vaishampAyana said :
(O janamejaya!) After the night was over, in the morning,
the one who excites men (kR^iShNa), wishing to go to kailAsa, performed
agnihotra and other auspicious deeds and offered cows as tribute
to the brahmins and bowed to the best of brahmins.
AsthAnamaNDapaM kR^iShNaH pravivesha jagatpatiH ||3-74-2
The Lord of the world, kR^aShNa, then entered the assembly hall.
AsanaM mahadAsthAya vR^iShNInAhUya sarvashaH |
balabhadraM shineH putraM hArdikyaM shukasAraNau ||3-74-3
After sitting on the great seat, kR^iShNa summoned all the vR^iShNi-s
including balabhadra (balarAma), the son of shini (sAtyaki),
hArdikya (kR^itavarma), shuka and sAraNa,
ugrasenaM mahAbuddhimuddhavaM nItimattaram |
yasya buddhiM samAshritya jIvante yAdavAH sukham ||3-74-4
ugrasena and uddhava with great intellect and best expert of justice,
depending on whose intellect the sons of yadu (yAdava) live comfortably.
netA cha yaduvR^iShNInAM sa tu dharmaparaH sadA |
yasya bibhyati devAshcha nItestasya mahAtmanaH ||3-74-5
uddhava was always fixed in dharma and was the leader of all the sons of
yadu (yAdava-s) and vR^iShNi-s. Even the gods were afraid of the justice of
the great soul, uddhava.
yasya buddhivashAdviShNuH shashAsa pR^ithivIM sadA |
taM cha vR^iShNivaraM vIramuddhavaM devasuprabham ||3-74-6
Depending on the intellect of uddhava, viShNu (kR^iShNa) always governed
the earth. kR^iShNa summoned that valiant uddhava, the best among vR^iShNi-s,
who is radiant as a god.
anyAnapi yadUnsarvAnuvAcha bhagavAnhariH |
Addressing uddhava and all the other sons of yadu (yAdava), Lord hari said:
shR^iNvantu mama vAkyAni yAdavAH sarva eva hi |
shR^iNu chApi vacho mahyaM pituruddhava me sakhe ||3-74-7
Let all the sons of yadu (yAdava-s) hear my words. O uddhava! O the friends
of my father! Listen to my words.
bAlyAtprabhR^iti yo yatno mama duShTanibarhaNe |
pratyakShaM bhavatA dR^iShTaM pUtanAnidhanaM nR^ipa ||3-74-8
Right from childhood, my effort was for slaying the wicked. O king! (ugrasena)
you have seen directly the slaying of pUtana.
keshI cha nihato bAlye mayA bAlena yAdavAH |
govardhano dhR^itaH shailo gAvashcha paripAlitAH ||3-74-9
O yAdava-s! In my childhood, keshI was killed by me when I was a boy.
Holding the mountain govardhana, I protected the cows.
abhiShikto.asmi shakreNa devAnAmagrataH stitaH |
kamso.api nidhanaM nIto mayA chANUramuShTikau ||3-74-10
I was anointed by shakra, placing me in front of all deva-s.
kamsa as well as both the wrestlers chANUra and muShTika were killed by me.
ugraseno.abhiShiktashcha kR^itA dvAravatI mayA |
anye chApi nR^ipA rAjanbalino nihatA mayA ||3-74-11
I anointed ugrasena as the king. The city of doors (dvAravatI) was made
by me.
O king! I killed other powerful kings as well.
yo.api vIro jarAsaMdho nigR^ihIto balAnmayA |
bhImena balinA rAjannayane mama yAdavAH ||3-74-12
O king! O yAdava-s! With my power, the valiant jarAsaMdha was killed by the
powerful bhIma by my policy.
shR^igAlo nihataH saMkhye gomantAdgachChatA mayA |
yo.api vIro durAtmAsau dAnavo narako hataH ||3-74-13
As I left the mountain gomanta, sR^igAla was killed in the battle. The
valiant son of danu, naraka, the one with a wicked soul, was also killed.
niShkaNTakamimaM lokaM kR^itavAnrAjasattamAH |
O the best among kings (ugrasena)! I have made the world devoid of bad
souls.
kiM tu vIro nR^ipo jaj~ne sakhA bhaumasya yAdavAH ||3-74-14
pauNDro vIryavatAM netA dR^iShtA chAsau sadA mama |
But, O yAdava-s! The valiant king, the friend of the son (naraka) of goddess
earth, pauNDra, the leader of the valiants, who always hates me,
still remains.
shiShyo droNasya rajendro balI brahmAstravitkR^itI ||3-74-15
shAstraj~no nItimAnsAkShAnnetA sarvasya yatnavAn |
pauNDra, the indra of kings, the disciple of droNa, is powerful. He has
the powerful weapon of brahma and he is an expert. He is an expert of
shAstra-s. He is just and a real leader of all. He is enthusiastic.
yoddhA yuddhapriyo rAjA jAmadagnyA ivAparaH ||3-74-16
king pauNDra is a fighter who likes battles.
He is like another son of jamadagni (parashurAma).
ekAntashatrurasmAkaM ChidrAnveShI sadA mama |
bAdhiShyate purIM yoddhA chChidraM yadi labheta saH ||3-74-17
He is our one enemy. He is always looking for differences among us. If
he gets an opportunity, the fighter king pauNDra will attack this city
(dvAravatI).
na hyalpasAdhyo balavAnpuNDrasyesho nR^ipottamAH |
king pauNDra, the best among kings is powerful. He is not the one who is
satisfied by a little accomplishment.
yattA bhavantastiShThantu pragR^ihItasharAsanAH ||3-74-18
yathA na bAdhate rAjA purIM yadukulAshrayAm |
All of you shall be prepared (to fight pauNDra) by taking up bows and
arrows, so that king pauNDRa will not affect the city in which the yAdava
race live.
ahaM tu yAsye kailAsaM kutashchitkAraNAnnR^ipAH ||3-74-19
sha~NkaraM dR^iShTukAmo.asmi bhUtabhAvanabhAvanaM |
O kings! I am going to kailAsa due to a reason to see sha~Nkara,
the lord of prosperity and auspiciousness, the lord who is concerned with
the welfare of all beings.
yAvadAgamanaM mahyaM tAvadyattA bhavantviha ||3-74-20
Protect this place, till the time I return.
mayA virahitAM chemAM yadi jAnAti pauNDrakaH |
AgamiShyati rAjendro yotsyate cha purImimAM ||3-74-21
If king pauNDraka knows that I am not here, the indra of kings will come
here and fight with this city.
imAM niryAdavIM kartuM shaknotIti cha me matiH |
yattA bhavata rAjendrAH khaDgaiH pAshaiH parashvadhaiH ||3-74-22
O king! He is capable of making this city devoid of yAdava-s.
This is my opinion. O the indras of kings! Be ready to fight with swords,
ropes and axes,
pAShANaiH karShaNIyaishcha sannaddhA bhavata svakaiH |
pidhAya cha kapATAni mahAdvArANi yatnataH |3-74-23
stones, catapults and your own people. Close the great entrance doors with
effort.
eka eva mahAdvAro gamanAgamane sadA |
mudrayA saha gachChantu rAj~no yo gantumIpsavaH ||3-74-24
Only one great door shall be open always for coming and going. Those who
want to go shall go with the seal of the king.
na chAmudraH praveShTavyo dvArapAlasya pashyataH |
Without the seal of the king no one shall enter as seen by the door keepers.
yAvadAgamanaM mahyaM tAvadevaM bhaviShyati ||3-74-25
mR^igayA nAtra kartavyA na cha krIDA bahiH purAt |
Till the time I return, no one shall go out of the city for hunting,
for playing or for any other purpose.
j~nAtavyAshcha pare sve cha gamanAgamane sadA ||3-74-26
Always know your own people and others who are going out and entering.
evamAdikriyA kAryA yAvadAgamanaM mama |
ityuktvA yAdavAnsarvAnsAtyakiM punarAha cha ||3-74-27
Till the time I return, these arrangements shall be made.
Speaking thus to all the yAdava-s, again, kR^iShNa spoke to sAtyaki as
follows:
iti shrImahAbhArate khileSu harivaMshe bhaviShyaparvaNi
