vaishampAyana uvAcha
kravyAdAH sarva evAshu bhakShayantastadA shavam |
hasanto vividhaM ghoraM nadayanto vasuMdharAm ||3-99-1
vaishampAyana said:
(O janamejaya!) Then those who eat raw flesh ate all the dead bodies. They laughed in many ways with terrible sound echoing on the earth.
rAkShasAshcha pishAchAshcha pibantaH shoNitaM bahu |
AshikhaM bhu~njate rAja~nChavasya pishitAshanAH ||3-99-2
O king! (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued): The rAkShasa-s and pishAcha-s drank lots of blood. The eaters of raw flesh, ate the dead bodies from nail upto the hair on the head.
nR^ityanti sma tadA rAjannagaryAM raNatoshitAH |
O king! (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued): They, becoming happy due to the battle, danced in that city.
kAkA balAkA gR^idhrAshcha shyenA gomAyavastathA ||3-99-3
bhakShayantaH pravartante rAkShasAshchaiva dAruNAH |
Crows, cranes, vultures, eagles as also jackals and terrible rAkShasa-s roamed in the battle field, eating the dead bodies.
etasminnantare vIro niShAdo labdhasaMj~nakaH ||3-99-4
hatAnsarvAnsamAlokya niShAdAnnagachAriNaH |
gadAmAdAya kupito rAmameva jagAma ha ||3-99-5
During this time, the valiant niShAda king (ekalavya) regained his consciousness. Seeing all the residents of the mountains (niShAda-s) killed, he became angry. Taking up a mace, he opposed (bala)rAma.
jaghAna gadayA rAjaMshChatradeshe niShAdapaH |
O king! (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued) The niShAda king (ekalavya) struck balarAma on the collar bone with his mace.
tato rAmo gadI rAjanniShAdaM bAhushAlinam ||3-99-6
Ajaghne gadayA krUraM madamatto halAyudhaH |
Then O king! (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued) Then (bala)rAma, intoxicated with pride, having the plough as weapon, with the mace, struck the cruel niShAda king, ekalavya, having powerful arms.
tayoshcha tumulaM yuddhaM gadAbhyAM samavartata ||3-99-7
Then there was a tumultuous battle of maces between them.
AkAshe shabda AsIttu tayoryuddhe mahAbhuja |
samudrANAM yathA ghoShaH sarveShAM sannigachChatAm ||3-99-8
O the one with powerful arms! (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued) While they were fighting, the sky became full of sounds, similar to the sounds when there is a collision among all the oceans.
kalpakShaye mahArAja shabdaH sutumulo.abhavat |
kShobhito nAgarAjashcha nAgAH kShobhaM samAyayuH ||3-99-9
O great king! (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued) Similar to the tumultuous sound at the decline of the era, the king of serpents as well as the prominent serpents became agitated.
pR^ithivI chAntarikShaM cha sarvaM shabdamayaM babhau |
All the entire earth and the sky became full of variety of sounds.
tataH sa pauNDrako rAjA sAtyakiM vR^iShNinandanam ||3-99-10
gadayaiva jaghAnAshu satvaraM raNakovidaH |
Then king pauNDraka, the expert in battle, quickly struck sAtyaki, the son of vR^iShNi-s with his mace.
yuyudhAno balI rAjanvAsudevaM jaghAna ha ||3-99-11
tayoshcha tumulaH shabdaH prAdurAsInmahAraNe |
Then O king! (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued) the powerful yuyudhAna (sAtyki) struck vAsudeva (pauNDraka). There was a tumultuous sound in the great battle between them.
chaturNAM yudyatAM rAjanparasparavadhaiShiNAm ||3-99-12
brahmANDakShobhaNo rAjanChabda AsItsudAruNaH |
O king! (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued) As all the four were fighting with a desire to kill each other, there was a terrible sound agitating the universe.
tato rajaH prAdurabhUttasminsa~NgrAmamUrdhani ||3-99-13
tArakA niShprabhA rAjaMstamasyevaM kShayaM gate |
Then the sphere of light (sun) rose at the battlefront. The stars lost their splendor. O king! (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued). The darkness started declining.
uShasi pratibuddhAyAM tato niHsheShatAM yayau ||3-99-14
udito bhagavAnsUryashchandrashcha kShayamAyayau |
When the morning light appeared, all the darkness was destroyed. The sun lord rose up and the moon started declining.
tayoryuddhaM prAdurabhUchchaturNAM bAhushAlinAm |
devAsurasamaM rAjannudito bhAskare mahat ||3-99-15
O king! (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued) After the sun rose, again there was a great battle, among all the four with powerful arms, equal to the battle between the gods and the demons.
