    Lesson 101 - pauNDraka killed
vaishampAyana uvAcha
tataH sharaM samAdAya vAsudevaH pratApavAn |
pauNDraM jaghAna sahasA nishitena shareNa ha ||3-101-1
vaishampAyana said:
(O janamejaya!) Then the splendorous vAsudeva ( kR^iShNa) took up an arrow. He forcefully shot the sharp arrow at pauNDraka.
pauNDro.atha vAsudevastu sharairdashabhirAshugaiH |
vAsudevaM jaghAnAshu vArShNeyaM vR^iShNinandanam ||3-101-2
pauNDraka vAsudeva shot ten fast moving arrows at vAsudeva (kR^iShNa), vArShNeya, the son of vR^iShNi.
dArukaM pa~nchaviMshatyA hayAndashabhireva cha |
saptatyA vAsudevaM tu yAdavaM vAsudevakaH ||3-101-3
pauNDraka shot twenty-five arrows at dAruka and ten arrows at the horses. (pauNDraka) vAsudeva shot seventy arrows at the yAdava (kR^iShNa).
tataH prahasya suchiraM keshavaH keshisUdanaH |
dhR^iShTo.asAviti manasA saMpUjya yadunandanaH ||3-101-4
Then keshava, (kR^iShNa), the slayer of keshi laughed for some time. The son of yadu (kR^iShNa) mentally honoured pauNDRaka thinking: I have seen his skill.
AkR^iShya shAr~NgaM balavAnsaMdhAya ripusUdanaH |
nArAchena sutIkShNena dhvajaM chichCheda keshavaH ||3-101-5
Then powerful kR^iShNa pulled out his bow shAr~Nga. The slayer of enemies, keshava (kR^iShNa) shot a highly sharp arrow and cut off pauNDraka's flagstaff.
sAratheshcha shiraH kAyAdAhR^itya yadunandanaH |
ashvAMshcha chaturo hatvA chaturbhiH sAyakottamaiH ||3-101-6
The son of yadu (kR^iShNa) separated the head of the charioteer from his body. By shooting four best arrows, he killed all the four horses.
rathaM rAj~naH samAhatya tadobhau pArShNisArathI |
chakraM cha tilashaH kR^itvA hasankiMchidiva sthitaH ||3-101-7
kR^iShNa destroyed the king's chariot and killed both the charioteers on the backside. kR^iShNa powdered the wheel of the chariot like sesame seeds and stood laughing.
pauNDrako vAsudevastu rathAdutplutya satvaraH |
AdAya nishitaM khaDgaM prAhiNotkeshavAya saH ||3-101-8
pauNDraka vAsudeva quickly jumped out of the chariot. He took a sharp sword and threw it at keshava (kR^iShNa).
Sa khaDgaM shatadhA kR^itvA tUShNImAsIchcha keshavaH |
tataH paraM mahAghoraM parighaM kAlasaMmitam ||3-101-9
gR^ihItvA vAsudevAya vAsudevaM pratApavAn |
prAhiNodvR^iShNivIrAya sarvakShatrasya pashyataH ||3-101-10
Breaking the sword into hundred pieces, keshava (kR^iShNa) stood without saying anything (silent). Immediately, the splendorous pauNDraka vAsudeva took up the most terrible iron bludgeon (parigha), terrible like the god of death and threw at the valiant vR^iShNi (kR^iShNa) as all the kShatriya-s were watching.
tadvidhaM jagatAM nAthashchakAra yadunandanaH |
The lord of the universe, the son of yadu, kR^iShNa cut it into two pieces.
tatashchakraM mahAghoraM sahasrAraM mahAprabham ||3-101-11
triMshadbhArasamAyuktamAyasAsyamamitrahA |
AdAyAtha mahArAja keshavaM vAkyamabravIt ||3-101-12
Then the killer of enemies (pauNDraka), took up his highly terrible and highly splendorous chakra, having one thousand spokes, made of iron having thirty weight, and O great king (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued), spoke to keshava (kR^iShNa) the following words.
pashyedaM nishitaM ghoraM tava chakravinAshanam |
anena tava govinda darpaM darpavatAM vara ||3-101-13
apaneShyAmi vArShNeya sarvakShatrasya pashyataH |
Look at this sharp and terrible chakra, the destroyer of your chakra. With this chakra, O govinda! The best among the proud! O the one of the race of vR^iShNi-s, I will destroy your pride as all the kShatriya-s are watching.
tvAmuddishya mahAghoraM kR^itamanyaddurAsadam ||3-101-14
yadi shakto hare kR^iShNa dArayedaM mahAspadam |
This highly terrible chakra, difficult to conquer by others, is made to destroy you. O hari! kR^iShNa, if you are capable, then cut this powerful chakra immediately.
ityuktvA tachChataguNaM bhrAmayitvA mahAbalaH ||3-101-15
chikShepAtha mahAvIryaH pauNDrako nR^ipasattamaH |
Saying this, the highly powerful pauNDraka whirled the chakra hundred times. Then the best among kings, the highly valiant pauNDraka threw the chakra.
avaplutya tato deshAttadutsR^ijya mahAbalaH ||3-101-16
siMhanAdaM mahAghoraM vyanadadvIryavAMstadA |
Then highly powerful kR^iShNa leaped from his place, avoided the chakra and the valiant roared in the highly terrible voice of lion.
tato vismayamApanno bhagavAndevakIsutaH ||3-101-17
aho vIryamaho dhairyamasya pauNDrasya duHsaham |
Then lord kR^iShNa, the son of devaki was struck by wonder. O! What a valiance! What an unbearable courage pauNDraka has!
iti matvA jagannAtha utthitashcha rathottamAt ||3-101-18
tataH shilAM samAdAya preShayAmAsa keshavam |
Knowing as such, the lord of the universe, kR^iShNa jumped out from the best chariot. Then pauNDraka took up a rock and threw it at keshava (kR^iShNa).
tAM shilAM preShayAmAsa tasmai yadukulodvahaH ||3-101-19
Then the one who nourishes the race of yadu, kR^iShNa, redirected that rock towards pauNDraka.
pauNDreNa suchiraM kAlaM vikrIDya bhagavAnhariH |
tatashchakraM samAdAya nishitaM raktabhojanam ||3-101-20
Lord hari (kR^iShna) played with pauNDraka for a long time. Then he took up his sharp chakra, which consumes blood,
daityamAMsapradigdhA~NgaM nArIgarbhavimochanam |
shAtakumbhamayaM ghoraM daityadAnavanAshanam ||3-101-21
which is wet by the blood of the sons of diti, which destroys the pregnancy of the women (of the sons of diti), made of pots of gold, terrible, the destroyer of the sons of diti and danu,
sahasrAraM shatAraM tadadbhutaM daityabhIShaNam |
aishvaryavarma paramaM nityaM suragaNArchitam ||3-101-22
having thousand and one hundred spokes, the highly wonderful chakra, terrible to the sons of danu, the focus of prosperity, always worshipped by the groups of deva-s.
viShNuH kR^iShNastathA shAr~NgI nityayuktaH sadA hariH |
jaghAna tena govindaH pauNDrakaM nR^ipasattamam ||3-101-23
viShNu, kR^iShNa, the holder of the bow shAr~Nga, always yoked with yoga, hari, govinda, killed pauNDraka, the best among the kings, with that chakra.
tasya dehaM vidAryAshu chakraM pishitabhojanam |
kR^iShNasyAtha karaM bhUyaH prApa sarveshvarasya ha ||3-101-24
That chakra which consumes flesh, tore pauNDraka's body and again returned to the hand of kR^iShNa, the lord of all beings.
tataH sa pauNDrako rAjA gatAsuH prApatadbhuvi |
Immediately king pauNDraka fell down dead on the earth.
nihatya bhagavAnviShNurdurvij~neyagatiH prabhuH |
pratipede sudharmAM tu yAdavaiH pUjito hariH ||3-101-25
Killing pauNDraka, lord viShNu (kR^iShNa), the lord hari, whose path is difficult to understand, entered the assembly hall sudharma, worshipped by yAdava-s.
