Lesson 81 - ghaNTAkarNa blessed with vision of viShNu

tataH sa bhagavAnviShNuH pishAchaM dR^iShTavAMstadA |
chintayantaM svamAtmAnaM shuddhibuddhisamanvitam ||3-81-1

(O janamejaya!) Then the Lord hari, viShNu (kR^iShNa) saw the pishAcha, meditating on his own (the lord's) soul, along with a pure intellect.

AtmanyavasthitaM sAkShAtpaThantaM praNavaM sakR^it |
prArthayantaM svamAtmAnamekAnte niyataM hariH ||3-81-2

The pishacha was fixed in the real soul, reciting praNava simultaneously and praying to his own (the lord's) soul in solitude and restrained.

achintayajjagannAthaH kAraNaM punyasa~nchaye |
dhyAtvA tu suchiraM viShNuH kAraNaM puNyakarmaNaH ||3-81-3

The Lord of the universe (kR^iShNa, viShNu) thought about his accumulated merit. Lord viShNu meditated for some time about the reason for the meritorious acts (done by the pishAcha).

dhanadasyopadeshena paThansubahushaH kShitau |
vAsudeveti kR^iShNeti mAdhaveti cha mAM sadA ||3-81-4

By the advise of the lord of wealth, on the earth, the pishAcha always recited my names such as vAsudeva, kR^iShNa, mAdhava,

janArdana hare viShNo bhUtabhAvanabhAvana |
narAkAra jagannAtha nArAyaNa parAyaNa ||3-81-5

janArdana, hari, viShNu, the one who causes the welfare of living beings, creator, the one who is in the form of man, lord of the universe, nArAyaNa, the final refuge.

iti mAM nAmabhirnityaM paThatyeva divAnisham |
svapnajjAgrAMstathA tiShThanbhu~njangachChaMstathA vadan ||3-81-6

Thus the terrible pishAcha always used to recite my names during the day and night, during dreaming, waking as well as standing, eating, moving as also speaking,

bhakShayanmAMsapiTakaM piba~nchChoNitameva vA |
bAdhamAnaM cha suchiraM hatvA chApi mR^igAnbahUn ||3-81-7

eating the collection of meat and also drinking the blood as well as during the long time of following and killing many animals.

hanane bhojane chaiSha jAgratsvapne tathaiva cha |
sarveShvapi cha kAryeShu kartAhamiti manyate ||3-81-8

During killing, eating as also waking up and dreaming as well, during all actions, he considers that I am (viShNu, kR^iShNa) the one who does (all the actions).

etasya karmaNaH pAka eSha ghorasya karmaNaH |
nishchityaivaM jagannAthaH prItastasya babhUva ha ||3-81-9

This is the time for ending his terrible acts. Deciding thus, the Lord of the universe (kR^iShNa, viShNu) became highly pleased with the pishAcha.

adarshayatsvamAtmAnamananyasya jagatpatiH |
shuddhe.antaHkaraNe tasya pishAchasyApi bhUmipa ||3-81-10

O the lord of earth (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued)! Then the Lord of the universe (kR^iShNa, viShNu) showed him, who was not another, his own soul (form) in the pure inner mind of the pishAcha.

sa cha ghoraH pishAcho.api dadarshAtmani keshavam |
pItakausheyavasanaM padmAkShaM shyAmalaM hariM ||3-81-11

Then the terrible pishAcha saw keshava (kR^iShNa, viShNu), hari, in his own soul, wearing yellow, silk clothes, having eyes as beautiful as the lotus flower, having dark blue colour.

sha~NkhinaM chakriNaM viShNuM sragviNaM gadinaM vibhum |
kirITinaM kaustubhinaM shrIvatsAchChAditorasam ||3-81-12

The Lord viShNu was holding the conch, chakra, garland and the mace. He was wearing a crown. He was wearing kaustubha and his chest was decorated with the auspicious mark, shrIvatsa.

nIlameghanibhaM kAntaM garuDasthaM prabha~njanam |
chaturbhujaM shubhagiraM nishchalaM sarvagaM shivam ||3-81-13

The most desirable Lord having the colour of a dark blue cloud, was mounted on garuDa. He looked like the god of wind. He was having four arms, speaking auspicious words. The lord was still, all pervading and auspicious.

anAdinidhanaM nityaM mAyAvinamamAyinam |
satyayuktaM sadA shuddhaM buddhigamyaM sadAmalam ||3-81-14

The eternal Lord was having neither beginning nor the end. The lord of illusion was not having any illusion (the vision was real), always yoked with truth and purity. The Lord, approachable with intellect was always without any impurity.

manasyevaM jagannAthaM dR^iShTvA viShNumanekadhA |
anunmIlyaiva nayane kR^itArtho.asmItyamanyata ||3-81-15

Seeing the Lord of the universe, viShNu, in his mind many times, the pishAcha, without opening his eyes, considered himself to be the one who has achieved what is to be achieved.

atha dR^iShTo harirviShNuH sAkShAtsarvatragaH shubhaH |
prasanno hi harirmahyaM tenAhaM dR^iShTavAnharim ||3-81-16

I have seen hari, viShNu, the real auspicious Lord who pervades everywhere. hari is definitely pleased with me. I have seen hari (viShNu) in my mind.

siddhaM me janmanaH kR^ityaM kimataH kR^ityamasti me |
granthayo mama nirbhinnA vashyAnyevendriyANi me ||3-81-17

I have achieved the purpose of my birth. There is nothing further to be done by me. My bondages (attachments) are broken. All my sensory organs are under my control.

prAyeNa jitamityeva mano manye smR^ite harau |
IshaNA cha nirastA me prasanno.aham tathAbhavam ||3-81-18

When hari (viShNu) is in my memory, my mind has accomplished success. All my hastening is over. I am now pleased and satisfied.

etebhyo.api pishAchebhyo nirmuktaH sAMprataM tathA |
yo.asau mamAnujaH sAkShAtsa cha bhaktastathA harau ||3-81-19

I have now become free from the group of pishAcha-s. My younger brother is also a real devotee of hari (viShNu).

With the passage of time, he will also become free. He will also get united with viShNu.

ityevaM chintayitvA sa AntrapAshaM vibhidya cha ||3-81-20
krameNa prANAnunmuchya vilokya cha dishAstathA |
sharIraM sugamaM kR^itvA prAvishatsa sukhena ha ||3-81-21

Thinking thus, the pishAcha broke the bindings of the garland of intestines. Gradually he released his breath and slowly he looked at all directions. He relaxed his body and came out of the meditation comfortably.

iti shrImahAbhArate khileShu harivaMshe bhaviShyaparvaNi kailAsayAtrAyAM pishAchasya viShNutsAkShAtkAre ekAshItitamo.adhyAyaH
