeth are the
meters. His brightness is his splendor.
UrU rudro mahAdevo dhairyaM chAsya mahArNavaH |
Udare chAsya gandharvA bhujagAshcha mahAbalAH ||3-71-52
His thighs are the great rudra-s. His courage is the great oceans.
His belly is gandharva-s and the highly powerful serpents.
lakShmIrmedhA dhR^itiH kAntiH sarvavidyA cha vai kaTiH |
lalATamasya paramasthAnaM cha paramAtmanaH ||3-71-53
His intellect is goddess lakShmI. His brightness is goddess dhR^iti. His
waist is all knowledge. His forehead is the ultimate place of the supreme
soul.
sarvajyotIMShi yAnIha tapaH shakrastu devarAT |
tasya devAdhidevasya tejo hyAhurmahAtmanaH ||3-71-54
All the lights are his penance. The king of deva-s, shakra, is the splendor
of the great soul, the lord of deva-s.
stanau kakShau cha vedAshcha oShThau chAsya makhAH sthitAH |
iShTayaH pashubandhAshcha dvijAnAM cheShTitAni cha ||3-71-55
His breasts and armpits are Veda-s. Both his lips are sacrifices.
His desires are the animal sacrifices and the rituals observed by the twice
born.
tasya devamayaM rUpaM dR^iShTvA viShNormahAsurAH |
abhyasarpanta sa~NkruddhAH pata~NgA iva pAvakam ||3-71-56
Seeing that universal form of viShNu, full of deva-s, the great asura-s
became angry and surrounded him like insects surrounding the fire.
iti shrImahAbhArate khileShu harivaMshe bhaviShyaparvaNi
vAmanaprAdurbhAve vishvarUpaprakAshe
ekasaptatitamo.adhyAyaH
This is the seventyfirst lesson of bhaviShyaparva, harivaMsha,
khila of mahAbhArata, in the manifestation of vAmana, vAmana transforms to
