vaishampAyana uvAcha
tataH prAyAddhariM viShNuM brAhmaNo brahmavittamaH |
hayenaikena rAjendra tvaritaM sa yayau nR^ipa ||3-114-1
vaishampAyana said:
O indra among kings! (janamejaya!) Then the brahmin, janAradana, best among those who are knowledgeable about brahma, started his journey, thinking about hari, viShNu (kR^iShNa), O king, mounted on a fast moving horse.
yathA nidAghasamaye sUryAMshuparipIDitaH |
pAntho yAti jalaM dR^iShTvA tvaritaM tatpipAsayA ||3-114-2
Like a traveler, tormented by the hot rays of sun in the summer, who moves fast prompted by thirst on seeing water, he proceeded quickly.
dhAvatyeva tathA vipro hariM draShTuM janArdanaH |
gachChansa chintayAmAsa chodayanhayamuttamam ||3-114-3
The brahmin janArdana moved fast, as if he was running, to see hari (vishNu, kR^iShNa). As he was riding fast mounted on the best among horses, he thought as follows:
haMsa eva priyo mahyaM kuryAtpriyahitaM mama |
tathA hi preShitastena hariM pashyAmyahaM prabhum ||3-114-4
haMsa is dearest to me. He will do what is most liked by me. That is how, myself, a messenger sent by him, am able to see the lord viShNu (kR^iShNa).
ahameva sadA dhanyo matto hyabhyadhiko na hi |
yato drakShyAmyahaM viShNuM vasantaM dvArakApure ||3-114-5
Indeed I am the most blessed always. There is none who is more blessed than me. I will be able to see vishNu who is residing in the city of doors (dvAraka).
sA hi me jananI dhanyA hariM dR^iShTvA punargatam |
kR^itArthaM sarvadA devI drakShatyeShA manasvinI ||3-114-6
My mother is also blessed, since, she having a kind mind, will see me, who has come back, after seeing hari (viShNu, kR^iShNa) accomplishing what is to be done.
mukhamunnidrahemAbjaki~njalkasadR^ishaprabham |
drakShyAmi devadevasya chakriNaH shAr~NgadhanvanaH ||3-114-7
I shall see the face of the Lord of gods, who holds the chakra and the bow shAr~Nga, which is splendorous and beautiful as the fully blossomed lotus flower.
vapurdrakShyAmyahaM viShNornIlotpaladalachChaviH |
shA~NkhachakragadAshAr~NgavanamAlAvibhUShitam ||3-114-8
I shall see the body of viShNu having the splendor of the petals of the blue lotus flower, which is decorated by the conch, chakra, mace, the bow shAr~Nga and the garland of wild flowers.
netre te devadevsya padmaki~njalkasaprabhe |
pashyAmyahamadInAtmA naShTaduHkho.asmi nirvR^itaH ||3-114-9
I, having a distressed soul, shall see the eyes of the Lord of gods, splendorous as the petals of the lotus flower. Then my sorrow will vanish and I shall achieve the ultimate satisfaction.
api drakShyati yogAtmA saumyenaiva svachakShuShA |
api vA matpriyaM brUyAtsvasti cheti cha vA vadet ||3-114-10
Will the lord with his soul yoked with yoga not look at me gently with his own eyes? Will He not say what I like? Will He not wish good to me?
drakShyAmi chakriNo varShma tatastrailokyasannibham |
pAdAbjaM chakriNo draShTuM tvaratyeva cha me manaH ||3-114-11
I shall see the body of the lord who holds chakra, splendorous as the three worlds. My mind is most anxious to see the feet of the lord who holds chakra, beautiful and auspicious as the lotus flower.
vakShaHsthalaM sadA viShNoH sphuradratnaprabhAyutam |
pashyanniva cha gachChAmi smaraMshchAnishamIshvaram ||3-114-12
I shall see the chest of viShNu, (kR^iShNa) decorated with splendorous jewels. I am going (to dvAraka), always thinking about the lord.
pItakausheyavasanaM lambahAravibhUShitam |
IShatsmitAdharaM viShNuM pashyAmi cha punaH punaH ||3-114-13
I will see again and again lord viShNu (kR^iShNa) wearing yellow silk clothes and decorated with a garland of pearls and a slight smile on His lips.
smaratashcha hare rUpaM romaharSho.ayamIdR^ishaH |
gachChatashcha puro bhAti shA~NkhachakragadAsimAn ||3-114-14
I am excited like this with hairs standing up all over my body when I think about the form of viShNu (kR^iShNa). As I go further, I see the form of viShNu, holding conch, chakra, mace and the sword in front of me.
yAtIva cha puro bhAti mahyaM devo jagadguruH |
eSho.ayamiti me vaktuM jihvA prasphuratIva taM ||3-114-15
In front of me is the Lord of gods, the preceptor of the universe, lord viShNu (kR^iShNa) as if He is going before me. My tongue is almost moving to say that He is here.
idaM duHkhataraM manye karaM dehIti madvachaH |
idaM tatsAhasaM manye tadvachastasya bhUpateH ||3-114-16
I consider myself most distressed to say, "give tribute" to lord viShNu. Those words spoken by the king (haMsa) are definitely reckless.
haMsasya karado viShNustadAj~nAparichArakaH |
tasya sarvam puro gatvA vaktAhaM kila nirdayaH ||3-114-17
viShNu (kR^iShNa) shall pay tribute to haMsa - I should speak all these in front of viShNu (kR^iShNa) as a servant who obeys his (king haMsa) order.
mUDhAnAmagraNIrasmi nirlajjashcha tathA vadan |
karaM dehi hare viShNo haMsasya yadupu~Ngava ||3-114-18
I am the foremost among the stupid and shameless to speak thus: "O hari! O viShNu (kR^iShNa)! O the foremost among yAdava-s! Pay tribute to haMsa.
lavaNAni bahUnyAshu dAtavyAni karAtmanA |
iti vaktuM na me yuktaM puratastasya shAr~NgiNaH ||3-114-19
You shall also offer lot of salt as tribute". It is not appropriate for me to speak thus in front of the lord who holds the bow, shAr~Nga.
tathApi mitrabhAvAttu vaktavyaM ghoramIdR^isham |
kaShTo hyayaM mitrabhAvo manuShyANAM kR^itAtmanAm ||3-114-20
Even then I have to say such terrible things due to my friendship (with haMsa and Dimbhaka). Such friendship is highly unfortunate for those men having a satisfied mind.
atha vA sarvavidviShNuH sarvasya hR^idi saMsthitam |
jAnAtyeva sadA bhAvaM prANinAM shobhane rataH ||3-114-21
Otherwise, viShNu (kR^iShNa) who knows all, who is installed in the hearts (minds) of all, who is interested in the well being of all beings always, will know these feelings always.
tathA sati na me doSho mitrabhAvo yato hyayam |
sarvathA rakShatAM viShNurghoraM vaktuM yatasya me ||3-114-22
In that case there is no harm for me since I have friendship (with haMsa and Dimbhaka ). Let viShNu (kR^iShNa) protect me always, who intends to say terrible things.
drakShyAmyahaM jagannAthaM nIlaku~nchitamUrdhajam |
kambugrIvadharaM viShNuM srIvatsAchChAditorasam ||3-114-23
I will see the lord of the universe, viShNu (kR^iShNa) who is having dark blue hair, having an auspicious neck decorated with bracelets, whose chest sparkles with the auspicious mark of srIvatsa.
sphuratpadmamahAbAhuM ratnachChAyAvirAjitam |
drakShyAmi keshavaM viShNuM chakriNaM yAdaveshvaram ||3-114-24
I will see keshava, viShNu whose great arms are decorated with lotus flowers, who is decorated with jewels. The lord who holds chakra, the lord of the yAdava-s.
achintyavibhavaM devaM bhUtabhavyabhavatprabhuM |
AtmechChayA jagadrakShaM drakShyAmi jalashAyinam ||3-114-25
I will see lord viShNu, who have many items which can not be described. I shall see the lord of the past, present and future, who protects the world by his own will, who lies in water (the milky ocean).
kR^itArthaH sarvathA chAhaM bhavAmi vigatajvaraH |
adya me saphalaM janma sAkShAddR^iShTavato harim ||3-114-26
By all means I will become the one who has done what is to be done, the one whose sorrows have disappeared. Today my life has become fruitful, since I shall see hari (viShNu, kR^iShNa) in person.
adya me saphalA yaj~nAH sAkShAtkR^itavato hariM |
netre me saphale viShNuM pashyatashcha jaganmayam ||3-114-27
Today my efforts are fruitful because I shall see hari (viShNu, kR^iShNa) in person. My eyes have become fruitful by seeing the lord of the universe.
prItimAnastu me viShNurvakturghorasya karmaNaH |
unmiShannetrayugmena drakShyAmi sakR^idIshvaram ||3-114-28
May viShNu become pleased with me, even though I am doing terrible acts. I shall see the auspicious lord with both my eyes, keeping them wide open.
AmUlamasakR^idviShNuM pashyAmi cha punaH punaH |
pibAmi netrayugmena vapuH kR^iShNasya kevalam ||3-114-29
I shall see auspicious viShNu from toe to head again and again. I shall simply drink the body of kR^iShNa with both my eyes.
dhArayiShyAmyahaM pAMsuM tatpAdaprabhavaM shivam |
tataH kR^itArthatAM yAsye svargamArgo hi tadrajaH ||3-114-30
I shall wear the auspicious dust from his feet and then become one who has accomplished what is to be done . That dust is considered as the path to heaven.
meghagambhIranirghoShaM shroShyAmi cha hareH svaram |
pAdAbjaM chakriNo viShNoH pashyAmi cha jagatpateH ||3-114-31
I shall hear the voice of hari which is deep as the thunder of a cloud. I shall see the feet of the holder of chakra, viShNu (kR^iShNa), the lord of the world, which is as beautiful as the lotus of creation.
pashyAmi cha harervaktraM pUrNendusadR^ishaprabham |
hareridaM jagadrUpaM pashyAmIva cha sarvataH ||3-114-32
I shall see the face of hari (viShNu, kR^iShNa) splendorous like the full moon. I am seeing the universal form of hari (viShNu, kR^iShNa) everywhere.
prasIdatu sadA viShNurayuktaM vaktumichChataH |
Let viShNu (kR^iShNa) be pleased with me always, who wants to say inappropriate words.

sphuratkeyUraratnArchirbAhudvayavirAjitam |
savye dyotanmahAsha~NkhaM rashmijAlavirAjitam ||3-114-34
prodyadbhAskaravarNabhaM chakrajvAlAvirAjitam |
projjvalatka~NkaNayutaM taptajambUnadA~Ngadam ||3-114-35
pItakausheyavasanaM vistIrNoraskamachyutaM |
kadA drakShyAmi deveshamidANImatha vAnyadA ||3-114-36
When shall I see the Lord of lords, the lord who does not have a fall, lord viShNu (kR^iShNa), now or some other time, wearing the swinging ear rings, smeared with the auspicious sandalwood paste, along with two arms sparkling with bracelets and jewels, holding the great conch in his left hand, sparkling with the group of rays, holding the chakra which dazzles with the splendor of the rising sun, wearing the bangles and golden bracelets, wearing yellow silk clothes, having a wide and beautiful chest?
sarvathA kR^itakR^ityo.ahaM yadvapurdraShTumudyataH |
namo mahyaM namo mahyaM yato draShTumahaM harim ||3-114-37
udyato.asmi jagannAthaM balabhadrakR^itAspadam |
By all means, I am the one who has done what is to be done, since I am making efforts to see the lord's auspicious body. I bow to me, I bow to me. I am ready to see the lord hari (viShNu, kR^iShNa), the lord of the universe (kR^iShNa) along with balabhadra(rAma).
drakShyAmyavashyamadyaiva jiShNuM viShNuM jagadgurum ||3-114-38
Today, I shall see definitely, jiShNu, viShNu, the preceptor of the universe (kR^iShNa).
    shrIkaustubhodbhavaruchiM sphuritoruvakShaH
        pItAmabaraM makarakuNDalapa~NkajAkSham |
    kR^iShNaM kirITavarachakragadordhvahastaM
        tejomayaM mama harervapurastu bhUtyai ||3-114-39
Let the auspicious, splendorous body of hari (viShNu, kR^iShNa), having a wide chest sparkling with the splendor of the auspicious kaustubha, wearing yellow clothes, with the ear rings shaped like crocodiles and having beautiful eyes as the lotus of creation, the body of kR^iShNa, wearing the crown, with the hands holding chakra and the mace provide prosperity to me.
    vedodadhau vishadashAstramahAhiyoge
        niShNAtashuddhamatimandaramathyamAne |
    udyotamAnamamarairanishaM niShevyaM
        nArAyaNAkhyamamR^itaM prapibAmi vAdya ||3-114-40
When the ocean of veda is churned by the mandara mountain of the pure intellect, bound by the serpent of the great religious treatises (shAstra-s) the nectar of narAyaNa rose up which was drunk by the immortals. Today I shall drink that nectar.
    dhyeyaM mumukShubhirameyamanAdyanantaM
        sthUlaM susUkShmataramekamanekamAdyam |
    jyotistrilokajanakaM tridashaikavandya-
        makShNormamAstu satatam hR^idaye.achyutAkhya ||3-114-41
The great splendor meditated by those seeking liberation, that can not be measured, that do not have neither the beginning nor the end, that which is huge as well as minute, that which is the only one as well as many, that which was evolved first - Let that splendor named as the lord who does not have a fall, be visible to my eyes and established in my heart.
chintayanniti viprendro yayau dvAravatIM purIm |
matvA kR^itArthamAtmanAM vAhayanhayamuttamam ||3-114-42
Thinking thus, the indra of brahmins (janArdana) went to the city of doors (dvAraka). Realising that he has become the one who has accomplished what is to be done, he rode on the best among horses.
