O king! (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued) Bowing to all the sages
(of badari) and mounting on garuDa, the great lord viShNu quickly reached
the city of doors (dvAravatI).
sumahA~nChushruve shabdasteShAM yuddhaM prakurvatAm |
gachChatA devadevena purIM dvAravatIM nR^ipa ||3-100-3
O king! (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued) The lord of gods, kR^iShNa,
reaching the city of doors (dvAravatI), heard the loud sounds of them
fighting the battle.
achintayajjagannAthaH ko tvayaM shabda utthitaH |
sa~NgrAmasaMbhavo ghora AryashaineyasaMyutaH ||3-100-4
The lord of the universe (kR^iShNa) thought: Why are these sounds coming?
This could be coming from the terrible battle along with the elder brother
(balarAma) and the son of shini (sAtyaki).
vyaktamAgatavAnpauNDro nagarIM dvArakAmanu |
tena yuddhaM samabhavatpauNDrakeNa durAtmanA ||3-100-5
It is clear that pauNDraka has come to the city of doors (dvAraka ).
A battle must be taking place with the wicked soul, pauNDraka.
yadUnAM vR^iShNivIrANAM yuddhyatAmitaretaram |
shabdo.ayaM sumahAnvyakto nAtra kAryA vichAraNA ||3-100-6
It is definite that these loud sounds must be coming when the yAdava-s,
the valiants of the race of vR^iShNi-s are fighting with the enemies.
There is nothing else to be thought on this.
ityevaM chintayitvA tu dadhmau sha~NkhaM mahAravam |
pA~nchajanyaM hariH sAkShAtprINayanvR^iShNipu~NgavAn ||3-100-7
Thinking thus, the lord, hari (viShNu, kR^iShNa) himself,
blew his conch pA~nchajanya, with a great sound pleasing the best among the
vR^iShNi-s.
rodasI pUrayAmAsa tena shabdena keshavaH |
yAdavA vR^iShNayashchaiva shrutvA sha~Nkhasya te ravam ||3-100-8
With that sound, keshava (kR^iShNa) filled the earth and the sky.
The yAdava-s and vR^iShNi-s heard the sound of that conch and said:
vyaktamAyAti bhagavAnpA~nchajanyaravo hyayam |
iti te menire rAjanvR^iShNayo yAdavAstathA ||3-100-9
It is definite that lord kR^iShNa is coming. This is the sound of his
conch, pA~nchajanya. O king! (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued)
Then the vR^iShNi-s and yAdava-s knew so.
nirbhayAH samapadyanta vR^iShNayo yAdavAshcha te |
tasminneva kShaNe dR^iShTastArkShyashcha patatAM varaH ||3-100-10
Then the vR^iShNi-s and yAdava-s became devoid of fear. At that moment
itself, the best among the birds, tArkShya (garuDa) became
visible to them.
tatashcha devakIsUnurdR^iShTastairyAdaveshvaraH |
Immediately, the son of devakI, the lord of yAdava-s (kR^iShNa) also became
visible.
sUtAshcha mAgadhAshchaiva puro yAnti jagatpateH ||3-100-11
stutyA stutaM hariM viSnNumIshvaraM kamalekShaNam |
The royal bards and panegyrists came forward to the lord of the
universe, and praised hari, viShNu, the lord, whose eyes bestow prosperity
with their looks.
gatAshcha yAdavAH sarve parivavrurjanArdanam ||3-100-12
All the yAdava-s surrounded janArdana (viShNu, kR^iShNa).
kR^iShNastu garuDaM bhUyo gachCha tvaM nAkamuttamam |
ityuktvA garuDaM viShNurvisR^ijya yadunandanaH ||3-100-13
kR^iShNa told garuDa: You go to the best of heavens. Saying this, viShNu,
kR^iShNa, the son of yadu, released garuDa.
dArukaM punarAhedaM rathamAnaya me prabho |
sa tatheti pratij~nAya rathamAdAya satvaram ||3-100-14
Then kR^iShNa told dAruka: O lord! Bring my chariot.
Acknowledging "Let it be so", dAruka quickly brought the chariot and
ratho.ayaM bhagavandeva kimataH kR^ityamasti me |
ityuktvA rathamAdAya praNamyAgre sthito hareH ||3-100-15
saying that "O lord! O deva! Here is the chariot. What shall I do further?"
he brought the chariot, bowed and stood in front of hari (viShNu,
kR^iShNa).
gate.atha garuDe viShNU rathamAruhya satvaram |
yatra yuddhaM samabhavattatra yAti sma keshavaH ||3-100-16
As garuDa left, viShNu (kR^iShNa) quickly mounted the chariot.
keshava (kR^iShNa) reached the place where the battle was taking place.
tatra gatvA mahArAja yudhyatAM cha mahAtmanAm |
pA~nchajanyaM mahAsha~NkhaM dadhmau yaduvR^iShottamaH ||3-100-17
O great king! (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued) Reaching the battlefield
where the great souls are fighting, the best among the bulls of yAdava-s,
kR^iShNa, blew the great conch, pA~nchajanyaM.
pauNDro.atha vAsudevastu kR^ShNaM dR^iShTvA raNotsukam |
sAtyakiM pR^iShThataH kR^itvA vAsudevamupAgamat ||3-100-18
Seeing kR^iShNa, keen to fight the battle, pauNDraka vAsudeva,
left sAtyaki behind and came in front of vAsudeva (kR^iShNa).
kruddho.atha sAtyakI rAjan vArayAmAsa pauNDrakam |
na gantavyamito rAjanneSha dharmaH sanAtanaH ||3-100-19
Then O king! (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued),
sAtyaki became angry and blocked pauNDraka and said: O king! Do not go away.
This can not be the eternal dharma.
jitvA mAM gachCha rAjendra paraM yoddhuM mahAraNe |
kShatriyo.asi mahAvIra sthite mayi raNotsuke ||3-100-20
Conquering me, O the indra of kings! (pauNDraka), you may proceed to fight
against another enemy in the great battle, as I, a great valiant kShatriya,
is standing here, keen to fight the battle.
eSha te garvamakhilaM nAshayiShyAmi saMyuge |
ityuktvA chAgratastasthau gachChato yAdaveshvaraH ||3-100-21
pauNDrasya shininaptA tu pashyataH keshavasya ha |
Now I will destroy all your pride in the battle field. Speaking thus,
the lord of yAdava-s, the grandson of shini, (sAtyaki),
stood in front of pauNDraka, as he was going away, as watched by keshava,
(kR^iShNa).
avaj~nAya shineH pautraM kR^iShNameva jagAma ha ||3-100-22
Even then, despising the grandson of shini (sAtyaki), pauNDraka proceeded
towards kR^iShNa.
nirbhartsya sahasA bhUyaH sAtyakiH krodhamUrchChitaH |
gadayA prAharatpauNDraM vAsudevasya pashyataH ||3-100-23
Then, terribly angered, sAtyaki abused pauNDraka and suddenly
struck him again with his mace as vAsudeva (kR^iShNa) was watching.
yathAprANaM yathAyogaM sAtyakiH satyavikramaH |
dR^iShTvAtha bhagavAnevaM sAtyakiM prashashaMsa ha ||3-100-24
sAtyaki, the truly valiant fighter, struck pauNDraka with full
concentration and strength. Seeing this, lord kR^iShNa praised sAtyaki.
nivArya sAtyakiM kR^iShNo yatheShTaM kriyatAmasau |
upAramadyathAyogaM sAtyakiH kR^iShNavAritaH ||3-100-25
kR^iShNa prevented sAtyaki saying that "Let him (pauNDraka) do as he likes.
sAtyaki, prevented by kR^iShNa withdrew as required.
sa tataH pauNDrako rAjA vAsudevamuvAcha ha |
bho bho yAdava gopAla idAnIM kva gato bhavAn ||3-100-26
Then king pauNDraka told vAsudeva (kR^iShNa): O yAdava! O gopAla!
Where did you go at this time?
tvAM draShTumatha saMprApto vAsudevo.asmi sAMpratam |
To see you, I vAsudeva, prompyly came here.
hatvA tvAM sabalaM kR^iShNa balairbahubhiranvitaH ||3-100-27
ahameko bhaviShyAmi vAsudevo mahItale |
O kR^iShNa, I have many armies with me. Killing you along with your army,
I will become the only vAsudeva on the face of earth.
yachchakraM tava govinda prathitaM suprabhaM mahat ||3-100-28
anena tava chakreNa pIDito.asmi cha tadraNe |
O govinda! (kR^iShNa!) I will destroy the famous and greatly splendorous
chakra you have with my chakra in this battle.
chakramastIti tadvIryaM tava mAdhava sAMpratam ||3-100-29
nashayiShyAmi tatsarvaM sarvakShatrasya pashyataH |
O mAdhava! (kR^iShNa!) Today, I will destroy all your valiance and pride
that you have this chakra, as all the kShatriya-s are watching.
shAr~NgIti mAM vijAnIhi na tvaM shAr~NgIti siShyate ||3-100-30
sha~NkhI chAhaM gadI chAhaM chakrI chAhaM janArdana ||3-100-31
Know that I have a bow, shAr~Nga. You are not the one who is known as the
one who holds shAr~Nga. I have a conch. I have a mace.
O janArdana! I have a chakra as well.
mAmeva hi sadA brUyurjAnanto vIryashAlinaH |
Adau tvaM balavadvR^iddhAnhatvA strIbAlakAnbahUn ||3-100-32
The great valiant shall always know and speak about me only. In the
beginning, by killing many powerful old men, women as well as boys,
gAshcha hatvA mahAgarvastava saMprati vartate |
tatte.ahaM vyapaneShyAmi yadi tiShThasi matpuraH ||3-100-33
and by killing cattle, you have great pride. I will destroy your pride
today if you stand in front of me in the battle field.
shastraM gR^ihANa govinda yadi yoddhuM vyavasthitaH |
ityuktvA bANamAdAya tasthau pArshve jagatpateH ||3-100-34
O govinda (kR^iShNa)! If you are ready for battle, take up weapons.
Saying thus, pauNDraka took up an arrow and stood by the side of the lord
of universe (kR^iShNa).
etadvachanamAkarNya vAsudevena bhAShitam |
smitaM kR^itvA hariH kR^iShNo babhAShe pauNDrakaM nR^ipam ||3-100-35
Hearing the words spoken by (pauNDraka) vAsudeva, hari (viShNu, kR^iShNa)
spoke to king pauNDraka.
kAmaM vada nR^ipa tvaM hi pAtakyasmi sadA nR^ipa |
goghAtI bAlaghAtI cha strIhantA sarvathA nR^ipa ||3-100-36
O king! You may speak as you wish. O king! I am always a sinner.
O king! I am a killer of cattle (killing of vR^iShabhAsura),
boys (causing the death of ShaDgarbha-s by kaMsa) and women (pUatana)
by all means.
chakrI bhava gadI rAja~nChAr~NgI cha satataM bhava |
nAmadheyaM vR^ithA mahyaM vAsudeveti cha prabho ||3-100-37
O king! You always be the holder of chakra, holder of mace as well as the
holder of the bow, shAr~Nga. O lord! Let my name, vAsudeva,
be always in vain.
shAr~NgI chakrI gadI sha~NkhItyevamAdi vR^ithA mama |
kiM tu vakShyAmi ki~nchittu shR^iNuShva yadi manyase ||3-100-38
Let my name as the holder of the bow shAr~Nga, holder of chakra,
holder of gada and the holder of conch be always in vain. However
I am speaking some thing which you may hear if you agree.
kShatriyA balino ye tu sthite mayi jagatpatau ||3-100-38
tathAnubruvate tvAM hi jIvatyeva mayi prabho |
O king! Will the powerful kShatriya-s speak about you as such,
as long as I am alive as the lord of the universe?
yatte chakraM mahAghoramasurAntakaraM mahat ||3-100-39
tattulyaM mama chakraM tu vR^ittato na tu vIryataH |
My chakra will be equal to your highly terrible chakra, the destroyer of
asura-s, only in circumference
and not in valiance.
AyudheShvatha sarvatra shabdasAdR^ishyamasti te ||3-100-40
In all our weapons there is a similarity in sound (name).
gopo.ahaM sarvadA rAjanprANinAM prANadaH sadA |
goptA sarveShu lokeShu shAstA duShTasya sarvadA ||3-100-41
O king! I am always a cowherd. I am always the provider of life force for
the living beings. I am the one who protect all the worlds.
I am the one who always governs the wicked.
katthanaM sarvakAryaM hi jitvA shatrUnnR^ipAdhama |
ajitvA kiM bhavAnbrUte sthite mayi cha shastriNi ||3-100-42
O vile king! I need to speak about all after conquering the enemy.
Why are you talking without conquering me, who stands holding weapons.
hatvA mAM brUhi rAjendra yadi shakto.asi pauNDraka |
sthito.ahaM chakramAshritya rathI chApI gadAsimAn ||3-100-43
O the indra of kings! O pauNDraka! If you are powerful,
then talk after killing me.
I am standing here depending on the chakra, mounted on the chariot,
holding the bow, mace as well as the sword.
rathamAruhya yuddhAya sannaddho bhava mAnada |
ityuktvA bhagavAnviShNuH siMhanAdaM vyanInadat ||3-100-44
O the one with pride! Be ready for the battle, mounting on your chariot.
Saying this, lord viShNu roared in the loud voice of a lion.
