Lesson 113 hamsa and Dimbhaka send the messenger

durvAsAstvatha tatraiva nAradena mahAtmanA |
chintayanbrahmaNastattvaM vijahAra yathAsukham ||3-113-1

(O janamejaya!) Sage durvAsa stayed there itself with the great soul nArada, meditating on the principle of brahma and remained there comfortably.

tatastau haMsaDimbhakau tasminkAle mahIpatim ||3-113-2
brahmadattaM mahIpAlaM pitaraM vIryashAlinam |
prAvochatAmidaM vAkyaM samantAjjanasaMsadi ||3-113-3

At this time, haMsa and Dimbhaka met their father, the lord of earth, the highly valiant king brahmadatta and spoke the following words at the assembly of people.

rAjasUyaM mahAyaj~naM pitaH kuru suyatnataH |
asminmAsi nR^ipashreShTha yatAvo yaj~nasiddhaye ||3-113-4

(haMsa and Dimbhaka said)
O Father! Please perform the great sacrifice, the royal sacrifice, with attention. Perform the sacrifice during this month, O the best of kings! Let us prepare for accomplishing the sacrifice.

AvAM te.adya mahArAja dishAM vijayatatparau |
yatiShyAvo balaiH sArdhaM gajairashvai rathairapi ||3-113-5

O great king! We are now ready for conquering all the directions. We shall make all efforts for the same along with our army, elephants, horses as well as chariots.

O the best among kings! Let us bring all the materials for accomplishing the sacrifice.

vaishampAyana continued:
O the one with great arms! (O janamejaya), Then king brahmadatta said: Let it be so.

janArdanastu viprendro dR^iShTvA sAhasatatparau |
ashakyamiti manvAno vayasyaM haMsamabravIt ||3-113-7

The best among brahmins, janArdana, understanding that they were interested in doing the rash deed which was impossible, told his friend haMsa:

shR^iNu haMsa vacho mahyaM shrutvA nishchitya vIryavAn |
AyuShmAnsAhasaM kartumudyato.asi nR^ipottama ||3-113-8

O haMsa! O valiant! Hear my words. Decide after hearing my words. O the one with long life! O the best among kings! You are attempting to do a rash act.

sthite bhIShme jarAsaMdhe bAhlike cha nR^ipottame |
kiM cha vIreShu sarveShu yAdaveShu nR^ipottama ||3-113-9

O the best among kings! The best among the kings, bhIShma, jarAsaMdha and bAhlika as well as all the valiant yAdava-s are alive now.

triHsaptakR^itvaH pR^ithivIM yo jigAya bhR^igUttamaH ||3-113-10
taM yuddhe jitavAnbhIShmaH sarvakShatrasya pashyataH |

The best among the bhR^igu-s (parashurAma) conquered the earth three times seven (twenty-one) times. bhIShma conquered him in battle as all the kShatriya-s were watching.

vR^iShNivIrAstu te sarve kR^itAstrA yuddhadurmadAH |
tatra kR^iSHNo hR^iShIkesho jitashatruH kR^itI sadA ||3-113-12

All the valiant vR^iShNi-s are expert in archery and are proud in the battle. Among them is kR^iShNa, the lord of senses, the conqueror of enemies, always the accomplished one.

jarAsandhena sahitaH sadA yuddhe jitashramaH |
pramukhe tasya na sthAtuM shakto jIvannR^ipottamaH ||3-113-13

kR^iShNa always has won the battle with jarAsaMdha with his efforts. The best among the kings will not be able to stand and live in front of kR^iShNa.

balabhadrastathA mattaH kruddho yadi bhavedbalI |
lokAnimAnsamAhartuM shaknotIti matirmama ||3-113-14

My intellect (mind) says that, if the powerful balabhadra, who is always excited, becomes angry, he will be able to conquer all the worlds.

tathA cha sAtyakirvIraH shakto jetuM raNe ripUn |
tathAnye yAdavAH sarve kR^iShNamAshritya daMshitaH ||3-113-15

In the same way, the valiant sAtyaki will conquer the enemies in the battle. All the other valiant yAdava-s who depend on kR^iShNa are ready for the battle.

asmAbhishcha kR^itaH pUrvaM virodho yatibhiH saha |
durvAsA yatibhiH sArdhaM gato draShTuM sa keshavam ||3-113-16

Before this we have acted against the sages who have controlled their senses and abandoned the material world. Sage durvAsa, along with sages has gone to see keshava (kR^iShNa).

iti shrutaM nR^ipashreShTha brAhmanAdbhoktumAgatAt |
tathA sati yathA siddhyettathA chintyaM cha mantribhiH ||3-113-17

O the best among kings! I have heard thus from brahmins who came to have food. If it is so, then this should be discussed with your ministers.

After the discussion, you may perform the great sacrifice, the royal sacrifice.

Who is the one named bhIShma, having a retarded soul, an old man, who is always weak?

AvayoH purataH sthAtuM shaktaH sa kila vR^iddhakaH |
yAdavA iti chitraM naH shaktAH sthAtuM raNe dvija ||3-113-19

Will that old man be capable of standing in front of (opposing) us? O brahmin (janArdana)! It is strange (impossible) that the yAdava-s will be able to oppose us in the battle.

kashcha kR^iShNaH puraH sthAtuM baladevashcha mattakaH |
shaineyashchApi viprendra sthAtuM na iti chintaya ||3-113-20

Who is kR^iShNa to stand in front of (oppose) us? Who is the intoxicated baladeva(rAma) to oppose us? O the indra of brahmins (janArdana)! Consider that even the son of shini (sAtyaki) will not be able to oppose us.

jarAsaMdhastu dharmAtmA bandhureva sadA mama |
gachCha vipra yadushreShThaM brUhi madvachanAttvaran ||3-113-21

jarAsaMdha, the king with the soul of dharma, is always my friend. O Brahmin (janArdana)! Go and tell the best of the race of yAdava-s (kR^iShNa) my words immediately:

dIyatAM karasarvasvaM yaj~nArthaM sundaraM bahu |
lavaNAni bahUnyadya gR^ihya keshava mA chiram ||3-113-22

"You shall pay many beautiful tributes for the (royal) sacrifice. You shall also bring lot of salt. O keshava (kR^iShNa), do not delay.

AgachCha tvaritaM kR^iShNa na te kAryaM vilambanam |
iti brUhi yadushreShThaM yAhi tvaritavikramaH ||3-113-23

kR^iShNa! You shall quickly come over. Do not delay your visit." You, go quickly and say this to the best among the yAdava-s (kR^iShNa)

na brUyAshchottaraM vipra shapeyaM tvAM priyo.asi me |
mitrabhAvAdidaM brUhi pashyAmi tvAM punaH punaH ||3-113-24

Do not say anything in reply to me , O Brahmin! Otherwise I may curse you. You are my friend. Due to our friendship you shall talk like this. I am looking at you again and again for this.

iti sa~nchodito vipro nottaraM pratyabhAShata |
mitrabhAvAttathA rAjansnehAchcha janamejaya ||3-113-25

(vaishampAyana continued) O King! O janamejaya! The Brahmin janArdana who was thus prompted by haMsa did not answer him due to his friendship and affection.

janArdanastu dharmAtmA nityaM gantuM samudyataH |
adya shvo vA parashvo vA gachChAmIti yateta saH ||3-113-26

janArdana whose soul was fixed in dharma always, began preparations for going to meet kR^ishNa. He started his preparations thinking that he will go today, tomorrow or day after.

devaM draShTuM jagadyoniM sha~NkhachakragadAdharam |
eka eva cha dharmAtmA hayamAruhya satvaram ||3-113-27

janArdana, whose soul was fixed in dharma, all by himself, mounted a fast moving horse, to see the lord, the source of the universe, the lord who holds the conch, chakra and the mace.

prAtareva jagAmAshu draShTuM dvAravatIM dvijaH |
hariM kR^iShNaM hR^iShIkeshaM manasA saMsmarandvijaH ||3-113-28

The twice born (Brahmin), janArdana, got up early in the morning to see the city of doors (dvAravati). The twice born (brahmin), janArdana meditated on hari, kR^iShNa, the lord of senses in his mind.
