ityuktavati haMse cha dharmAtmAtha janArdanaH |
uvAcha prahasanvIraH stuvannArAyaNaM sadA ||3-118-1
vaishampAyana said:
(O janamejaya!) When haMsa said so, the valiant janArdana, having the soul of dharma who always praises nArAyaNa (viShNu, kR^iShNa) said smilingly:
    adrAkShamadrAkShamahaM janArdanaM
        hastasthasha~NkhaM varachakradhAriNam |
    AtaptajAmbUnadabhUShitA~NgadaM
        sphuratprabhAdyotitaratnadhAriNam ||3-118-2
(janArdana said) I saw janArdana (kR^iShNa) again and again, with the conch in his hands and holding the best chakra, decorated by bracelets of pure gold and wearing splendorous sparkling jewels.
    adrAkShamenaM yadubhiH purAtanaiH
        samsevyamAnaM munivR^indamukhyaiH |
    saMstuyamAnaM prabhubhiH samAgadhaiH
        smitapravAlAdharapallavAruNam ||3-118-3
I saw the ancient lord who is served by prominent sages along with those of the race of yadu (yAdava-s), who is praised by the bards. The lord had smiling red youthful lips, beautiful as corals.
    adrAkShamenaM kavibhiH purAtanai-
        rvivichya vedyaM vidhivatsahAmaraiH |
    praphullanIlotpalashobhitaM shriyA
        vinidrahemAbjavirAjitodaram ||3-118-4
I saw the lord who is distinguished and known by ancient poets along with the immortals in the prescribed manner, the lord having the splendor of a fully blossomed blue lotus of prosperity, the lord having the eternal golden lotus of creation sprouting from his belly.
    bhUyo.ahamadrAkShamajaM jagadguruM
        pramodayantaM vachanena yAdavAn |
    nirUpayantaM vidhivanmunIshvaraiH
        pravR^ittavedArthavidhiM purAtanaiH ||3-118-5
Again I saw the lord who is unborn, the preceptor of the universe, who makes the yAdava-s happy with his words, who explains the meaning of vedas in the prescribed manner along with the ancient sages.
    adrAkShamadrAkShamahaM punaH punaH
        samastalokaikahitaiShiNaM hariM |
    vasantamasmi~njagato hitAya
        jaganmayaM tAnparibhUya shatrUn ||3-118-6
Again and again I saw the lord hari who is interested in the welfare of all the worlds, the one who resides for the welfare of the universe, providing the same by conquering the enemies (of the welfare of universe).
    bhUyo.apyapashyaM saha yAdaveshvarai-
        rvikrIDyamAnaM cha vihArakAle |
    ramantamIDyam ramayantamIshvarA-
        nyadUttamAnyAdavamukhyamIshvaram ||3-118-7
Again I saw the lord who was playing along with the prominent yAdava-s at the time of leisure. I saw the lord who was enjoying. I saw the best among yAdava-s (kR^iShNa) who was entertaining others.
    bhUyo.apyapashyaM sarasIruhekShaNaM
        sametayA bhIShmatanUjayA harim |
    vasantamambhonidhishAyinaM vibhuM
        bhaktapriyaM bhaktajanAspadaM shivam ||3-118-8
Again I saw the lord hari (viShNu, kR^iShNa) having the eyes as beautiful as the lotus of creation providing prosperity to the devotees, along with the daughter of king bhIShmka (rugmiNi). I saw the auspicious lord viShNu (kR^iShNa), lying in the (milk) ocean, to whom devotees are dear, on whom the devotees depend.
    adrAkShadrAkShamahaM sunirvR^itaH
        pibanpibaMstasya vapuH purAtanam |
    netreNa mIladvivareNa kevalaM
        dhanyo.ahamasmIti tadA vyachintayam ||3-118-9
I again and again saw the lord. I drank his ancient body with my wide open eyes again and again with utmost satisfaction. At that time, I thought that I am the most blessed.
    adrAkShamambhojayugaM dadhAnaM
        prabhuM vibhuM bhUtamayaM vibhAvanam |
    AdyaM kakudmAnamuruM vibhAvasuM
        saMsmR^itya saMshR^itaya tameva nirvR^itaH ||3-118-10
I saw the lord, the lord manifesting everywhere, the lord of beings, the lord interested in the welfare of all beings, lord viShNu (kR^iShNa) holding two lotus flowers. Remembering and depending on lord viShNu (kR^iShNa), the great lord, the lord who sparkles, I am utmost satisfied.
adrAkShaM jagatAmIshaM vakShorAjitakaustubham |
vIjyamAnaM hariM kR^iShNaM chAmarANAM shataiH sadA ||3-118-11
I saw the lord of the universe, the lord viShNu, wearing the jewel kaustubha on his chest. I saw lord hari, kR^iShNa always being fanned by hundreds of chowries.
yuvAm vidveShayuktena chetasA yAdaveshvaram |
smarantam sarvadA viShNuM kva chaivaM kva cha vetti kaH ||3-118-12
The lord of yAdava-s (kR^iShNa), remembers both of you with hatred in his mind. Where and who will know viShNu in this way?
kva cha drakShyAmi tau mandau kR^ito vA matpurogatau |
dhyAyantamitthaM deveshaM kare shatruvahaM sadA ||3-118-13
I saw the lord of gods, holding the conch in his hands, who was thinking: Where can I see those two with slow intellect ? When will they come in front of me?
hasantamenamadrAkShaM karadaM hAsyatatparam |
vadantaM nArade vAcham durvAsasi yatIshvare ||3-118-14
I saw the lord (kR^iShNa, viShNu) who was laughing. I saw the lord (kR^iShNa, viShNu) who can pay tributes. I saw the lord (kR^iShNa, viShNu) interested in humor, who was speaking with nArada and sage durvAsa, the lord of those who have restrained their passions and abandoned the material world.
brahmasUtrapadAM vANIM dApayantaM munIshvaram |
dR^iShTAhaM taM hariM devaM punaH punarachintayam ||3-118-15
I saw the lord in conversation with the lord of sages who was pronouncing the meaning of the words of vedas. Seeing lord hari (viShNu, kRIShNa) I thought again and again that,
asAdhyamidamArabdhaM tAbhyAmiti nR^ipottama |
nArabdhavyamidam kAryamitaH prabhR^iti bhUmipa ||3-118-16
O the best among the kings (O haMsa)! You have initiated an impossible task. O the lord of earth! You should not proceed further with this matter.
nivR^ittA sA kathA haMsAchintayadgrahaNaM tava |
tadvR^ittAmakhilaM sarvaM vadishyati hi sAtyakiH |
O haMsa! The episode of your collection of tribute has finished. All the incidents will be explained in detail by sAtyaki.
etadvachanamAkarNya haMsaH kruddho.abravIdvachaH ||3-118-17
Hearing these words (spoken by janArdana), haMsa became angry and spoke the following words.
haMsa uvAcha
are brAhmaNadAyAda kA nAma tava vAgiyam |
AvayoH purato vaktuM trailokyam jetumichChatoH ||3-118-18
haMsa said:
You the son of Brahmin! What are you talking? How dare you speak these words in front of us who are trying to conquer the three worlds?
mAyayA tvAM bhrAmayati kR^iShNo lIlAvidhAnavit |
taM dR^iShTvA bhrama evaiSha tava sa~njAyate mahAn ||3-118-19
kR^iShNa, expert in organizing a play, is confusing you with illusion. After seeing kR^iShNa, you have become highly confused.
sha~NkhachakragadAshAr~NgavanamAlAvibhUShitam |
vR^iShNivIraM samAveshya samuchChritayashodharam ||3-118-20
After seeing kR^iShNa who holds the conch, chakra, mace and the bow shAr~Nga and decorated with the garland of wild flowers, the valiant among the vR^iShNi-s, the one having a high fame,
sUtamAgadhasaMstAvaprakaTadvArabAhukam |
atyadbhutayashorAshiM vikramAllokamaNDanam ||3-118-21
the one who was praised by the bards and the poets and led the passage from the entrance, the one who has the most wonderful fame, the one who is respected by the world due to his valiance,
chaturbhujaM balAkrAntaM vR^iShNiyAdavasaMmatam |
aho.adya bhrama evaiSha darshanAttasya chakriNaH ||3-118-22
the one having four highly powerful arms, the one who is dear to those of the yAdava and vR^iShNi races, alas!, after seeing the one who holds a chakra, now you are only confused.
idAnIM cha mahArAja bhrAmayatyeva durmatiH |
tvAmeva vipra mandAtmannindrajAlikatA hi yA ||3-118-23
O great lord! That one with a wicked intellect is confusing you even now, O Brahmin! O the one with a slow intellect, with his act of magic.
chApalyamidamevaitattava vipra bhramodbhavam
aho hi khalu sAdR^ishyaM vaktavyaM bhavatA mama ||3-118-24
O Brahmin! Your confusion is definitely childish. Alas! You should have talked about our similarity.
ahameva tvayA vipra marshaye proditaM vachaH |
sakhibhAvAddvijashreShTha anyathA kaH sahedidam ||3-118-25
O Brahmin! I shall excuse the words spoken by you, O the best among the twice born, due to our friendship. Otherwise who will tolerate words like these?
gachcha mandamate vipra yatheShTaM sAMprataM tava |
dvija gachCha yatheShTaM tvaM pR^ithivIM pR^ithivI tava ||3-118-26
O the one with slow intellect! O brahmin! O twice born! You may go as you like. The entire earth is open to you. You may go wherever you like on this earth.
jitvA gopAladAyAdaM hatvA yAdavakAnbahUn |
eSha naH prathamaH kalpo jeShyAma iti yAdavAn ||3-118-27
After conquering the son of the cowherd and killing many yAdava-s, I shall conquer yAdava-s. This my foremost resolution.
gachCha gachCheti vipra tvaM dhR^iShTaM paruShavAdinam |
shatrupakShastutiparaM saha yuktvA sadA mayA ||3-118-28
Brahmin! Go away! Go away! You are audacious and you speak roughly. I should abandon those who always praise the enemy's side.
na me vipravadhaH kAryaH kaShTAdapi hi sarvataH |
ityuktvA brAhmaNaM bhUyo haMsaH sAtyakimabravIt ||3-118-29
Even if I am distressed all over, I shall never kill a brahmin. (vaishampAyana continued: O janamejaya!) Speaking thus to the brahmin, haMsa again spoke to sAtyaki:
bho bho yAdavadAyAda kimarthaM prAptavAniha |
kimabravInnandasutaH kiM vAsau me.adishatkaram ||3-118-30
O the son of yAdava! For what purpose have you come here? What did the son of nanda (kR^iShNa) say? Did he pay tribute to me?
sAtyakiruvAcha
idam satyaM vacho haMsa sha~NkhachakragadAbhR^itaH |
sAtyaki said:
O haMsa! These are the true words of the one who holds the conch, chakra and the mace:
shanairnishitadhArAgraiH shAr~NgamuktaiH shilAshitaiH ||3-118-31 dAsyAmi karasarvasvamasinA nishitena te |
I shall pay all the tributes to you with the arrows having tips sharpened by the grind stone and released from the bow shAr~Nga and with sharp swords.
shirashChetsyAmi te haMsa karadAnasya sa~Ngraham ||3-118-32
dhArShTyaM hi tava mandAtmankimato.api nR^ipAdhama |
"O haMsa! I shall cut off your head. O the one with slow intellect! It is definitely your audacity to say that I shall offer tribute to you. O vile king! What is next?"
devadevAjjagannAthAtkaramichChati yo nR^ipaH ||3-118-33
tasyaiSha karasa~NkShepo jihvAchChedo narAdhama |
O vile king! The hand as well as tongue of the king asking tribute from the Lord of gods, the lord of the universe, shall be cut off.
tasya shAr~NgaravaM shrutvA sha~Nkhasya cha hareH punaH ||3-118-34
ko nAma jIvitam kA~NkShettiShThedAnIM tvamadya vai |
After hearing the sound of the twang of the bow shAr~Nga and the conch of hari (kR^iShNa, viShNu) who will stand up to him, who want to live again? (If you think you are powerful) you may.
girIshavaradarpeNa ko brUyAdIdR^ishaM vachaH ||3-118-35
You are saying words like this due to the pride because of the boons given by the lord of the mountain (shiva)

sahAyA vayamevaite balabhadrapurogamAH |
prathamo balabhadro.asau dvitIyo.ahaM cha sAtyakiH ||3-118-36
Also we, lead by balabhadra(rAma) , are there for helping kR^iShNa. The first is balabhadra (rAma), the second is me, sAtyaki,
kR^itavarmA tR^itIyastu chaturtho nishaTho balI |
pa~nchamo.atha cha babhrustu ShaShTashchaivotkalaH smR^itaH ||3-118-37
the third is kR^itavarma, the fourth is the powerful nishaTha, the fifth is babhru, the sixth is the famous utkala,
saptamastAraNo dhImAnastrashastravishAradaH
aShTamastvatha sAra~Ngo navamo vipR^ithustathA ||3-118-38
the seventh is tAraNa, the one with intellect and the expert in archery, the eighth is sAra~Nga and the ninth is vipR^ithu,
dashamashchoddhavo dhImAnvayamete balAnvitAH |
the tenth is uddhava, the one with intellect. All of us are powerful.
ta ete purato goptuH sha~NkhachakragadabhR^itaH ||3-118-39
devadevasya yuddheShu tiShThantyeva divAnisham |
We shall stand day and night in front of the lord, the one who holds the conch, chakra and mace, the lord of gods (kR^iShNa, viShNu), in the battle field.
yau hi vIrau sutau tasya nAsatyasadR^ishau bale ||3-118-40
Those two valiant sons of vasudeva are equal to nAsatya-s (the twin ashvini deva-s) in power.
tAveva vAM kShamau yuddhe hantuM balamadAnvitau |
yo girIsho girA devo varaM dattvA sa tiShThati ||3-118-41
They alone are sufficient to kill you who are proud with power, in battle while the lord of the mountain, shiva, who gave you the boon by words, is standing aside.
yuvAM hi kimbalau yuddhe tiShThataH sasharaM dhanuH |
gR^ihItvA shatrubhiH sArdhaM yuddhaM kartuM samudyatau ||3-118-42
With what power are you standing in the battle field, holding the bow and arrows, trying to engage your enemies in the battle?
IdR^isheShvatha bhR^ityeShu yuddhaM kurvatsu shatrubhiH |
trailokyaM rakShatastasmAtkaramichChanvrajeta kaH ||3-118-43
As servants like us fight with the enemies in the battle field, who can demand tribute from the lord who protects the three worlds?
haniShyatyeva vAM yuddhe trailokyaM yo hi rakShati|
shareNa nishitenAjau shAr~Ngamuktena kevalam ||3-118-44
The lord who protects the three worlds will kill you in the battle, simply with the sharp arrows released from the bow shAr~Nga.
kva na sa~NgrAma ityevaM punarAha jagatpatiH |
puShkare punyade nityamuta govardhane girau ||3-118-45
The lord of the universe asked again: Where is the location of our battle - at the holy place of puShkara or the eternal mountain of govardhana?
mathurAyAM prayAge vA darshayanto balAni me |
Will you show your army (power) at mathura or prayAga?
sha~Nkhachakradhare deve jagatpAlanatatpare ||3-118-46
rAjasUyaM mahAyaj~naM kartumichChati kaH svayam |
Who want to perform the great royal sacrifice (rAjasUya) while the lord holding the conch and chakra is interested in the welfare of the world?
vadanvA svastimAnmartyastvAM vinA ko vrajetsukham ||3-118-47
Or else is there some one who can go home comfortably after speaking thus?
idamichChasi chenmUDha hAsyatAM yAsi bhUtale |
ityuktvA sAtyakirvIro hasanniva bhuvi sthitaH ||3-118-48
O fool! If you wish to do this, you will become a laughing stock on the face of earth. Saying this, the valiant sAtyaki stood on the face of earth, laughing.
