Lesson 72 - following viShNu's instruction, bali enters pAtAla, hymn to
viShNu by bali (mokSaviMshaka) etc.
(O janamejaya!) Now hear the names of the great souls, the sons of danu,
their forms, their lineage and their prominent weapons.
viprachitti, shibi, sha~Nku, ayaHsha~Nku, ayaHshira, ashvashirA and the
valiant hayagrIva,
vegavAn, ketumAn, ugra, and the great demon agravyagra, puShkara,
puShkala, sAshva, ashvapati,
prahrAda, ashvashira, kumbha, saMhrAda, gaganapriya, anuhrAda, harihara,
vArAha, samhAra, ruja,
vR^iShaparvA, virUpAkSha, atichandra, sulochana, niShprabha, suprabha,
shrImAn, as also nirUdara,
ekavaktra, mahAvaktra, dvivaktra, kAlasaMnibha, sharabha, shalabha, and
also kuNapa, kulapa, kratha,
bR^ihatkIrti, mahAgarbha, sha~NkukarNa, mahAdhvani, dIrghajihva, arkavadana,
mR^idubAhu, mR^idupriya,
vAyu, gaviShTha, namuchi, shambara, and the great vikShara, chandrahantA,
krodhahantA and krodhavardhana,
kAlaka, kAlakAkSha, vR^itra, krodha, vimokShaNa, gaviShTha, haviShTha,
pralamba, naraka and pR^ithu,
chandratApana, vAtApi, ketumAn, baladarpita, asilomA, pulomA,
bAShkala, pramada and mada,
shR^igAlavadana, as also karAla, keshi, ekAkSha, ekakabAhu, tuhuNDa,
sR^imala and sR^ipa -
as the conqueror of the three worlds, viShNu, the great soul, took the
steps, these and many other sons of diti, came near to him.
Some of them had barbed missiles (prAsa) in their hands. Some had opened
their mouths. Some had donkey's sounds. Some held clubs with iron spikes
(shataghni) and wheels (chakra) and others held the weapon,
thunderbolt (vajra) in their hands.
Some held swords and spears with three points (paTTisha) and others had
axes (parashvadha) in their hands. Some had barbed missiles (prAsa)
and hammers (mudgara) and others were holding iron clubs (parigha)
in their hands.
Some held huge rocks (mahAshani) in their hands. Some highly powerful demons
had clubs (musala). Some had huge trees in their hands. Also some were
holding bows.
Some had maces (gada) and fire-arms (bhushuNDi) and others were holding
thunderbolts (vajra) in their hands. Some were holding huge spears
(mahapaTTisha) and iron clubs (parigha) in their hands.
The terrible sons of danu, having false pride of victory in battle,
had swords (asi), weapons and variety of weapons. The powerful demons
were having variety of forms.
Some demons had the face of tortoises and cocks. Some had the face of
elephants. Some had the face of donkeys and camels as well as the face of
boars.
Some had the face of huge sharks and dolphins (or the Gangetic porpoise).
Some had faces of cats and
parrots. Some of the sons of danu had long faces.
Some had the faces of garuDa and rhinoceros. Some had faces of peacocks.
Some had mouths of horses. Some had reddish brown mouths. Some had terrible
faces of
animals.
Some had faces of camels and porcupines. Some of the sons of danu had long
faces. Some had faces of mongoose and others had the faces of pArAvata
(pigeon, snake or monkey).
Some had the faces of the bird Anas Casarca (chakravAka) and others had the
face of godha (snake). Some valiant demons had the face of animals, gojAdi and
bullocks.
Some had the faces of chameleon. Others had the faces of tigers. Some others
had the faces of bears, leopards and lions.
Some were wearing elephant skins and the skins of black antelopes. Some
covered their bodies with tree barks as well as barks of plants.
The asura-s were wearing turbans, diadems, ear rings and crowns. They had
long hair. They wore bracelets on the neck and they were radiant.
The sons of diti were wearing varieties of clothes. They were decorated with
variety of garlands. Their bodies were smeared with varieties of pastes.
As the lord of senses (viShNu, vAmana) was taking the steps, the best among
the asura-s, the sons of danu, taking their various weapons which were
blazing, went near and attacked him.
The lord oppressed all the sons of diti, beating them with his hands and feet.
Taking up the form of a huge body, the lord took away the earth, the
splendorous lord, measuring the three worlds, having splendor equal to
the sun.
tasya vikramato bhUmiM chandrAditau stanAntare |
nabhaH prakramamANasya sakthideshe vyavasthitau |
paraM vikramamANasya jAnudeshe vyavasthitau ||3-72-29
As the lord was measuring the earth, the moon and the sun were between his
breasts. As the lord was measuring the sky, the moon and the sun were near
his thighs. As he was measuring the top, the moon and the sun were near his
knee.
viShNoramitavIryasya vadantyevaM dvijAtayaH |
The twice born say that the valiance of viShNu is unlimited.
jitvA lokatrayaM kR^itsnaM hatvA chAsurapu~NgavAn ||3-72-30
dadau shakrAya vasudhAM harirlokanamaskR^itaH |
Conquering the entire three worlds, and killing the chief asura-s, hari,
to whom the world pays obeisance, gave the earth to shakra (indra).
sutalaM nAma pAtAlamadhastAdvasudhAtale ||3-72-31
balerdattaM bhagavatA viShNunA prabhaviShNunA |
The netherworld, named sutalaM, located below the earth, was given to bali by
the lord viShNu, the splendorous viShNu.
tadavApyAsurashreShThashchakAra matimuttamAm ||3-72-32
rasAtalatale vAsamakarodasurAdhipaH |
With the best intelligence, bali accepted the netherworld.
The king of asura-s, bali, lived at the netherworld, rasAtala.
tatrasthashcha mahAtejA dhyAnaM paramamAsthitaH ||3-72-33
uvAcha vachanaM dhImAnviShNuM lokanamaskR^itam |
The one with high splendor, bali, stayed at rasAtala and took up meditation.
He, the one with intellect, spoke the following words to viShNu, to whom the
world pays obeisance.
kiM mayA deva kartavyaM brUhi sarvamasheShataH |
O lord! What is my duty? You may tell me all, without leaving anything.
tato daityAdhipaM prAha devo viShNuH surottamaH ||3-72-34
Then the lord viShNu, the best among deva-s, told bali, the king of the sons
of diti.

dadAmi te mahAbhAga parituShTo.asmi te.asura |
varaM varaya bhadraM te yatheShTaM kAmamApnuhi ||3-72-35
viShNu said:
O the one of great fortune! I am pleased with you. O asura! Accept a boon
from me. Let there be good to you. Obtain all that you desire.
mA cha shakrasya vachanaM pratihAsIH kathaMchana |
ahamAj~nApayAmi tvAm shreyashchaivamavApsyasi ||3-72-36
I am ordering you, never to reject the words of shakra. You will have good
fortune in this way.
atha daityAdhipaM prAha viShNurdevAdhipAnujaH |
vAchA paramayA devo vareNyaH prabhurIshvaraH ||3-72-37
(vaishampAyana continued: O janamejaya!) Then viShNu, the younger brother of
the king of deva-s (indra), the most superior lord, the best among respected,
the lord, the lord of lords, told the king of the sons of diti using
prominent words:
yattvayA salilaM dattaM gR^ihItaM pANinA mayA |
tasmAtte daitya devebhyo nAsti jAtu bhayaM kvachit ||3-72-38
The water given by you was accepted with my hands. Hence, O the son of diti,
you will have no fear from the deva-s ever.
sutalaM nAma pAtAlaM tatra tvaM sAnugo vasa |
sarvadaityagaNaiH sArdhaM matprasAdAnmahAsura ||3-72-39
O great asura! With my pleasure, you may live in the netherworld named
sutalaM along with your followers and all the groups of the sons of diti.
na cha te devadevasya shakrasyAmitatejasaH |
shAsanaM pratihantavyaM smaratA shAsanaM mama ||3-72-40
Remembering my order, you shall never disobey the order of the lord of deva-s,
shakra, having unlimited splendour.
devatAshchApi te sarvAH pUjyA eva mahAsura |
O great asura! Worship all deva-s as well.
bhogAMshcha vividhansamyagyaj~nAMshcha sahadakShiNAn ||3-72-41
prApsyase cha mahAbhAga divyAnkAmAnyathepsitAn |
O the one of good fortune! You shall enjoy many luxuries, sacrifices along
with tributes as well as divine desires.
iha chAmutra chAkShayyAnvividhAMshcha parichChadAn |
daityAdhipatyaM cha sadA matprasAdAdavApsyasi ||3-72-42
Due to my pleasure, you shall obtain the lordship over all the sons of diti,
always. You shall also enjoy many items in this world as well as in the other
world.
yadA cha tAM mayA proktAM maryAdAM chAlayiShyasi |
vadhiShyanti tadA hi tvAM nAgapAshairmahAbalAH ||3-72-43
If you break this code of conduct as stated by me, the highly powerful
serpents shall tie you up with the serpent-knot.
namaskAryAshcha te nityaM mahendrAdyA divaukasaH |
mama jyeShThaH surashreShTha shAsanaM pratigR^ihyatAm ||3-72-44
You shall always pay obeisance to the deva-s such as the great indra.
Indra, the best among deva-s is my elder brother. You shall accept his order.

surAsuraguro shreShTha sarvalokamaheshvara |
tatrAsato me pAtAle bhAgaM brUhi surottama ||3-72-45
bali said:
O the lord of lords! O the one of great fortune! O the one who holds the
conch, the wheel and the mace! O the best preceptor of deva-s as well as
asura-s! O the great lord of all the worlds! O the best among deva-s!
Please assign a portion for me who lives in the netherworld.
mamAnnamashanaM deva prAshanArthamariMdama |
tadvadasva surashreShTha tR^iptiryena mamAkShayA ||3-72-46
O lord! Please assign my food , O the oppressor of foes, for the sake of my
consumption. O the best among deva-s! Please assign my portion so that I,
residing in the netherworld, am always satisfied.

    ashrotriyaM shrAddhamadhItamavrata-
        madakShiNaM yaj~namanartvijA hutaM |
    ashraddhayA dattamasaMskR^itaM havi-
        rete pradattAstava daitya bhAgAH ||3-72-47
The auspicious lord said:
(shrAddha) ceremony performed to honour and please the dead ancestors,
performed by brahmins who are not conversant with the sacred knowledge of
Vedas, studies made without observing celibacy, sacrifices without tributes,
oblations without priests, offerings devoid of care, uncooked oblations -
all these, O the son of diti, shall be your portion.
puNyaM madveShiNAM yachcha madbhaktadveShiNAM tathA |
krayavikrayasaktAnAM puNyaM yachchAgnihotriNAm ||3-72-48
The merit of those who hate me as well as those who hate my devotees,
the merit of brahmins who offer oblations to fire and who indulge in buying
and selling,
ashraddhayA cha yaddAnaM dadatAM yajatAM tathA |
tatsarvaM tava daityendra matprasAdAdbhaviShyati ||3-72-49
the merit of those who donate and perform sacrifices without care - all
these, O the king of the sons of diti, shall become your portion due to my
pleasure.
vaishampAyana uvAcha
etachChrutvA tu vachanaM balirviShNormahAtmanaH |
evamastviti taM proktvA pAtAlamasurottamaH |
pravivesha mahAnAdo devAj~nAM pratipAlayan ||3-72-50
vaishampAyana said:
(O janamejaya!) Hearing these words of the great soul viShNu, bali said:
Let it be. Saying this, the best among asura-s (bali), entered the
netherworld, with a loud sound, obeying the order of the lord.
etasminnantare chApi viShNustridashapUjitaH |
bhagavAnapi rAjyAnAM pravibhAgAMshchakAra ha ||3-72-51
Meanwhile, lord viShNu, worshipped by the deva-s, assigned the various
regions of the world.
dadau pUrvAM dishaM chaindrIM shakrAyAmitatejase |
yAmyAM yamAya devAya pitR^irAj~ne mahAtmane ||3-72-52
The lord assigned the eastern direction, aindri, to shakra (indra) having
unlimited splendor. The lord assigned the southern direction to the great
soul, yama, the king of ancestors.
pashchimAM tu dishaM prAdAdvaruNAya mahAtmane |
uttarAM cha kuberAya yakShAdhipataye disham ||3-72-53
The western direction was given to the great soul varuNa. The northern
direction was given to kubera, the king of yakSha-s.
adhaHsthAM nAgarAjAya somAyordhvAM dishaM dadau |
The downward direction was assigned to the lord of serpents, ananta.
The upward direction was assigned to soma, the moon.
evaM vibhajya trailokyaM viShNurbalavatAM varaH ||3-72-54
jagAma tridivaM devaH pUjyamAno maharShibhiH |
Assigning the three worlds thus, viShNu, the best among the powerful,
returned to heaven, worshipped by the great sages as well.
vAmanaH sarvabhUteshaH pratiShThApya cha vAsavam ||3-72-55
vAmana, the lord of all beings installed vAsava (indra) in heaven.
tasminprayAte durdharShe vAmane.amitatejasi |
sarve mumudire devAH puraskR^itya shatakratum ||3-72-56
vAmana, the one with unlimited splendor, difficult to conquer, left heaven.
All deva-s, beginning with the one who performed one hundred sacrifices,
shakra, enjoyed the most.
vaishampAyana uvAcha
gate tu tridivaM kR^iShNe baddhvA vairochaniM balim |
nAgaiH saptashirobhishcha kambalAshvatarAdibhiH ||3-72-57
vaishampAyana said:
(O janamejaya!) As kR^iShNa (viShNu) left heaven, the serpents with seven
heads, such as kambala and ashvatara, tied up bali, the son of virochana.
nAgabandhanaduHkhArtaM baliM vairochaniM tataH |
yadR^ichChayAsau devarShirnAradaH pratyapadyata ||3-72-58
Accidently, the deva sage, nArada, arrived near bali, the son of virochana,
distressed by the sorrow of serpent-knot.
sa taM kR^ichChragataM dR^iShTvA kR^ipayAbhipariplutaH |
uvAcha dAnavashreShThaM mokShopAyaM dadAmi te ||3-72-59
Seeing him (bali) in distress, the sage was overcome with kindness. The sage
told the best among the sons of danu: I will give you the means for release.
stavaM devAdhidevasya vAsudevasya dhImataH |
anAdinidhanasyAsya akShayasyAvyayasya cha ||3-72-60
I will give you the hymn of the lord of lords, the one who illuminates all
(the one who dwells in all beings), the one with intellect,
the one having neither the beginning nor the end, the un-decaying one,
the imperishable one.
tamadhIShvAtha daityendra vishuddhenAntarAtmanA |
tadgatastanmanA bhUtvA drutaM mokShamavApsyasi ||3-72-61
O the indra of the sons of diti! Recite that hymn with a pure internal
soul, with your mind reaching the lord. Then you will be quickly released
from the knots.
tato virochanasutaH prayataH prA~njaliH shuchiH |
mokShaviMshakamavyagro nAradAtsamadhItavAn ||3-72-62
Then, bali, the son of virochana, piously disposed, with folded hands,
with a pure and steady mind, learned mokShaviMshaka (the hymn of release
having twenty parts) from the deva sage, nArada.
tamadhItya stavaM divyaM nAradena samIritam |
pR^ithivI choddhR^itA yena taM jajApa mahAsuraH ||3-72-63
Then the great demon, bali, recited that divine hymn, spoken by nArada,
capable of lifting the earth (from distress).
oM namo.astvanantapataye akShayAya mahAtmane |
jaleshayAya devAya padmanabhAya viShNave ||3-72-64
(bali said) oM! I bow to the lord ananta, the lord of serpents,
the un-decaying lord, the great soul, the lord of water, the lord viShNu,
having lotus on his navel.
saptasUryavapuH kR^itvA trI.NllokAnkAntavAnasi |
bhagavankAlakAlastvaM tena satyena mokShaya ||3-72-65
I bow to the lord, who measured the three worlds, taking up the body,
having the splendor of seven suns. Oh the lord of the lord of Time! By
this truth, grant me liberation.
naShTachandrArkagagane kShINayaj~natapaHkriye |
punashchintayase lokAMstena satyena mokShaya ||3-72-66
As the sky becomes devoid of the moon and the sun and as the sacrifices
and penances decline, you again recalls the worlds.
By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation.
brahmarudrendravAyvagnisaridbhujagaparvatAH |
tvatsthA dR^iShTvA dvijendreNa tena satyena mokShaya ||3-72-67
The kings of twice born, see brahma, rudra, indra, the lord of wind (vAyu),
the lord of fire, rivers, serpents and mountains in the lord.
By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation.
mArkaNDena purA kalpe pravishya jaTharaM tava |
charAcharagataM dR^iShTaM tena satyena mokShaya ||3-72-68
In the earlier era, mArkanDeya had entered your belly and saw all the
moving and fixed beings of the world inside you.
By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation.
eko vidyAsahAyastvaM yogI yogamupAgataH |
punastrailokyamutsR^ijya tena satyena mokShaya ||3-72-69
You are the only one lord, assisted by knowledge. You are yogi,
yoked with yoga. You created all the three worlds again.
By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation.
jalashayyAmupAsIno yoganidrAmupAgataH |
lokAMshchintayase bhUyastena satyena mokShaya ||3-72-70
You lie in the bed of water. Entering the sleep of yoga, you again think
about the world. By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation.
vArAhaM rUpamAsthAya vedayaj~napuraskR^itam |
dharA jaloddhR^itA yena tena satyena mokShaya ||3-72-71
Taking up the form of the great boar, keeping the deva-sacrifices in front,
you uplifted the earth. By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation.
uddhR^itya daMShTrayA yaj~nAMstrInpiNDAnkR^itavAnasi |
tvaM pitR^INAmapi hare tena satyena mokShaya ||3-72-72
Uplifting the sacrifices with your fang, you assigned three portions of the
offerings to the ancestors as well.
By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation.
pradudruvuH surAH sarve hiraNyAkShabhayArditAH |
paritrAtAstvayA deva tena satyena mokShaya ||3-72-73
All the deva-s ran away, oppressed by the fear of hiraNyakSha. O lord!
They were protected by you. By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation.
dIrghavaktreNa rUpeNa hiraNyAkShasya saMyuge |
shiro jahAra chakreNa tena satyena mokShaya ||3-72-74
In the battle, you fought with hiraNyakSha, in the form of the great boar,
having a long mouth and cut off his head with your chakra (wheel).
By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation.
bhagnamUrdhAsthimastiShko hiraNyakashipuH purA |
huMkAreNa hato daityastena satyena mokShaya ||3-72-75
Earlier you killed hiraNyakashipu with the sound huM (huMkAra).
The son of diti (hiraNyakashipu) was killed, having his head, bones and brain
fully smashed. By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation.
dAnavAbhyAM hR^itA vedA brahmaNaH pashyataH purA |
paritrAtAstvayA deva tena satyena mokShaya ||3-72-76
Long ago, the Vedas were taken away by the sons of danu, as brahma was
watching. You protected the Vedas.
By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation.
kR^itvA hayashirorUpaM hatvA tu madhukaiTabhau |
brahmaNe te.arpitA vedAstena satyena mokShaya ||3-72-77
Taking up the form of hayashira, you killed madhu and kaiTabha and gave the
Vedas to brahma. By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation.
devadAnavagandharvA yakShasiddhamahoragAH |
antaM tava na pashyanti tena satyena mokShaya ||3-72-78
Your end is not seen by deva-s, the sons of danu, gandharva-s, yakSha-s,
the great serpents. By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation.
apAntaratamA nAma jAto devasya vai sutaH |
kR^itAshcha tena vedArthAstena satyena mokShaya ||3-72-79
O lord! The one with the name apAntaratama, born as your son, O Lord,
provided the
meanings of all Vedas.
By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation.
vedayaj~nAgnihotrANi pitR^iyaj~nahavIMShi cha |
rahasyaM tava devasya tena satyena mokShaya ||3-72-80
Vedas, sacrifices, fire-sacrifices and sacrifices for ancestors and the
oblations are your secrets.
By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation.
R^iShirdIrghatamA nAma jAtyandho gurushApataH |
tvatprasAdAchcha chakShuShmAMstena satyena mokShaya ||3-72-81
The sage named dIrghatama (long darkness) was blind from birth,
due to the curse of the preceptor. He regained his eye-sight due to your
pleasure. By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation.
grAhagrastaM gajendraM cha dInaM mR^ityuvashaM gatam |
bhaktaM mokShitavAMstvaM hi tena satyena mokShaya ||3-72-82
You, the lord, released your devotee, the king of elephants from the
mouth of the crocodile, from the side of death.
By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation.
akShayashchAvyayashcha tvaM brahmaNyo bhaktavatsalaH |
uchChritAnAM niyantAsi tena satyena mokShaya ||3-72-83
You are the un-decaying lord. You are imperishable. you are brahma.
You are affectionate to your devotees. You control those rising with pride.
By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation.
sha~NkhaM chakraM gadAM padmaM shAr~NgaM garuDameva cha |
prasAdayAmi shirasA te bandhAnmokShayantu mAm ||3-72-84
I shall please the conch, wheel, mace, lotus, the bow shAr~NgaM and garuDa,
bowing my head. They shall grant me liberation.
sha~NkhachakragadAtUNashAr~NgaM cha garuDAdayaH |
prasAdayAmAsurhariM baliM mokShaya bandhanAt ||3-72-85
(vaishampAyana continued: O janamejaya!) The conch, wheel, mace, lotus,
the bow shAr~NgaM and garuDa pleased lord hari and said: Please grant
liberation to bali from knots.
tataH prasanno bhagavAnAdidesha khageshvaram |
garuDaM nAgahantAraM baliM mokShaya bandhanAt ||3-72-86
Then the lord became pleased (with bali) and sent the lord of birds, garuDa,
the killer of serpents, asking him to grant liberation to bali from the
knots.
tato vikShipya garuDaH pakShAvatulavikramaH |
jagAma vasudhAmUlaM yatrAste saMyato baliH ||3-72-87
The garuDa of unequalled valiance, waving his wings, arrived at the root
of earth, the netherworld, where bali was tied up.
AgamaM tasya vij~nAya nAgA muktvA mahAsuram |
yayuH purIM bhogavatIM vainateyabhayArditAH ||3-72-88
Knowing about the arrival of garuDa, the serpents released the great asura,
bali. Then, oppressed by the fear of the son of vinata (garuDa)
the serpents went to the city of bhogavati.
muktaM kR^iShNaprasAdena chintayAnamadhomukham |
bhraShTashriyamuvAchedaM garutmAnpannagAshanaH ||3-72-89
bali, who was released due to the pleasure of kR^iShNa, was immersed in
thoughts and he kept his head down. The one who eats snakes,
garuDa spoke to bali, who had lost all his prosperity.
garuDa uvAcha
dAnavendra mahAbAho viShNustvAmabravItprabhuH |
mukto nivasa pAtAle saputrajanabAndhavaH ||3-72-90
garuDa said:
O the king (indra) of the sons of danu! O the one with powerful arms!
Lord viShNu has said: You shall live free in the netherworld along with your
sons and relatives.
itastvayA na gantavyaM gavyUtimapi dAnava |
samayaM yadi bhindhyAstvaM mUrdhA te shatadhA bhavet ||3-72-91
O the son of danu! You shall not leave this place even to a place,
twice the distance of calling from here. If you break this agreement,
then your head shall shatter in to a hundred pieces.
pakShIndravachanaM shrutvA dAnavendro.abravIdidam |
sthito.asmi samaye tasya anantasya mahAtmanaH ||3-72-92
Hearing the words of the king (indra) of birds (garuDa), the king (indra)
of the sons of danu said:

jIvyopAyaM tu bhagavAnmama ki~nchitkarotu saH |
ihastho.ahaM sukhAsIno yenApyAye khageshvara ||3-72-93
(bali said) Let the lord arrange some means for my living. O the lord of
birds! I shall live in this place comfortably, happily and satisfied.
balestu vachanaM shrutvA garutmAnidamabravIt |
pUrvameva kR^itastena jIvyopAyo mahAtmanA ||3-72-94
Hearing the words of bali, garuDa spoke as follows: The great soul, the lord,
has already assigned a means for living for you.
vartayiShyanti ye yaj~nA vidhihInA na R^itvijaH |
prAyashchittamajAnanto yaj~nabhAgastatastava ||3-72-95
Some perform sacrifices, not as ordained and not with the priests.
The portions of those sacrifices, performed without thinking,
are for you.
na teShAM yaj~nabhAgaM vai pratigR^ihNanti devatAH |
anenApyAyitabalaH sukhamAtraM nivatsyasi ||3-72-96
The portions of sacrifices offered by them will not be accepted by the deva-s.
You shall live here comfortably, getting your strength from those portions.
vaishampAyana uvAcha
saMdeshametaM bhagavAndattavAnkashyapAtmajaH |
dAnavendra mahAbAho viShNustrailokyabhAvanaH ||3-72-97
vaishampAyana said:
(O janamejaya!) (garuDa continued) O the king (indra) of the sons of danu!
O the one with great arms! This message was given by the lord,
the son of kashyapa, the one who is concerned with the welfare of the
three worlds.
imaM stavamanantasya sarvapApapramochanam |
yaH paTheta naro bhaktyA tasya nashyati kilbiSham ||3-72-98
If one recites, with devotion, this hymn of the lord having no end,
capable of releasing from all sins, all his sins, injuries and diseases will
vanish.
gohatyAyAH pramuchyeta brahmaghno brahmahatyayA |
aputro labhate putraM kanyA chaivepsitaM patim ||3-72-99
One will be released from the sin of killing cows. The killer of brahmin will
be released from the sin of killing brahmins. The childless shall obtain
children. The maiden will get a husband as per her wish.
sadyo garbhAtpramuchyeta garbhiNI janayetsutam |
The pregnant women will deliver children without any pain.
ye cha mokShaiShiNo loke yoginaH sA~NkhyakApilAH ||3-72-100
stavenAnena gachChanti shvetadvipamakalmaShAH |
Those of the world desirous of liberation, the yogis of sA~Nkhya and kapila
will reach the white island, devoid of all sins, by reciting this hymn.
sarvakAmaprado hyeSha stavo.anantasya kIrtyate ||3-72-101
Reciting this hymn of ananta will fulfill all desires.
yaH paThetprAtarutthAya shuchiH prayatamAnasaH |
sarvAnkAmAnavApnoti mAnavo nAtra saMshayaH ||3-72-102
If one recites this hymn early morning, purified with a pious mind, then he
will obtain all his desires. There is no doubt.
eSha vai vAmano nAma prAdurbhAvo mahAtmanaH |
vedavidbhirdvijaireva paThyate vaiShNavaM yashaH ||3-72-103
This is the manifestation of the great soul, named vAmana. In this way,
the twice-born, the experts of Vedas, study about the fame of viShNu.
yastvimaM vAmanaM divyaM prAdurbhAvaM mahAtmanaH |
shR^iNuyAnniyato bhaktyA sadA parvasu parvasu ||3-72-104
If this divine manifestation of the great soul vAmana is heard, always with
devotion, as ordained, during each half month,
parAnvijayate rAjA yathA viShNurmahAbalaH |
yasho vimalamApnoti vipulaM chApnute vasu ||3-72-105
the king will conquer the enemies as the powerful viShNu (conquered the
enemies of deva-s) and obtain pure fame and get immense wealth.
priyo bhavati bhUtAnAM sarveShAM vAmano yathA |
putrapautrAshcha vardhante ArogyaM guNasaMpadaH ||3-72-106
Like vAmana, he will become dear to all beings. His sons and grandsons shall
flourish. He will be endowed with good health and good qualities.
prIyate paThatashchAsya devadevo janArdanaH |
sarvakAmayutashchaiva kR^iShNadvaipAyano.abravIt ||3-72-107
The lord of lords, the one who excites men will be pleased with the one who
studies the manifestation of vAmana and all his desires will be satisfied.
Thus spoke kR^iShNadvaipAyana, vyAsa.
iti shrImahAbhArate khileShu harivaMshe bhaviShyaparvaNi
vAmanaprAdurbhAve dvisaptatitamo.adhyAyaH
This is the seventy-second lesson of bhaviShyaparva, harivaMsha,
khila of mahabhArata, in the manifestation of vAmana,
following viShNu's instruction, bali enters pAtAla, hymn to
viShNu by bali (mokSaviMshaka) etc.
