Lesson 123 - vichakra killed

etasminnantare rAjandvandvayuddhamavartata |
vichakraM yodhayAmAsa shAr~NgadhanvA gadAdharaH ||3-123-1

During this time, O king, (janamejaya), one to one battle took place. The lord holding the bow shAr~Nga and mace in his hands (kR^iShNa), fought with vichakra.

balabhadro.atha haMsena Dimbhakena cha sAtyakiH |
vasudevograsenAbhyAM hiDimbaH puruShAdakaH ||3-123-2

balabhadra(rAma) fought with haMsa and sAtyaki fought with Dimbhaka. hiDimba, the man eater fought with vasudeva and ugrasena.

O the indra of kings! (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued) The remaining ones fought with the remaining ones without sorrow.

vAsudevastrisaptatyA daityaM vakShasyatADayat ||3-123-3
sharairnishitadhArAgrairvismayaM darshayanraNe |

vAsudeva (kR^iShNa) shot seventy three arrows having sharp tips at the chest of of the son of diti (vichakra) and showed a wonderful feat in the battle.

dAnavo devadeveshaM dR^iDhena nishitena cha ||3-123-4
shareNAkarNamAkR^iShya dhanuHpravaramIshvaram |
jaghAna stanamadhye cha pashyatastu shachIpate ||3-123-5

The son of danu (vichakra) pulled sharp arrows upto his ear and shot at the middle of the breast of the lord, the lord of gods, who is an expert archer, as the husband of shachI (indra) was watching.

tena viddho.atha bhagavAnvakShodeshe janArdanaH |
avamachChoNitaM viShNurAdikAle yathA prajAH ||3-123-6

The lord janArdana, viShNu, who was shot forcefully at the chest by vichakra, vomited blood, in the same way he had produced the subjects at the beginning of creation.

tataH kruddho hR^iShIkeshaH kShurapreNAhanaddhvajam |
ashvAMshcha chaturo hatvA sArathiM cha sharaistribhiH ||3-123-7

Then the lord of senses ( viShNu, kR^iShNa) became angry and shot off his flag with a kShurapra. The lord killed all the four horses and the charioteer with three arrows.

Then the lord blew his great conch like he blew it during the battle of tArAmaya (battle between gods and demons regarding bR^ihaspati's wife, tArA) long ago.

rathAdutplutya sahasA dAnavaH krodhamUrchChitaH ||3-123-8
gadAM gR^ihya mahAghorAM duHsahAM vIryashAlinIM |
tayA jaghAna daityendraH kirITe keshavasya ha ||3-123-9
lalATe cha punarviShNuM siMhanAdaM vyanInadat |

Then, all of a sudden, the son of danu, with extreme anger, jumped out from his chariot. Taking the highly terrible, highly valiant mace which is difficult to bear in the battle, the indra of the sons of diti, struck at the crown of keshava (kR^iShNa), as well as again on the forehead of viShNu (kR^iShNa) and then roared aloud like a lion.

tataH shilAM cha mahatIM pragR^ihya danujaH kila ||3-123-10
bhrAmayitvA dashaguNaM prAharatkeshavorasi |

Then the son of danu (vichakra) took up a great rock. Whirling the rock hundred times, he released it at the chest of keshava (kR^iShNa).

tAmApatantIM saMprekShya hastenAdAya keshavaH ||3-123-11
jaghAna cha tathA daityaM sa papAtArditaH kShitau |
gatAsuriva samjaj~ne shvasanniva papAta ha ||3-123-12

Seeing it falling down, keshava (kR^iShNa) caught it with his hand and struck the son of diti (vichakra) with the same. Then vichakra was highly distressed and fell down on the face of earth. He fell down, sighing deeply as if his life forces left him.

prApya saMj~nAM tato daityaH kroddhAddviguNamAbabhau |
AdAya parighaM ghoramidamAha janArdanam ||3-123-13

Immediately, the son of diti (vichakra) regained his consciousness and became doubly angry. He took up a highly terrible iron club and told janArdana (kR^iShNa).

anena tava govinda darpajAtaM nihanmyaham |
vikramaj~nastadA chAsi mama devAsure raNe ||3-123-14

(vichakra said) O govinda! (kR^iShNa) I shall destroy all your (valiance) with this club (parigha). You have already seen my valiance during the battle between the gods and demons ( battle of tArAmaya).

tAveva vipulau bAhU sa evAsmi janArdana |
tathApi yudhyase vIra j~nAtvA tvaM mAmakaM balam ||3-123-15

O janArdana (kR^iShNa, viShNu) I am the same one (who fought against the gods) and these are the same (powerful) arms. Even after knowing about my power, O valiant, are you fighting against me?

O the one with great arms (kR^iShNa)! Block this iron club which is released by my (powerful) arms.

ityuktvA devadeveshaM sha~NkhachakragadAdharam |
chikShepa daityo lokeshaM sarvalokasya pashyataH ||3-123-16

(vaishampAyana continued! O janamejaya!) Saying this, the son of diti (vichakra) threw the club at the lord of gods, the one who holds the conch, chakra and the mace (viShNu, kR^iShNa), the lord of the world, as those in all the worlds were watching.

taM gR^ihya bAhunA kR^iShNo hato.asIti vadanhariH |
khaNDashaH kArayAmAsa khaDgena nishitena ha ||3-123-17

kR^ishNa caught the club with his hand saying "you are dead" and cut it into pieces with a sharp sword.

utpATya vR^ikShaM daityeshaH shatashAkhaM mahAshikham |
tena saMpothayAmAsa viShTarashravasaM vibhuM ||3-123-18

The lord of the sons of diti (vichakra) pulled out a giant tree having hundred branches and struck the lord having wide fame (kR^iShNa, viShNu) with the same.

kR^iShNa cut the tree also with his sword and made it into pieces like the seeds of sesame.

vikrIDya suchiraM viShNustena daityena mAdhavaH ||3-123-19
hantumaichChattadA daityamAdAya nishitaM sharam |
AgneyAstreNa saMyojya jaghAnainaM mahAn hariH ||3-123-20

After playing with that son of diti (vichakra) for a long time, viShNu, mAdhava (kR^iShNa) then desired to kill the son of diti. Taking up a sharp arrow and joining it with the arrow of the fire god, the great hari (viShNu, kR^iShNa) shot at vichakra.

saMdahya sa sharo daityaM sarvalokasya pashyataH |
yathA pUrvaM jagAmAshu karaM bhagavataH punaH ||3-123-21

As all the beings of all the worlds were watching, that arrow burned the son of diti (vichakra) and returned to the lord's hand again as before.

hatashiShTAstato daityAH palAyanto disho dasha |
adyApi na nivartante gachChanto vai mahodadhim ||3-123-22

The sons of diti who were left alive ran in all the ten directions and entered the great ocean. (O janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued:) They have not returned till today.
