    Lesson 77 - kR^iShNa welcomed at badarika Ashram
vaishampAyana uvAcha
tato munigaNA dR^iShTvA devadevamupasthitam |
samApya chAgnihotrANi saMpUjyAtithisattamAn ||3-77-1
vaishampAyana said:
(O janamejaya!) Then the group of sages, seeing that the Lord
of lords (kR^iShNa, viShNu) has arrived, immediately concluded the
rituals of the sacrificial fires and honoured the best of the guests.
munayo dIrghatapasaH samAdhau kR^itanishchayAH |
jaTino muNDinaH kechichChirAdhamanisaMtatAH ||3-77-2
Some of the sages were engaged in long penances and firm in meditation
with determination. Some were having hair locks. Some had shaved heads.
Some had twisted veins.
nirmajjA nIrasAH kechidvetAlA iva kechana |
ashmakuTTAshanaparAH parNabhakShAstathA pare ||3-77-3
Some sages were without marrow and devoid of blood. Some were looking
like ghosts. Some sages were engaged in eating ground stones and others
were eating leaves.
vedavidyAvratasnAtA nirAhArA mahAtapAH |
smarantaH sarvadA viShNuM tadbhaktAstatparAyaNAH ||3-77- 4
The sages were engaged in the study of veda after bathing. Some
were engaged in great penance without food. Some were always engaged in
remembering viShNu and His devotees.
AsannamuktayaH kechitkechiddhyAnaikatatparAH |
dhyAnena manasA viShNuM dR^iShTavantastapodhanAH ||3-77-5
Some were about reach deliverance. Some were engaged in meditation. The sages
with the wealth of penance had seen viShNu in their minds by meditation.
saMvatsarAshinaH kechtitkechijjalavichAriNaH |
shakrasya bhayadAtAraH shrutismR^itiparAyanAH ||3-77-6
Some sages were eating only once in an year. Some were living in water
consuming water. Some were capable of giving fear to shakra. Some
were engaged in the study of the oral sacred knowledge (shruti) and sacred
traditions (smR^iti).
vasiShTo vAmadevashcha raibhyo dhUmrastathaiva cha |
jAbAliH kAshyapaH kaNvo bharadvAjo.atha gautamaH ||3-77-7
vasiShTa, vAmadeva, raibhya, dhUmra as well as jAbAli, kAshyapa, kaNva,
bharadvAja and gautama,
atrirashvashirA bhadraH sha~NkhaH sha~NkhanidhiH kuNiH |
pArAsharyaH pavitrAkSho yAj~navalkyo mahAmanAH ||3-77-8
atri, ashvashira, bhadra, sha~Nkha, sha~Nkhanidhi, kuNi, pArAsharya (vyAsa),
pavitrAkSha and the great soul yAj~navalkya,
kakShIvAna~NgirAshchaiva munirdIptatapAstathA |
asito devalastAta vAlmIkishcha mahAtapAH ||3-77-9
kakShivAn, a~NgiraA as well as the sage dIptatapa and also asita, devala
and the great sage vAlmiki
ete chAnye cha munayo draShTumIshvaramavyayam |
AdAyArghyaM yathAyogamuTajAtsvAtsamAyayuH ||3-77-10
- These sages as well as other sages left their hermitages, carrying
suitable offerings as required, desiring to see the Lord
having no decline (kR^iShNa, viShNu).
te cha gatvA hariM kR^iShNaM viShNumIshaM janArdanam |
bhaktinamrAstadA devaM praNemurbhaktavatsalam ||3-77-11
They, with their heads bowing down with devotion, went ahead and bowed
to the Lord, hari, kR^iShNa, viShNu, the lord who excites men,
who is affectionate to his devotees.
namo.astu kR^iShNa kR^iShNeti devadeveti keshavam |
praNavAtma~njagannAtha natAH sma shirasA hare ||3-77-12
kR^iShNa, we bow to you. kR^iShNa! kR^iShNa! O Lord of the deva-s!
keshava! O the soul of praNava (Om)! Lord of the universe! O hari! We bow
to you with our head.
kR^iShNa viShNo hR^iShIkesha keshaveti cha sarvadA |
praNAmapravaNA viprAH prAhuritthaM jagatpatim ||3-77-13
Saying always kR^iShNa! viShNu! Lord of the senses! O keshava! the sages,
the best among those who bow, bowed to the Lord of the universe.
idamarghyamidam pAdyamidaM viShTarameva cha |
kR^itArthAH sarvadA deva prasanno no jagatpatiH ||3-77-14
Here are the offerings, here are the drinkables, here is the seat. We
feel that we have done always what is to be done. O Lord! We hope that you,
the Lord of the world is pleased.
kiM kurmaH kiM nu naH kR^ityaM kashchidroShaH prabho hare |
iti prA~njalayaH sarve prAhurdevasya pashyataH ||3-77-15
What shall we do to serve you? What is to be done by us? O lord! O hari!
Have we done anything wrong? All of them said with folded hands as watched
by the Lord.
kR^iShNo.api tadyathAyogamupayujya sahAmaraiH |
kR^itaM sarvaM munivarA vardhatAM tapa uttamam ||3-77-16
kR^iShNa along with the deva-s accepted the offerings and said: O the best
among sages! You have welcomed us suitably. Let the best penances progress.
iti bruvanpurANAtmA prItastena garutmatA |
AsanaM lambhayAmAsa rAtrau devo janArdanaH ||3-77-17
Saying thus and becoming pleased, the ancient soul (viShNu), the lord
who excites people, along with garuDa, took his seat in the night.
kushalaM pR^iShTavAnbhhUyA munInAM bhAvitAtmanAm |
agnihotreShu tapasi tathA bhR^ityeShu sarvataH ||3-77-18
Again the lord enquired about the well being of the sages,
having purified souls, in the sacrificial rituals, penances as well as their
servants and all other matters.
evamAdi jagannAthaH pR^iShTavAnIshvarastadA |
sarvatra kushalaM te.atra brUyuH kR^iShNasya sarvataH ||3-77-19
Thus the lord, the Lord of the world, then enquired about everything.
Then all of them told kR^iShNa said that all is well.
AtitthyaM chakrire te tu nIvAraiH phalamUlakaiH |
devAnAmatha sarveShAM viShNoH kR^iShNasya yatnataH |
The sages offered hospitality with nIvari and the fruits and roots to all
the deva-s and viShNu-kR^iShNa taking efforts.
Atithyamupayu~njAnastataH prIto.abhavaddhariH ||3-77-20
Accepting their hospitality, lord hari (kR^iShNa, viShNu)
was pleased.
