atha bhIto mahAraudramastraM dR^iShTvA nR^ipottama |
haMso rAjA mahArAja nishcheShTa iva saMbabhau ||3-128-1
vaishampAyana said:
O the best among kings! (janamejaya!) Seeing the highly terrible arrow (vaiShNava), king haMsa, O great king (janamejaya), became as if he was stunned, without any actions.
utplutya sa rathAttasmAdyamunAmabhyadhAvata |
yatra KR^iShNo hR^ShIkeshaH kAliyAhiM mamarda ha ||3-128-2
He jumped out from the chariot and ran towards the river yamuna, where kR^iShNa, the lord of senses, oppressed the serpent kAliya, long ago.
mahAhradaM mahAraudraM yAvatpAtAlasaMsthitam |
tAvaddIrghaM mahAnIlaM kAlA~njananibhaM hi yat ||3-128-3
That great pool was highly terrible, as wide and deep up to the netherworld, having dark blue colour, similar to the colour of black a~njana stone.
tasminhrade mahAghore papAtAtha sa haMsakaH |
haMse patati tasmiMstu mahAnrAvo babhUva ha ||3-128-4
girINAM pAtyamAnAnAM samudra iva vajriNA |
haMsa jumped into that highly terrible pond. As haMsa jumped into the pool, there was a sound, as great as the sound produced when the wielder of vajra (indra) fell the mountains into the sea.
rathAdutplutya kR^iShNo.api tasyopari papAta ha ||3-128-5
devadevo jagannAtho jagadvismApayanniva |
kR^iShNa also jumped out from the chariot and fell on haMsa, as though to surprise the universe.
prAharattaM mahAbAhuH pAdAbhyAmatha keshavaH ||3-128-6
The Lord of gods, the lord of the universe, keshava (kR^iShNa), the one with powerful arms, kicked haMsa with his legs.
pAdakShepaM nR^ipastasmAllabdhvA haMso nR^ipottama |
mamAra cha nR^ipashreShTha kechidevaM vadanti hi ||3-128-7
O the best among kings! (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued) Some say that haMsa was killed, O the best among kings, (janamejaya!) by the kick of legs of kR^iShNa.
anye pAtAlamAyAto bhakShitaH pannagairiti |
adyApi naiva rAjendra dR^iShTa ityanushushruma ||3-128-8
Some others say that haMsa reached the netherworld and was eaten by the serpents. O the indra of kings! ( janamejaya!) We hear that haMsa was not seen as returning from there till today.
yathApUrvaM jagannAtho rathaM samupajagmivAn |
The lord of the universe (kR^iShNa) returned to the chariot as before.
hate tasminmahArAja dharmaputro yudhiShThiraH ||3-128-9
akarodrAjasUyaM cha tava pUrvapitAmahaH |
After haMsa was killed, O great king (O janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued)! Your great grandfather, dharmaputra, yudhiShThira performed rAjasUya (the royal sacrifice).
yadi jIvedasau haMsaH ko namasyati taM kratum ||3-128-10
sa cha sarvAstravinnityaM rudrAllabdhavaraH prabho |
If haMsa was alive, who will bow to that sacrifice? O lord! (janamejaya!) After receiving boons from rudra (shiva), haMsa was always an expert of all arrows.
kShaNAdeva mahArAja vArteyaM gAmagAhata ||3-128-11
O great king! (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued) Within moments this news spread on the earth.
hato haMso hato haMsaH kR^iShNena ripumardinA |
jagurgandharvapatayo devaloke divAnisham ||3-128-12
gandharva-s sang in the world of deva-s day and night: "haMsa was killed! haMsa was killed by the oppressor of enemies, kR^iShNa".
kR^iShNena lokanAthena viShNunA prabhaviShNunA |
yamunAyA hrade ghore haMso nihata ityapi ||3-128-13
"The terrible haMsa was killed in the deep pool of the river yamuna by kR^iShNa, the lord of the world, viShNu, the splendorous viShNu."
