tataH kruddho.atha durvAsA dakShanniva tayorasUn |
ekenAkSNAtha durvAsA raudreNAgniyujA sadA ||3-109-1
vaishampAyana said:
(O janamejaya!) Then durvAsa became angry. sage durvAsa looked at both
of them (haMsa and Dimbhaka) with one eye having terrible fire always,
as if to burn their life forces.
pashyaMstau cha durAtmAnau roShavyAkulitendriyaH |
kurvanniva tadA lokAnbhasmabhUtAnimAnnR^ipa ||3-109-2
O king! (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued) His senses were tormented by
anger. He was looking at both the wicked souls, angrily, as though to reduce
the entire world to ashes.
brAhmaNaM chakshuShA pashyansaumyenAnyena kevalam |
uvAcha vachanaM rAjandhvaMsata dhvaMsateti cha ||3-109-3
At the same time, the sage was looking at the brAhmin (janArdana) with his
other gentle eye. O king, (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued) sage durvAsa
spoke the words, "run away! run away!"
ito gachChata rAjAnau kiM vilambata mA chiram |
na vAM vachanasaMbhUtaM roShaM dhArayituM kShame ||3-109-4
(durvAsa said) O kings! Go away from this place! Why are you delaying?
Do not delay! I am unable to bear patiently, the anger generated by
hearing your words.
anyathA vo mahIpAlAnsarvAndagdhumahaM kShamaH |
kimataH sAhasaM vaktuM kashcha shaknoti matpuraH ||3-109-5
Go away! Otherwise, I am capable of burning all the kings.
Who is powerful enough to speak so defiantly standing in
front of me?
darpaM vA lokavikhyAtaH sha~NkhachakragadAdharaH |
vyapaneShyati mandaj~nau kiM vo vakShyAmi sAMpratam ||3-109-6
Your pride will be destroyed by the one who holds the conch,
chakra and the mace (kR^iShNa). O kings with slow (inferior) intellect! What
shall I tell both you now?
tata utthAya dharmAtmA gantumaichChadyatIshvaraH |
tato niSheddhuM haMsastaM yatate sma yatIshvaraM |||3-109-7
(O janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued) Saying this,
the one with the soul of dharma, the lord of sages (durvAsa),
desiring to go, got up from there. Then haMsa tried to stop the lord of
sages (durvAsa ).
tasya bAhuM samAdAya hamso nR^ipavarottamaH |
kaupInaM chichChede krUraH kR^itAnta iva sattama ||3-109-8
haMsa, the best among the best kings, caught his (durvAsA's) hands.
O the best of kings! (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued) The cruel
king (haMsa) cut off the sage's loin cloth, as if he was death personified.
yathayo.anye palAyanti disho dasha vichetasaH |
kaShTaM heti vadanvipro mitrabhAvAjjanArdanaH ||3-109-9
The other sages, lost their minds ( became depressed) and ran in all the
ten directions. The brAhmin janArdana said, "Alas!", because of his
friendship (with haMsa and Dimbhaka).
nyavArayadyathAshakti kimidaM sAhasaM tviti |
Asking "Why is this cruelty?" he tried to stop according to his ability.
durvAsAH satyadharmastu hantumIsho.api taM tataH ||3-109-10
mandaM mandamuvAchedaM haMsaM Dimbhakameva cha |
sage durvAsa, having the soul of truth and dharma, even though he was capable
of killing them, spoke to haMsa and Dimbhaka slowly.
shApenAhaM samartho.api hantuM rAjakulAdhamau ||3-109-11
tathApi na karomyantaM yatayo hyatra te vayam |
(durvAsa said:) O vile kings! Even though I am capable of even killing you,
I am not cursing you. I am not destroying you either, because,
whatever it is, we are sages.
yo hi devo jagannAthaH keshavo yAdaveshvaraH ||3-109-12
sha~NkhachakragadApANirgarvaM vAM vyapaneShyati |
That lord, the lord of the universe, keshava (kR^iShNa),
the lord of yAdava-s, the one who holds conch, chakra and mace in his hands,
will destroy your pride.
loke tasminyadushreShThaM rakShatyevaM jagatpatau ||3-109-13
yuvayoH sarvathA jIvaH sajjIva iti me matiH |
In the world, protected by the best of the yAdava-s, the lord of the universe
(kR^iShNa), by all means, your lives are good. This is my opinion.
jarAsandho.api vAM bandhuH sa cha vaktuM na chechChati ||3-109-14
IdR^ishaM lokavidviShTaM sa hi dharmapathe sadA |
Your kin, jarAsandha, will also not speak words like these, hating the people.
He (jarAsandha) always stays on the path of dharma.
etAvatA sa vAM bandhurna hi bhUyo bhaviShyati ||3-109-15
vidveSho hyastu vAM tasya mAgadhasya mahIpateH |
Till now, he is your kin. He will not be so in future. Let the king of
magadha hate you.
shrutvedaM ghorarUpaM tu sa hi bandhuH saheta chet ||3-109-16
dharmanAsho bhavettasya nAtra kAryA vichAraNA |
On hearing this terrible news, if he bears, then his dharma will be destroyed.
There is nothing else to be thought on this.
ityuktvA gachCha gachCheti haMsaM prAha punaH punaH ||3-109-17
(vaishampAyana continued: O janamejaya!) Saying this,
sage durvAsA told haMsa, "go away! go away!" again and again.
janArdanamuvAchedaM durvAsA yatisattamaH |
svastyastu tava viprendra bhaktirastu janArdane ||3-109-18
durvAsa, the best among the sages, told janArdana: O the best among
brAhmins! Let there be good to you. You will have devotion on lord
janArdana (kR^iShNa).
sa~Ngatistava tasyAstu sha~NkhachakragadAbhR^itaH |
adya shvo vA parashvo vA sAdhureva sadA bhavAn ||3-109-19
You will meet the lord who holds the conch, chakra and mace, either today,
tomorrow or the day after. You are always a good person.
na hi sAdhorvinAsho.asti lokayorubhayorapi |
gachCha sarvaM piturbrUhi j~nAtvA vR^ittaM yathAkhilam ||3-109-20
There can not be any destruction of a good person in either of the worlds.
Go and inform your father all that has happened here as you know.
