tatashcha yAdavAH sarve dR^iShTvA sainikasa~nchayam |
rAtrau cha vyasanaM prAptaM mahAshastrasamAkulam ||3-94-1

(O janamejaya!) Then all the yAdava-s saw the large assembly of soldiers. Misfortune (the army of enemies) along with great weapons arrived in the night.

mahAvAtasamudbhUtaM kalpAnte sAgaropamam |
sannaddhAH samapadyanta shastriNo yuddhalAlasAH ||3-94-2

Like an ocean agitated by the great winds at the end of the era, the yAdava-s, who enjoy fighting, took up weapons and became ready (to fight).

gR^ihItadIpikAH sarve yAdavAH shastrayodhinaH |
sAtyakirbalabhadrashcha hArdikyo nishaThastathA ||3-94-3

All the yAdava-s, fighting with weapons, took up lighted torches. sAtyaki, balabhadra, hArdikya (kR^itavarma) and nishaTha,

uddhavo.atha mahAbuddhirugraseno mahAbalaH |
anye cha yAdavAH sarve kavachapragrahe ratAH ||3-94-4

uddhava, the one with great intellect, the highly powerful ugrasena as well as all the other yAdava-s, took up shields and got ready.

samastayuddhakushalA rAtrau sannAhayodhinaH |
shastriNaH khaDginashchaiva sarve shastrasamAkulAH ||3-94-5

All were experts in battle. They, becoming ready to fight in the night, took up weapons and swords and all other weapons.

yuddhAya samapadyanta bahavo bAhushAlinaH |
rathino gadinashchaiva sAdinaH sAyudhAstathA ||3-94-6

Many of them, having strong arms, reached the battle field, along with weapons, mounted on chariots as well as horses.

nityayuktA mahAtmAno dhanvinaH puruShottamAH |
niryayurnagarAttUrNam dIpikAbhiH samantataH ||3-94-7

Those great souls, expert bowmen, the best puruSha-s, who were always ready, proceeded from the city, all around, carrying torches.

kutaH pauNDraka ityevaM vadantaH sarvasAtvatAH |
dIpikAdIpito desho nistamAH samapadyata ||3-94-8

All the sAtvata-s (yAdava-s) asked: Where is pauNDraka? Lighted by the torches, that place became devoid of darkness.

tato vitimiro deshaH samantAtpratyapadyata |
yuddhaM samabhavadghoraM vR^iShNibhiH shatrubhiH saha ||3-94-9

Immediately, that place became devoid of darkkness all around. Then, a terrible battle took place between the vR^iShNi-s and their enemies.

tato mahAnsamabhavatsannAdo romaharShaNaH |
hayA hayaiH samAyuktA gajAshcha gajayUthapaiH ||3-94-10

Then there was a great noise, causing bristling of the hairs of the body due to excitement. The horses opposed the horses and the elephants opposed the herd of elephants.

rathA rathaiH samAyuktAH sAdibhiH sAdinastathA |
khaDginaH khaDgibhiH sArdhaM gadibhirgadinastathA ||3-94-11

The chariots opposed the chariots. The horsemen opposed the horsemen. The swordsmen opposed the swordsmen and the mace fighters opposed the mace fighters.

parasparavyatIkAro raNa AsItsudAruNaH |
mahApralayasa~NkShobhaH shabdasteShAM mahAtmanAm ||3-94-12

dhAvantaH praharantyetAnhantyetAn sarvato nR^ipAn |
ayameSha mahAbAhuH khaDgI patati vIryavAn ||3-94-13

Those who were running were beaten, kings were being killed all over. "This valiant swordsman having strong arms is falling now."

ayameSha sharo ghoro vartate.atisudAruNaH |
gadI chAyaM mahAvIryaH sarvAnno bAdhate nR^ipaH ||3-94-14

"This bowman with highly terrible arrows is standing here now." "This king, a highly valiant mace fighter is affecting all of us."

ayaM rathI sharI chapI gadI tUNI tanutravAn |
yAdR^ishaH sarvato yAti kuntapANirayaM balI ||3-94-15

"This chariot fighter is also having bow, arrows and quiver as well as maces." "This powerful fighter having spears is capable of going all over."

ayamatra mahAshUlI saMshritaH sarvatodisham |
gajo.ayaM saviShANAgro vartate sarvataH prati ||3-94-16

"This fighter having a great spear reaches in all directions." "This tusker with poison at the tip of the tusk is reaching at all places."

atisarvatragaH shUro vegavAnvAtasannibhaH |
sharA~nchCharaiH samAhanti daNDAndaNDairjagatpate ||3-94-17

"This valiant, having the speed similar to the wind is reaching at all places." O the king of the universe! (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued) The arrow is destroyed by the arrow and the staff is broken by the staff.

kuntAnkuntaiH samAjaghnurgadAbhishcha gadAstathA |
parighAnparighaiH sArdhaM shUlAnchChUlaiH samantataH ||3-94-18

There was a terrible battle in the night with loud noises causing the bristling of the hairs of the body due to excitement.

kechidgrastAH samApetuH pR^ithivyAM pR^ithivIkShitaH |
kechitpatitashliShTAshcha viprakIrNashirodharAH ||3-94-22

some kings, lords of the earth, were caught and fell down on the ground. Some joined those who already fell down. Some had their crowns completely shattered.

petururvyAM mahAvIryA rAjAnaH shastrapANayaH |
kechittu bhinnavarmANaH samApetuH sahasradhA ||3-94-23

The great valiant kings, holding weapons in their hands, fell down on the earth. Some had their shields broken. Some ran and fought against each other.

parasparaM samAshritya parasparavadhaiShiNaH |
nyastashastrA mahAtmAnaH samantAtkShatavigrahAH ||3-94-24

The fighters desiring to kill each other, fought against each by holding each other. The great souls fought with their wounded bodies even after losing their weapons.

peturgatAsavaH kechidyamarAShTravivardhanAH |
evaM te nihatA rAjanyodhitAH sarva eva tu ||3-94-25

Some fell down dead, increasing the population of the kingdom of the god of death. O king! (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued) All of them fought against each other in this manner.

etasminnantare shUra ekalavyo niShAdayaH |
dhanurgR^ihya mahAghoraM kAlAntakayamopamaH ||3-94-26

In between this, the valiant niShAda king, ekalavya, comparable to the killer of the god of death, yama, took up a highly terrible bow

paraH shataiH sharANAM tu nishitairmarmabhedhibhiH ||3-94-27
vR^iShNInAM cha balaM sarvaM pothayAmAsa sarvataH |
yuddhyataH shastrapANIMshcha kShatriyAnvIryavattarAn ||3-94-28

Shooting more than hundred sharp arrows capable of splitting the soft spots, he oppressed all the army of vR^iShNi-s all around and the best valiant kShatriya-s who were fighting holding weapons in their hands.

nishaThaM pa~nchaviMshatyA sharANAM nataparvaNAm |
sAraNaM dashabhirviddhvA hArdikyaM pa~nchabhiH sharaiH ||3-94-29

He shot twenty and five arrows with sharp tips at nishaTha and ten arrows at sAraNa and five arrows at hArdikya (kR^itavarma).

ugrasenaM navatyAshu vasudevaM cha saptabhiH |
uddhavaM dashabhishchaiva hyakrUraM pa~nchabhiH sharaiH ||3-94-30

He shot ninety arrows at ugrasena and seven arrows at vasudeva , ten arrows at uddhava and five arrows at akrUra.

evamekaikashaH sarve nihatA nishitaiH sharaiH |
vidrAvya yAdavIM senAM nAma vishrAvya vIryavAn ||3-94-31

ityAha siMhanAdena siMhAnvismApayanniva ||3-94-33

Now, where is the one holding the mace, the one who holds the plough, the one who is (balarAma) excited with pride? The niShAda king ekalavya spoke thus in the loud voice of a lion, even surprising the lions.
