teShAmanu mahAghorau pishAchau vikR^itAnanau |
prAMshU pi~NgalaromANau dIrghajihvau mahAhanU ||3-79-1
vaishampAyana said:
(O janamejaya!) Behind them, two highly terrible pishAcha-s,
having distorted faces, swollen chins, yellow hairs, long tongues and huge
cheek bones,
lambakeshau virUpAkShau hI hI hA heti vAdinau |
khAdantau mAMsapiTakaM pibantau rudhiraM bahu ||3-79-2
long hairs, deformed eyes, shouting hI, hI, hA, eating pieces of flesh and
drinking lots of blood,
antraveShTitasarvA~Ngau dIrghau kR^ishakR^itodarau |
lambamAnamahAprAntashUlaprotashirodharau ||3-79-3
wearing the garland of intestines (of dead animals) all over, tall, having
tiny bellies, holding huge spears having heads on the tips,
karShantau shavayUthAni bAhubhyAM tatra tatra ha |
hasantau vividhaM hAsam svajAtisadR^ishaM nR^ipa ||3-79-4
dragging groups of dead bodies with their hands here and there, and
O king (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued), laughing in many ways suitable
to their kind,
vadantau bahurUpAni vachAMsi prAkR^itAni cha |
kampayantau mahAvR^ikShAnUrupAdapraghaTTanaiH ||3-79-5
speaking raw words in many forms, shaking giant trees by kicking them with
their feet and thighs,
sR^ikkiNI lelihantau cha dantAnkaTakaTAyinau |
asthisnAyusamAkIrNau dhamanIrajjusaMtatau || 3-79-6
smacking their lips and biting their teeth , appearing as bony with veins,
with twisted veins,
vadantau kR^iShNa kR^iShneti mAdhaveti cha saMtatam |
kadA nu drakShyate viShNuH sa idAnIM kva tiShThati ||3-79-7
always saying kR^iShNa, kR^iShNa, mAdhava, asking: When can we see viShNu?
Where is he now?"
svAminaH kutra vasatiH kuto draShTuM yatAmahe |
atra vA kutra deveshaH kuto nu sthAsyate hariH ||3-79-8
Where does our lord live? Where can we see him? Where should we look for him?
Where is the Lord of gods, here or there? From where hari will speak to us?
kutaH padmpalAshAkShaH sAkShAdindrAnujo hariH |
yamAhuH puNDarIkAkShaM brahma brahmavido janAH ||3-79-9
Where is the Lord with eyes as beautiful as lotus flower? Where is hari,
the real younger brother of indra? Those who know brahma say that the Lord
with eyes as beautiful as lotus (kR^iShNa, viShNu) is brahma.
tamajaM puruShaM viShNuM draShTumabhyudhyatA vayam |
antakAle jagannAthaM pravivesha jagattrayam ||3-79-10
We wish to see the Lord viShNu, who is not born, and who is the puruSha.
At the time of the end of the worlds, all the three worlds enter the Lord of
the worlds, viShNu.
tamajaM vishvakartAraM kuto drakShyAma sAMpratam |
yasya vistAra evaiSha lokaH prANinivAsinaH ||3-79-11
Where can the lord who is not born, the creator of the universe, be seen?
This world in which all the beings live, is created by him.
taM draShTuM devamIshAnaM yatAmaH sAMprataM harim |
dashA ghoratamA loke vidviShTA sarvajantubhiH ||3-79-12
Now we, having a most terrible state in this world, against all the living
beings, shall make efforts to see that Lord of gods, hari.
paishAchIyaM samutpannA kathaM nau prAvishadbalAt |
naramAMsAsthikaluShA sarvabhItipradAyinI ||3-79-13
How did the state of being pishAcha-s, mingled with human flesh and bones,
causing fear to all, come to us forcibly?
aho nau duShkR^itaM karma prAktane karmasa~nchaye |
atraiva mahatI prItirvartate sarvadA tathA ||3-79-14
Alas! We must have done sinful deeds in previous births. We are
always feeling greatly pleased in this (birth).
yAvannau duShkR^itaM karma tAvatsthAsyati tAdR^ishI |
dashA sA sarvavidviShTA prANipIDanakAriNI ||3-79-15
As long as we have sinful deeds, our state will be like this, against all,
causing harm to the living beings.
sarvathA duShkR^itaM karma bahubhirjanmasa~nchayaiH |
tathA hi tatphalaM ghoramadyApi na nivartate ||3-79-16
We had always done sinful deeds in many previous births. That is why,
the terrible results (of the sinful deeds) do not revert even today.
yatAH sma prANino hantuM shvagaNaiH saha sAMpratam |
tathA hi prANino loke bAlyamAdau samAsthitAH ||3-79-17
Now we attempt to kill the animals along with groups of dogs.
In this world, the living beings first start in the state of childhood.
aj~nAnAvR^itachittAshcha kR^ityAkR^ityaM na jAnate |
tathA yauvanino bhrAntA viShayairbahulIkR^itAH ||3-79-18
The minds (of chidren) are surrounded by ignorance. They are not aware of
what is to be done and what is not to be done. When they attain adulthood,
they are confused with many worldly subjects.
yatante shreyase naiva tato viShayasaMsthitAH |
viShayAviShTachittA hi manuShyA na vijAnate ||3-79-19
Alas! With their minds fixed in worldly subjects, the human beings,
not knowing about it, do not attempt to achieve what is good for them.
tathA cha vR^iddhabhAve tu vyAdhibhirbahubhirvR^itAH |
jvarAdibhirmahAghorairnAnAduHkhavidhAyibhiH || 3-79-20
yatante na hi vai shreyo vinaShTendriyagocharAH |
In the same way, when they become old, they suffer from many diseases and
become affected with terrible fever, causing sorrow. They, losing their senses
and vision, will not attempt to achieve what is good for them.
tato mR^itA garbhavAse vasanti satataM narAH ||3-79-21
viNmUtrakalile ghore duHkhairbahubhirAchitAH |
chyavante tu tato ghorAdgarbhAtsaMsAramaNDale ||3-79-22
Afterwards, becoming dead, the men will always begin to live in the womb,
mingled with excreta and urine, suffering many terrible sorrows.
From the terrible wombs, they fall to the sphere of the circuit of mundane
existence.
parasparaM vihiMsantaH kurvantaH karmasaMchayam |
mahatyevaM sadA ghore saMsAre duHkhasa~Nkule ||3-79-23
pApAni bahurUpANi kurvate.aj~nAnatastadA |
They kill each other and do a group of deeds. In this manner, in the terrible
circuit of mundane existence mixed with sorrow, then, they commit sinful deeds of many forms
due to ignorance.
saMsArasyaiSha mahimA vistR^itaH sarvajantuShu ||3-79-24
achChedyaH shastrasaMpAtairupAyairbahubhiH sadA |
Thus the greatness of the living world is vast for all beings, which
can not be cut by using weapons or applying many policies.
etasmAnna nivartante martyAH prAkR^itabuddhayaH ||3-79-25
The human beings , having raw intelligence, will not withdraw from this
living world.
imaM hatvA manuShyendramidamasmAddharAmyaham |
chorayitvA dhanamidaM hariShyAmyAdadAmyaham ||3-79-26
Killing this indra of human beings, I will gain this from him. Stealing
this wealth, I will take away this.
nirbhartsyainamimaM shAntaM hariShyAmi dhanaM balI |
ityAdivyAkulA mUrkhA yatante prANipIDanam ||3-79-27
Abusing this peaceful person, I, the powerful one, will take away his
wealth. Thus the foolish and confused men will torture the living beings.
asyaiva duHkhamUlasya saMsArasya sadA hariH |
bheShajaM sarvathA devaH sha~NkhachakragadAdharaH ||3-79-28
Lord hari (kR^iShNa, viShNu), the one holding the conch, chakra and mace
in his hands, is always the medicine for the living world having
sorrow as the root cause.
AdidevaH purANAtmA AtmA brahmavidAM sadA |
te vayaM sarvayatnena drakShyAmaH sarvathA harim |
That soul is the prime soul, the ancient soul, always for those who know
brahma. We shall definitely try to see hari with all our efforts.
itthaM pishAchau bhAshantau prAdurAstAM hareH puraH || 3-79-29
The pishAcha-s who were speaking thus, arrived in front of hari.
iti shrImAbhArate khileShu harivaMshe bhaviShyaparvaNi
kailAsayAtrAyAmekonAshItitamo.adhyAyaH
