    Lesson 112 kR^iShNa vows to kill hamsa and Dimbhaka, also the feeding of the sages
vaishampAyana uvAcha
yatervachanamAkarNya mandamuchChvasya keshavaH |
durvAsasaM samAlokya babhAShe yAdaveshvaraH ||3-112-1
vaishampAyana said:
(O janamejaya!) Hearing the words spoken by the one who has restrained his passions and abandoned the material world (durvAsa), keshava (kR^iShNa) sighed slowly. The lord of yAdava-s (kR^iShNa) looked at durvAsa and said:
kShantavyaM bhavatA sarvaM doSha eva mamaiva hi |
shR^iNu vAkyaM mamaitattu shrutvA shAntiparo bhava ||3-112-2
You shall pardon for all that happened. This is only my mistake. Please hear my words. After hearing my words, please be calm.
jeShyAmi tau raNe vipra haMsaM Dimbhakameva cha |
girIsho vA varaM dadyachChakro vA dhanado.api vA ||3-112-3
yamo vA varuNo vApi brahmA vAtha chaturmukhaH |
O Brahmin! I shall conquer haMsa and Dimbhaka in battle even if the lord of the mountain (shiva) or shakra (indra) or the lord of wealth (kubera), or yama (god of death) or varuNa (lord of water) or brahma with four faces have given boons to them.
sabalau sAnujau hatvA punardAsyAmi vo ratim ||3-112-4
satyenaiva shapAmyadya mA roShavashago bhava |
I shall kill them along with their armies and relatives and make you comfortable. I have taken a vow by truth now. Do not be angry.
rakShAM vo.ahaM kariShyAmi hatvA tau cha nR^ipAdhamau ||3-112-5
I shall protect you by killing those vile kings (haMsa and Dimbhaka).
jAnAmi tau durAtmAnau yuShmaddoShakarau hi tau |
shrutaM cha pUrvamasmAbhistIkShNadaNDadharAviti ||3-112-6
I know that both those wicked souls have harmed you. Earlier I have heard that they punish severely.
atyantabalinau mattau girIshavaradarpitau |
nAlpaprayatnasaMsAdhyau jarAsaMdhahitaiShiNau ||3-112-7
They are highly powerful and they are intoxicated by the boon given by the lord of the mountain (shiva). They can not be overcome by small efforts. Both of them wish for the benefit of jarAsaMdha.
prANAnapi tayo rAjA dAsyatyeva na saMshayaH |
jarAsaMdho mahIpAlo vinA tau jayate mahIm ||3-112-8
king jarAsaMdha will give up his life for them without any doubt. Without them, king jarAsaMdha will not be able to conquer the earth.
jaye tayorvipravarya tatra shreyo bhavettataH |
yatra yatra tu tau gatvA sthitAvityanushushruma ||3-112-9
tatra tatra cha hantAhaM nAtra kAryA vichAraNA |
O the best among brahmins! If they are conquered prosperity can be achieved. Wherever they are stationed, I shall go there and kill them. There is nothing else to be thought on this.
gachChadhvaM yatayaH svairaM nijakAryaparAyaNAH ||3-112-10
You may go as you please wherever you like and engage in your own work.
achireNaiva kAlena jeShyAmi raNapu~Ngavau |
tataH prItaH prasannAtmA yAdaveshvaramAha saH ||3-112-11
Without any delay I shall conquer those valiant kings who are experts in battle. Hearing this, sage durvAsa became pleased. With a pleasant soul, the sage told the lord of yAdava-s (kR^iShNa):
svastyastu bhavate kR^iShNa jagatAM svasti kurvate |
kinnu nAma jagannAtha duHsAdhyaM tava keshava ||3-112-12
O kR^iShNa! Let there be good to you who does good to the three worlds. O the lord of the universe! O keshava (kR^iShNa) What is there which is impossible for you?
trilokesha tridhAmAsi sarvasaMhArakArakaH |
devAnAmapi devesha sarvatra samadarshanaH ||3-112-13
O the lord of the three worlds! You have three residences. You are the destroyer of all. You are the Lord of gods. You consider all equally.
viShno deva hare kR^iShNa namaste chakrapANaye |
namaH svabhAvashuddhAya shuddhAya niyatAya cha ||3-112-14
O viShNu! O lord! O hari! O kR^iShNa! I bow to you! O the one who holds the chakra! I bow to the one having pure habits I bow to the pure one! I bow to the controlled one!
shabdagochara devesha namaste bhaktavatsala |
aj~nAnAdatha vA j~nAnAdyanmayoktaM kShamasva tat ||3-112-15
O the Lord of gods! You are the ultimate meaning of the words of Vedas. O one who is affectionate to the devotees! I bow to you. Pardon me whatever I said due to ignorance or knowledge.
tvamevAhaM jagannAtha nAvayorantaraM pR^ithak |
ataH kShamasva bhagavankShamAsArA hi sAdhavaH ||3-112-16
O the lord of the universe! I am your form only. There is no difference between us. O lord! Please pardon me since good people pardon always.
shrIbhagavAnuvAcha
kShantavyaM bhavatA vipra kShamAsArA vayaM tadA |
saMnyAsinaH kShamAsArAH kShamA teShAM paraM balam ||3-112-17
The auspicious lord said:
O Brahmin! Please pardon. We always pardon. The sages always pardon and patience is their highest strength.
kShamA mokShakarI nityaM tattvaj~nAnamiva dvija |
kShamA dharmaH kShamA satyaM kShamA dAnaM kShamA yashaH ||3-112-18
O twice born! Patience will always provide liberation, like the knowledge of the ultimate. Patience is dharma. Patience is truth. Patience is the act of giving. Patience is fame.
kShamA svargasya sopAnamiti vedavido viduH |
tasmAtsarvaprayatnena kShamAM pAlayata svakAm ||3-112-19
Those who are experts in Vedas say that patience is the stepping stone of heaven. Hence take all efforts to maintain patience that you have.
pratyakShaj~nAnasaMyuktA yUyaM sarve yatIshvarAH |
ya ete yatayo viprAH pUjanIyA mayAdya vai ||3-112-20
All of you, the sages lords, who have restrained passions and abandoned the world have real knowledge. All of you, the lord sages and the brahmins deserve to be worshipped by me.
bhoktavyA yatayo viprA bhikShukAH sarva eva hi |
All those who have restrained their passions and abandoned the material world, brahmins and those asking for food shall be provided with food.
tatheti te pratij~nAya bhoktumaichChanharergR^ihe ||3-112-21
(vaishampAyana continued: O janamejaya!) Saying "let it be so", they expressed their desire to eat at the residence of hari (kR^iShNa).
tataH svabhavanaM viShNuH pravishya harirIshvaraH |
chaturvidhaM tathAhAraM kArayitvA yathAvidhi ||3-112-22
Then the lord viShNu, hari (kR^iShNa) entered his residence. He made arrangements to prepare food of four types in the prescribed manner.
bhojayAmAsa tAnsarvAnyatInyativarArchitaH |
The one who is worshipped by those who have restrained their passions and abandoned the world provided food to all the lord sages.
ChitvA ChitvA cha devesho dukUlAni mR^idUni saH ||3-112-23
dadau tebhyastadA viShNuH sarvebhyo janamejaya |
O janamejaya! (vaishampAyana continued) The Lord of gods, viShNu (kR^iShNa) cut pieces of soft cloth and gave to all of them.
te cha prItA yathAyogaM yathApUrvaM tato gatAH ||3-112-24
All of them became pleased and returned from there to their original places.
iti shrImahAbhArate khileShu harivaMshe bhaviShyaparvaNi haMsaDimbhakopAkhyAne yatibhojane dvAdashAdhikashatatamo.adhyAyaH
