tataH kruddho mahArAja haMso Dimbhaka eva cha |
idaM vai prochaturvAkyaM roShavyAkulitekShaNau ||3-119-1
vaishampAyana said:
O great king! (O janamejaya!) Immediately haMsa and Dimbhaka became angry. With their eyes distressed by anger, they spoke these words,
didhakShantau dishAH sarvAH sarvAnvIkShya nR^ipottamAn |
kareNa niShpIDya karaM smarantau tadvacho mahat ||3-119-2
as though burning all directions with anger, looking at all the best of the kings, squeezing their hands with hands, and remembering the great words (of sAtyaki):
kva nu kva vA nandasUnuH kva vA rAmo balotkaTaH |
iti bruvANau sAkShepau sAtyakiM satyasa~Ngaram ||3-119-3
Where is the son of nanda (kR^iShNa)? Where is (bala)rAma having high power? Saying this with abuse, they spoke to sAtyaki, the one who fights battle in the true way.
are yAdavadAyAda kiM brUShe naH purogataH |
ito nirgachcha mandAtmandUtastvamasi sAMpratam ||3-119-4
O the son of yAdava! What did you speak in front of us? O the one with a dumb soul! Leave this place. Now you are a messenger.
anyathA vadhya eva tvaM pralapanparuShaM vachaH |
satyaM nirlajja evAsi yadbrUyA IdR^ishaM vachaH ||3-119-5
Otherwise, speaking rough words like these, you definitely deserve to be killed. Indeed you are shameless to speak such words.
AvAmidaM jagatsarvaM shAsituM saMyatau nR^ipau |
ko nAma mAnuShe loke karado naiva jIvati ||3-119-6
We are kings, who are ready to protect the entire universe. Who will live in the human world, without paying tribute (to us)?
hatvA gopAlakAnsarvAnbaddhvA yAdavakAnbahUn |
gR^ihNImaH karasarvasvaM tato gachCha narAdhama ||3-119-7
Killing all the cowherds and tying up many of the yAdava-s, I shall take away all tributes. O vile man! Go away.
avadhyo dUtatAM prApto bahvabaddhaM prabhAShase |
Ishvaro nau varaM dAtA hyastrANAmapi cha prabhuH ||3-119-8
The one who came as a messenger can not be killed. You are speaking many wrong things. The lord (shiva) has given us boons and the lord has provided many arrows as well.
rakShitArau mahAbhUtau sa~NgrAmaM gachChatoshcha nau |
pitaraM yAjayiShyAvo jitvA gopAlakaM raNe ||3-119-9
There are great bhUta-s to protect us when we go to the battle field. Killing the cowherds in the battle, we shall make our father perform the (royal) sacrifice (rAjasUya).
ete proktA bhR^ishaM yuddhe kAtarAH sarva eva te |
hatvA tAnsabalAnyuddhe punarjeShyAmi keshavam ||3-119-10
Those who spoke thus are highly afraid of battle. After killing all those along with their armies in the battle, I shall conquer keshava (kR^iShNa).
saMhartavyA mahAsenA pragR^ihItasharAsanA |
gR^ihItaprAsamushalA gR^ihItakavachA sadA ||3-119-11
Let us assemble the great army and take up the great bow. Taking up weapons such as barbed missiles (prAsa) and clubs(mushala) and always the shields,
ArUDharathasAhasrA gadAparighasa~NkulA |
suprabhUtendhanavatI prabhUtabalasAdhanA ||3-119-12
mounting on thousands of chariots along with many maces, iron bludgeons (parigha) and taking up lots of wood as well as other items for the battle,
chAlyatAM vAhinI ghorA balAdhyakShA samantataH |
avadhya eva gachCha tvaM na te maraNato bhayam ||3-119-13
let us organize a terrible army along with commanders all over. (Being a messenger) you can not be killed. Hence you may go. You need not be afraid of death.
sa~NgrAmaH puShkare.asmAkaM shvaH parashvo.api vA nR^ipa |
tato j~nAsyAmahe vIryam keshavasya balasya cha |
We shall have the battle at puShkara either tomorrow or the day after, O king! Then we shall know about the valiance of keshava (kR^iShNa) as well as balarAma.
ye tvayoktA nR^ipAH sa~Nkhye teShAmapi cha yadbalam ||3-119-14
You spoke about the (yAdava) kings and their power.
sAtyakiruvAcha
haMsAgachChAmi vAM hantuM shvaH parashvo.api vA nR^ipa |
adyaiva hi mayA vadhyau na cheddUto bhavAmyaham ||3-119-15
sAtyaki said:
haMsa! I am leaving. I shall kill you O king, either tomorrow or day after. If I am not a messenger, then you deserve to be killed by me today itself.
nahi shvo vA parashvo vA yuvAm kaTukabhAShiNau |
dautye hi duHkhamatulaM vahAmyeva sadA nR^iNAm ||3-119-16
It will not be postponed for tomorrow or the day after. Both of you are speaking roughly. Today I am suffering the great sorrow that men always have by being messengers.
anyathAhaM yuvAM hatvA tato yAsyAmi nirvR^itim |
svavIryaM bAhudarpaM cha darshayanvAM nR^ipAdhamau ||3-119-17
Otherwise I shall kill you today and be satisfied. O vile kings! I shall show you my valiance as well as the power of my arms.
sha~NkhachakragadApANiH shAr~NgadhanvA kirITabhR^it |
nIlaku~nchitakeshADhyo lambabahuH shriyA vR^itaH ||3-119-18
The one who holds the conch, chakra and mace in his hands, the lord having the bow shAr~Nga and the crown, the lord decorated by dark blue hair, the lord accompanied by the goddess of prosperity,
sa sarvalokaprabhavo vishvarUpaH surUpavAn |
daityadAnavahantAsau yogidhyeyaH purAtanaH ||3-19-19
the lord whose splendor fills the entire world, the lord who manifests his universal form, the lord having an auspicious form, the slayer of the sons of diti and danu, the ancient lord meditated by the sages,
padmaki~njalkanayanaH shyAmalaH siMhavikramaH |
sR^iShTisthitilayeShvekaH kartA trijagato guruH ||3-119-20
the lord having eyes as beautiful as the lotus of creation, the lord having the dark blue colour, the lord having the valiance of a lion, the preceptor of all the three worlds, the creator and the maintainer of the world,
shareNa nishitenAjau darpam vAM vyapaneShyati |
ityuktvA rathamAruhya prayayau sAtyakiH kila ||3-119-21
will destroy your pride with sharp arrows in the battle. (O janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued) saying this, sAtyaki left mounting on a chariot.
