Lesson 129 - Dimbhaka commits suicide

shrutvA nihatamatyugraM bhrAtaraM vIryashAlinam |
baladevaM parityajya yudhyamAnaM mahAraNe ||3-129-1
Dimbhako vIryasaMpanno yumunAmanujagmivAn |

(O janamejaya!) Hearing that his highly terrible, most valiant elder brother was killed in the great battle, Dimbhaka, endowed with valiance, left the battlefield fighting with baladeva(rAma) and went to the river yamuna.

haMso hi yatra patitastatrAsau nipapAta ha |
yamunAyAM mahArAja viloDya jalasa~nchayam ||3-129-3

Dimbhaka jumped into the river yamuna where haMsa had fallen, O great king (janamejaya!vaishampAyana continued), and agitated the entire water.

atha kruddhaH sa Dimbhako bhrAmayitvA jalaM bahu |
unmajyonmajya sahasA nimajya cha punaH punaH ||3-129-4

Then Dimbhaka became angry and agitated the water many times. He went inside the water, rose up, again entered the water and rose up again and again.

na dadarsha tadA rAjanbhrAtaraM vIryashAlinam |
unmajyAtha mahAbAhurvAsudevaM vilokya cha ||3-129-5

O king! (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued) He could not see his highly valiant elder brother there. The one with powerful arms, Dimbhaka, rose up from the water and saw vAsudeva (kR^iShNa).

uvAcha vachanaM rAjanDimbhako vIryavattamaH |
are gopakadAyAda kvAsau haMsa iti sthitaH ||3-129-6

O king! (janamejaya!vaishampAyana continued) Dimbhaka, the best among valiant, spoke these words: You, the son of cowherd! Where is haMsa?

vAsudevo.api dharmAtmA yamunAM pR^ichCha rAjaka |
ityabravItprasannAtmA vAsudevaH pratApavAn ||3-129-7

vAsudeva (kR^iShNa), the one with the soul of dharma, answered: O vile king! You may ask the river yamuna. Thus spoke the one with pleasant soul, the splendorous one, vAsudeva (kR^iShNa).

tachChrutvA yamunAM bhUyaH pravishya DimbhakaH kila |
bahuprakAramudvIkshya bhrAtaraM bhrAtR^ivatsalaH ||3-129-8

Hearing this, Dimbhaka again entered the waters of the river yamuna. Dimbhaka, who is affectionate to his elder brother searched for his brother many times.

vilalApa tato rAjA Dimbhako bhrAntamAnasaH |
kva nu gachChasi rAjendra vihAyainamabAndhavam ||3-129-9

(janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued) Then king Dimbhaka, with his mind confused, cried: O the indra of kings! Where are you going leaving me, without having any relatives?

kuto bhrAtarito gachCheH parityajyaiva mAmiha |
vilapyevaM nR^ipashreShTha Dimbhako bhrAtR^ivatsalaH ||3-129-10

O brother! Where are you going, leaving me here? O the best among kings! (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued): Dimbhaka, affectionate to his brother lamented in this manner.

AtmatyAge manaH kurvanyamunAyA mahAhrade |
nimajyonmajya sahasA maraNe kR^itanishchayaH ||3-129-11

He decided in his mind to abandon his soul in the great pool of the river yamuna. He decided to kill himself immediately by drowning and raising up.

hastena jihvAmAkR^iShya bhUyo bhUyo vilapya cha |
tataH samUlAmAkR^iShya jihvAM sAhasakR^itsvayam ||3-129-12

With his hand, he pulled his tongue and cried again and again. Then he pulled out his tongue with its root, himself, immediately.

O king! (janamejaya!vaishampAyana continued) Dimbhaka died inside the water. This type of death was sure to get hell for him.

evaM tu nihate haMse Dimbhake vIryashAlini ||3-129-13
AgamatpuNDarIkAkSho bhUtAnvismApayanniva |

After the highly valiant haMsa and Dimbhaka were killed thus, the one having eyes as beautiful as the lotus of creation (kR^iShNa), as if to surprise all beings, came back.

Then the splendorous vAsudeva (kR^iShNa), having a pleasant soul, was pleased.

govardhane.atha vishramya balabhadrasahAyavAn |
ki~nchitkAlaM mahArAja pUrvabhuktamuvAsa ha ||3-129-15

kR^iShNa took rest at the govardhana mountain along with balabhadra(rAma). He sat at that place where, long before, they had lived for quite some time.
