    Lesson 131 - kR^iShNa, praised by sages at puShkara, returns to dvAraka
vaishampAyana uvAcha
gachChannatha mahAviShNuH puShkaram prApya yAdavaiH |
apashyanmunimukhyAMstu puShkarasthAnnR^ipottama ||131-1
vaishampAyana said:
O the best among kings! (janamejaya!) As he proceeded (to dvAraka) along with yAdava-s, the great viShNu (kR^iShNa) reached puShkaram and met the prominent sages residing at puShkaram.
te sametya mahAdevamR^iShayo vItamatsarAH |
arghyAdisamudAchAraM kR^itvainaM yAdavottamam ||3-131-2
All the sages together, devoid of any competing spirit, received the great deva (kR^ishna), and offered water etc., to the best among yAdava-s (kR^iShNa) at the respectful reception.
prochurvishveshvaraM viShNuM bhUtabhavyabhavatprabhum |
The sages told the Lord of the worlds, viShNu (kR^iShNa), the lord of the pas, present and future:
atyadbhutamidaM viShNo tava vIryaM janArdana ||3-131-3
yena tau nihatau yuddhe haMso Dimbhaka eva cha |
(The sages said:) O viShNu! O janArdana (kR^iShNa)! Your valiance is most wonderful, in killing haMsa and Dimbhaka in the battle.
yo vichakro durAdharSho devairapi suduHsahaH ||3-131-4
sa~Ngare nihato deva duHsAdhya iti no matiH |
O lord! Killing vichakra, who can not be conquered even by deva-s, in battle was a difficult task to be done. We thought it to be impossible.
kShemo naH sarvakAryeShu charatAM tapa uttamam ||3-131-5
All of us who are performing the best of penance are now at ease.
niShkalmaShA bhaviShyAmastava saMsmaraNAddhare |
tvaM hi sarvasya duHkhasya hartA tvAM dhyAyatAM sadA ||3-131-6
O hari (viShNu, kR^iShNa)! We shall become devoid of all sins by remembering you. You are the destroyer of the sorrows of all those who meditate on you.
tvadanusmaraNaM jantoH sadA puNyapradaM prabho |
tvaM hi naH satataM dhAtA vidhAtA tapaso hareH ||3-131-7
O lord! Remembering you will always be meritorious for beings. O hari! For us, you are always the originator, promoter and the lord who grants the result of penance (See nIlakaNTha commentary).
tvamomkAro vaShaTkArastvaM yaj~nastvaM pitAmahaH |
tvaM jyotirbrahmaNo mUrtistvaM brahmA rudra eva cha ||3-131-8
You are the OmkAra, you are the exclamation uttered by the priest at the end of the sacrificial verse, you are the sacrifice, you are the great grandfather. You are the light appearing in the three worlds, you are the body of brahman. You are brahma as well as rudra.
prANastvaM sarvabhUtAnAmantarAtmeti kathyate |
upAsyaH sarvabhUtAnAM yaj~nairdAnairjagatpate ||3-131-9
You are the life force. You are said to be the inner soul of all beings. O lord of the universe! You are to be worshipped by all beings with sacrifices and offerings.
namo vishvasR^ije deva namaste vishvamUrtaye |
pAhi lokamimaM deva hatvA brahmadviShaH sadA ||3-131-10
We bow to the creator of the world. We bow to the bodily form of the world. O lord! Always protect the world by killing those who hate brahma.
sa tatheti harirviShNuryayau dvAravatIM purIM |
avasadvR^iShNibhiH sArdhaM stUyamAnaH samAgadhaiH ||3-131-11
(O janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued) saying "let it be", hari, viShNu (kR^iShNa) proceeded to the city of doors. He stayed there along with vR^iShNi-s, praised by the bards.
iyaM cha devadevasya cheShTA hi janamejaya |
proktA te pR^ichChate rAjankimanyachChrutamichChasi ||3-131-12
O janamejaya! (vaishampAyana continued) I have described also this deed (killing of vichakra, haMsa and Dimbhaka) of the lord of gods (viShNu, kR^iShNa) to you who asked about it. O king! What else would you like to hear?
