vaishampAyana uvAcha
tatastau haMsaDimbhakau kruddhau kAlena choditau |
shikyaM kamaNDaluM chaiva dvidalam dArumeva cha ||3-110-1
daMDAnpAtravisheShAMshcha ChittvA bhittvA cha sarvashaH |
vaishampAyana said:
(O janamejaya! ) Then haMsa and Dimbhaka, prompted by Time, became angry and
broke and split all the swings carrying pots, water pots as well as wooden
eating vessels in the shape of the cows' ear
(see nIlakaNTha commentary), wooden staffs as well as other important items
such as sAlagrAma (see nIlakaNTha commentary).
tasmindeshe mahArAja vyAdhairmAMsAnyadIdahan ||3-110-2
bhakShayitvA tato deshAtsvapurIM tau prajagmatuH |
O great king! (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued) They (haMsa and Dimbhaka)
made hunters cook meat in that place (inhabited by the sages). After
eating the meat, they left the place and went to their city.
janArdanashcha dharmAtmA snehAdanuyayau tayoH ||3-110-3
naShTAvimAviti tadA sa mene duHkhitaH param |
janArdana, having the soul of dharma, due to affection,
followed both of them. He had great sorrow considering that they are destroyed.
gateShu teShu sarveShu durvAsA yatisattamaH ||3-110-4
palAyanaparAnsarvAnidaM prAha yatIshvarAn |
After all of them (haMsa, Dimbhaka and janArdana) left, durvAsa,
the best among those who have restrained their passions and abandoned the
material world, told those lords of the sages who were preparing to run away:
ito deshAdvinirgatya puShkarAtpuNyasaMyutAt ||3-110-5
mandaM mandaM samAshvasya vishramya cha tatastataH |
(durvAsa said) Let us leave from this place, puShkara, having merit
and proceed very slowly, consoling ourselves and taking rest at various
places.
pravishya dvArakAM devaM sha~NkhachakragadAdharaM ||3-110-6
dR^iShTvA cha tasmai prabhave vakShyAmo yatisattamAH |
O the best among those who have restrained their passions and abandoned the
material world! Let us go to the city of doors (dvAraka)
and meet the lord who holds the conch, chakra and mace (kR^iShNa) and inform
the lord (about our status).
sa hi rakSha~njagadidaM dharmavartmani saMsthitaH ||3-110-7
He is the one who protects this universe, staying in the path of dharma.
Adyo lokagururviShNuryatAtmA tattvavitpriyaH |
uddhR^itya kaNTakAnsarvA~nChashAsa pR^ithivImimAm ||3-110-8
viShNu, the first one, the preceptor of the world, the one who has restrained
his passions and abandoned the material world, the one who is dear to those
who understand all the principles is governing this earth by removing all the
wicked.
sa cha pApAnmahAghorAnsarvAnpApakR^itAnprabhuH |
rakShennaH sakalAnsarvA~nj~nAneShu niyatAtmanaH ||3-110-9
The lord viShNu will protect all those who are fixed in the path of knowledge,
from all highly terrible sins as well as all those who commit sins.
idamadya kShamaM viprA yAnamadya vidhIyatAm |
sAhasaM yatkR^itaM tAbhyAM pAtrabhedAdi sattamAH ||3-110-10
etatsarvamasheShena darshayAma janArdanam |
O brahmins! At this time, this is the most appropriate action for us.
Let us start right now. O the best of the good! Let us show all the destruction
done by those such as breaking of vessels, without leaving anything,
to janArdana (kR^iShNa).
tatheti te pratij~nAya yatayo j~nAnachakShuShaH ||3-110-11
(vaishampAyana continued: O janamejaya!) Those who have restrained their
passions and abandoned this material world said: Let it be so.
ChinnaM tAbhyAM samAdAya shikyaM dArumayaM tathA |
dvidalaM karpaTaM chaiva kaupInamatha valkalam ||3-110-12
Taking up the broken swings carrying pots as well as wooden eating vessels
in the shape of the cows'ear (see nIlakaNTha commentary),
ochre clothes, the torn loin clothes as well as the barks of wood
(used as dresses),
kamaNDaluM tathA rAjannardhaprotakapAlakam |
etAnanyAnsamAdAya draShTuM keshavamAyayuH ||3-110-13
and (broken) water pots, O king, (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued)
as well as the half broken water pots -
these as well as other (broken items), the sages proceeded to
(the city of doors) to see keshava (kR^iShNa).
pa~ncha chaiva sahasrANi puraskR^itya mahamunIn |
durvAsasaM tapoyonimIshvarasyAtmasaMbhavam ||3-110-14
There were five thousand great sages with sage durvAsa, the source of
penance, the lord who was born from the soul of the great lord, shiva.
ahorAtreNa te sarve dvArakAM kR^iShNapAlitAm |
yayurdAntA mahAtmAno lomashAH keshavarjitAH ||3-110-15
Within one day and night, all those great souls, those distressed
(sages), having their heads devoid of hair (shaven heads)
and their body having hair, reached the city of doors
(dvAraka) protected by kR^iShNa.
prAtaH pravishya rAjendra vApikAyAM yatIshvarAH |
snAtvopaspR^ishya te sarve yatnena mahatA tadA ||3-110-16
O the indra of kings! (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued)
The lords who have restrained their passions entered the lake in the morning,
took bath and performed their morning rituals with attention.
draShTumabhyudyatA viShNuM kaNTakoddhR^ititatparam |
ekarUpaM samAsthAya sudharmAyAmavasthitam ||3-110-17
They prepared themselves to see viShNu, who is interested in destroying the
wicked souls, who was seated in the assembly hall sudharma,
taking up the one form (of kR^iShNa).
