Lesson 34 - Siege of Mathura by Jarasandha
sa kR^iShNastatra sahito rauhiNeyena saMgataH |
mathurAM yAdavAkIrNAM purIM tAM sukhamAvasat |2-34-1
Thereafter, kR^iShNa along with son of rohiNI (balarAma) lived comfortably
in the city of mathurA, full of yAdava-s.
prAptayauvanadehastu yukto rAjashriyA vibhuH |
chachAra mathurAM prItaH sa vanAkarabhUShaNAm ||2-34-2
His youthful body combined with royal splendour, powerful kR^iShNa
traveled through mathurA, surrounded by beautiful forests.
kasyachittvatha kAlasya rAjA rAjagR^iheshavaraH |
shushrAva nihataM kaMsaM duhitR^ibhyAM mahIpatiH ||2-34-3
After some time, the king and lord of rAjagR^iha (jarAsaMdha) heard from his
two daughters that kaMsa was killed.
tato nAtichirAtkAlAjjarAsaMdhaH pratApavAn |
AjagAma ShaDa~Ngena balena mahatA vR^itaH ||2-34-4
Afterwards, without much delay, the powerful jarAsaMdha arrived with his
vast army having six divisions. (Six divisions - elephants, chariots,
cavalry, and infantry plus wares like food and vendors. See nIlakaNTha
jighAMsurhi yadUnkruddhaH kaMsasyApachitiM smaran |
asti prAptishcha nAmnA te mAgadhasya sute nR^ipa ||2-34-5
Thinking about the downfall of kaMsa, he became angry to kill yAdava-s.
O king! the daughters of the king of magadhA (jarAsaMdha) were named as
asti and prApti.
jarAsaMdhasya kalyANyau pInashroNipayodhare |
ubhe kaMsasya te bhArye prAdAdbArhadratho nR^ipaH ||2-34-6
The daughters of jarAsaMdha were beautiful with thin waist and large breasts.
The king, bArhadratha (jarAsaMdha) had given them to kaMsa as wives.
sa tAbhyAM mumude rAjA baddhvA pitaramAhukam |
samAshritya jarAsaMdhamanAdR^itya cha yAdavAn |
shUraseneshvaro rAja yathA te bahushah shrutaH ||2-34-7
The king (kaMsa) enjoyed with them. He imprisoned his father Ahuka
(ugrasena). Depending on jarAsaMdha, he neglected yAdava-s. You have heard
many times about the king shUrasena.
j~nAtikAryArthasiddhyarthamugrasenahite rataH |
vasudevo.abhavannityaM kaMso na mamR^iShe cha tam ||2-34-8
vasudeva, considering the interests of ugrasena, always stood for the
benefit of the relatives. kaMsa did not approve this.
rAmakR^iShNau samAshritya hate kaMse durAtmani |
ugraseno.abhavadrAjA bhojavR^iShNyadhakairvR^itaH ||2-34-9
With the support of rAma and kR^iShNa, as the wicked soul kaMsa was killed,
ugrasena surrounded by bhojas, vR^iShNi-s and andhaka-s became the
duhitR^ibhyAM jarAsaMdhaH priyAbhyAM balavAnnR^ipaH |
nodito vIrapatnIbhyAmupAyAnmathurAM tataH ||2-34-10
prompted by his two dear daughters, who were wives of the valiant (kaMsa),
the powerful jarAsaMdha arrived at mathurA.
kR^itvA sarvaM samudyogaM krodhAdagnisamo jvalan |
Blazing with the fire of anger, jarAsaMdha made all efforts.
pratApAvanatA ye cha jarAsaMdhasya pArthivAH ||2-34-11
mitrANi j~nAtayashchaiva saMyuktAH suhR^idastathA |
tamevAnunayuH sarve sainyaiH samuditairvR^itAH ||2-34-12
jarAsamdha was accompanied by all the kings who were under his power,
friends, relatives and acquaintances along with their armies.
maheShvAsA mahAvIryA jarAsaMdhapriyaiShiNaH |
kArUSho dantavaktrashcha chedirAjashcha vIryavAn ||2-34-13
They were powerful, valiant and great. They did what jarAsaMdha liked.
dantavaktra of kArUSha and the valiant king of chedi,
kAli~NgAdhipatishchaiva pauNDrashcha balinAM varaH |
sA~NkR^itiH keshikashchaiva bhIShmakashcha narAdhipaH ||2-34-14
the ruler of kAli~Nga, paundraka the great among the strong,
the cunning kaushika and the king of men bhIShmaka,
putrashcha bhImakasyApi rukmI mukhyo dhanurbhR^itAm |
vAsudevArjunAbhyAM yaH spardhate sa mahAhave ||2-34-15
also rukmi, the son of bhIShmaka, the foremost of the bowmen, who was
interested in fighting with vAsudeva and arjuna in the great war,
veNudAriH shrutarvA cha krathashchaivAMshumAnapi |
a~NgarAjashcha balavAnva~NgAnAmadhipastathA ||2-34-16
veNudhAri, shrutarvA, kratha, aMshumAn, the powerful a~NgarAja and the
ruler of va~Nga,
kaushalyaH kAshirAjashcha dashArNAdhipatistathA |
sukheshvarashcha vikrAnto videhAdhipatistathA ||2-34-17
kaushalya, the king of kAshi, the ruler of dashArNa, sukheshvara,
the valiant ruler of videha,
madrarAjashcha balavAMstrigartAnAmatheshvaraH |
shAlvarAjashcha vikrAnto daradashcha mahAbalaH ||2-34-18
the king of mAdra, the powerful ruler of trigartas, the king shAlva,
the valiant and powerful darada,
yavanAdhipatishchaiva bhagadattashcha vIryavAn |
sauvIrarAjaH shaibyashcha pANDyashcha balinAM varaH ||2-34-19
the ruler of yavana, the valiant bhagadatta, the king of sauvIra, shaibya,
the great among powerful pANDya,
gAndhArarAjaH subalo nagnajichcha mahAbalaH |
kAshmIrarAjo gonardo daradAdhipatirnR^ipaH |
duryodhanAdayashchaiva dhArtarAShTrA mahAbalAH ||2-34-20
subala, the king of gAndhAra, the powerful nagnajit, gonarda the king of
kAshmIr, the ruler of darada, the powerful sons of dhR^itarAShtra starting
ete chAnye cha rAjAno balavanto mahArathAH |
tamanvayurjarAsaMdhaM vidviShanto janArdanam ||2-34-21
and many other powerful and great kings opposing janArdana (kR^iShNa)
te shUrasenAnAvishya prabhUtayavasendhanAn |
UShuH samrudhya mathurAM puraskR^itya balaM tadA ||2-34-22
Reaching the city of shUrasena, well equipped with enough grass and fuel,
keeping the armies
in front, they surrounded mathurA.
iti shrImahAbhArate khileShu harivaMshe viShNuparvaNi
Thus this is the thirty-fourth lesson of viShNuparva of harivaMsha,
khila of shrimahAbhArata, siege of mathura by jarAsaMdha.
This shloka is almost the same as shloka 2-33-1 with sahito
