    Lesson 123 - jvara defeated, gets a boon
vaishampAyana uvAcha
mR^itamityabivij~nAya jvaraM shatruniShUdanaH |
kR^iShNo bhujabalAbhyAM tu chikShepAtha mahItale ||2-123-1
vaishampAyana said:
(O janamejaya!) Thinking that it is dead, the slayer of enemies, kR^iShNa, threw away jvara, with his hands, on to the ground.
muktamAtraH sa bAhubhyAM kR^iShNadehaM vivesha ha |
amuktvA vigrahaM tasya kR^iShNasyApratimaujasaH ||2-123-2
As he was released from the hands of kR^iShNa, jvara (fever) entered the body of kR^iShNa. jvara did not leave the body of kR^iShNa having incomparable splendor.
sa hyAviShTastathA tena jvareNApratimaujasA |
kR^iShNaH skhalanniva muhuH kShitau gADhaM vyavartata ||2-123-3
As he was possessed by jvara (fever) having incomparable splendor, kR^iShNa faltered again while standing fixed on the ground.
jR^imbhate shvasate chaiva valgate cha punaH punaH |
romA~nchotthitagAtrashcha nidrayA chAbhibhUyate ||2-123-4
He yawned, sighed as well as trembled again and again. Hairs stood on his body due to excitement. His body became affected by sleep.
tataH sthairyaM samAlambya kR^iShNaH parapura~njayaH |
vikurvati mahAyogI jR^imbhamANaH punaH punaH ||2-123-5
Then regaining firmness, kR^iShNa, the one who conquered the cities of others, the great yogi, yawned again and again.
jvarAbhibhUtamAtmAnaM vij~nAya puruShottamaH |
so.asR^ijajjvaramanyaM tu pUrvajvaravinAshanam ||2-123-6
The best among men, realizing that his soul is possessed by jvara (fever), created another jvara (anti fever) to destroy the earlier jvara.
ghoraM vaiShNavamatyugraM sarvaprANibhaya~Nkaram |
saMsR^IShTavAnsa tejasvI taM jvaraM bhImavikramam ||2-123-7
kR^iShNa of great splendor created a huge, valiant, terrible and ferocious vaiShNava jvara, most terrifying for all beings.
jvaraH kR^iShNavisR^iShTastu gR^ihItvA taM jvaraM balAt |
kR^IShNAya hR^IShTaH prAyachChattaM jagrAha tato hariH ||2-123-8
The jvara created by kR^iShNa caught the other jvara by force quickly and handed over him to kR^iShNa happily. hari (kR^iShNa) accepted it.
tatastaM paramakruddho vAsudevo mahAbalaH |
svagAtrAtsvajvareNaiva niShkAsayata vIryavAn ||2-123-9
Then the highly powerful son of vasudeva (kR^iShNa) became highly angry. Valiant kR^iShNa expelled the jvara (fever) from his body using the jvara (anti fever) created by him.
Avidhya bhUtale chainaM shatadhA kartumudyataH |
vyaghoShata jvarastatra bhoH paritrAtumarhasi ||2-123-10
He began to swing the body of jvara to split it in hundreds on earth. Then the jvara shouted: O! Please save me!
AviddhyamAne tasmiMstu kR^ShNenAmitatejasA |
asharIrA tato vANI hyantarikShAdabhAshata ||2-123-11
As kR^iShNa of incomparable splendor was swinging the body of jvara, a body less voice spoke from the sky:
kR^iShNa kR^iShNa mahAbAho yadUnAM nandivardhana |
mA vadhIrjvaramenaM tu rakShaNIyastvayAnagha ||2-123-12
kR^iShNa! O kR^iShNa! O the one with powerful arms! O the one who increases the happiness of the yAdava-s! Do not kill this jvara! O the one without any sin! It is to be protected by you!
ityevamukte vachane taM mumocha hariH svayam |
bhUtabhavyabhaviShyasya jagataH paramo guruH ||2-123-13
When these words were spoken, hari (kR^iShNa), the preceptor of the past, the present and the future universe, himself released the jvara (fever).
kR^iShNasya pAdayormUrdhnA sharaNaM so.agamajjvaraH |
evamukto hR^iShIkeshaM jvaro vAkyamathAbravIt ||2-123-14
That jvara, bowing at the feet of kR^iShNa with its head, sought refuge. The jvara who was released thus, spoke these words to the lord of the senses (kR^iShNa).
shR^iNuShva mama govinda vij~nApyaM yadunandana |
yo me manoratho deva taM tvaM kuru mahAbhuja ||2-123-15
(jvara said) O govinda (kR^iShNa)! Hear my words! O the son of yadu (kR^iShNa)! Hear what I am saying. O deva! O the one with powerful arms! Please do as per my wish!
ahameko jvarastAta nAnyo loke jvaro bhavet |
tvatprasAdAddhi devesha varamenaM vR^iNomyaham ||2-123-16
I am the only one jvara (fever) in the world. There shall not be another jvara. O lord of deva-s! With your pleasure, I seek this boon.
deva uvAcha
evaM bhavatu bhadraM te yathA tvaM jvara kA~NkShase |
varArthinAM varo deyo bhavAMshcha sharaNaM gataH ||2-123-17
deva (kR^iShNa) said:
Let it be so. Let there be good to you. O jvara! Let it be as per your wish. The seeker of the boons shall be given boons. You have sought refuge.
eka eva jvaro loke bhavAnastu yathA purA |
yo.ayaM mayA jvaraH sR^iShTo mayyevaiSha pralIyatAm ||2-123-18
There shall be only one jvara (fever) in the world as before. Let the jvara (anti fever) created by me, dissolve in me.
vaishampAyana uvAcha
evamukte tu vachane jvaraM prati mahAyashAH |
kR^iShNaH praharatAM shreShThaH punarvAkyamuvAcha ha ||2-123-19
vaishampAyana said:
(O janamejaya !) The one with high fame (kR^iShNa) spoke these words to jvara (fever). kR^iShNa, the best among strikers spoke again as follows:
vAsudeva uvAcha
shR^iNuShva jvara saMdeshaM yathA loke chariShyasi |
sarvajAtiShu vishrabdhaM yathA sthAvaraja~Ngame ||2-123-20
The son of vasudeva (kR^iShNa) said:
O jvara! Hear my message about the order by which you shall move fearless in the world among all beings, stationary as well as moving.
tridhA vibhajya chAtmAnaM matpriyaM yadi kA~NkShase |
chatuShpAdAnbhajaikena dvitIyena cha sthAvarAn ||2-123-21
If you desire what I like, divide your soul in three parts. With one part possess the quadrupeds, with the second part, possess the stationary.
tR^itIyo yashcha te bhAgo mAnuSheShUpapatsya te |
Your third part is suitable for residing among human beings.
tridhA bhUtaM vapuH kR^itvA pakShiShu tvaM bhava jvara ||2-123-22
chaturtho yastR^itIyasya bhaviShyati sa te dhruvam |
jvara! In this way dividing your body in three parts, you shall be present in all appropriate places. One fourth of your third part will definitely be present in birds.
ekAntarastR^itIyastu sa vai chAturthiko jvaraH ||2-123-23
The third variety of fever (jvara), when it occurs with a difference of one day, will be called ekAntara (one having a difference of one day), with two days difference will be called tijara and three days difference chAturthika javara.

mAnuSheShvabhibhedena vasa tvaM pravibhajya vai |
jAtiShvathAvasheShAsu nivasa tvaM shR^iNuShva me ||2-123-24
Dividing your form with these differences you shall reside in human beings and remaining beings. Hear me further.
vR^ikSheShu kITarUpeNa tathA sa~NkochapatrakaH |
pANDupatrashcha vikhyAtaH phaleShvAturyameva cha ||2-123-25
You shall reside in trees in the form of worms and insects, famous under the names of fever (jvara) causing shrinkage of leaves (sa~Nkochapatraka) and fever (jvara) causing yellowing of leaves (pANDupatraka). Also you shall reside in fruits under the name Atura (sick or having disease).
apAM tu nIlikAM vidyAchChikhodbhedena barhiNAm |
padminyAdau himo bhUtvA pR^ithivyAmapi choSharaH ||2-123-26
In water, you will be known as nIlikA. You will reside in peacocks under the name shikhodbheda, in lotus flowers as frost (hima) and on earth as saline soil.
gairikaH parvateShveva matprasAdAdbhaviShyasi |
goShvapasmArako bhUtvA khorakashcha bhaviShyasi ||2-123-27
With my pleasure, you shall reside among mountains as mouse (girika), among cows as epilepsy and disease of foot.
evaM tvaM bahurUpeNa bhaviShyasi mahItale |
darshanAtsparshanAchchApi prANinAM vadhameShyasi ||2-123-28
In this way, you shall live on the face of earth in many forms. You will be able to kill beings by looking or touching.
R^ite devamanuShyANAM nAnyastvAm visahiShyati |
No one will be able to bear you except deva-s and human beings.

kR^iShNasya vachanaM shrutvA jvaro hR^iShTamanA hyabhUt ||2-123-29
provAcha vachanaM kiMchitpraNamitvA kR^itA~njaliH |
vaishampAyana said:
Hearing these words of kR^iShNa, jvara became one with a happy mind. Bowing to kR^iShNa with folded hands, jvara said the following words:

sarvajAtiprabhutvena kR^ito dhanyo.asmi mAdhava ||2-123-30
jvara said:
O mAdhava (kR^iShNa)! You made me fortunate with the lordship of all beings (by being able to reside in all beings).
bhUyashcha te vachaH kartumichChAmi puruSharShabha |
tadAj~nApaya govinda kiM karomi mahAbhuja ||2-123-31
O the great bull among men! I wish to hear your words again. O govinda (kR^iShNa)! O the one with great arms! Order me! What shall I do?
    ahamasurakulapramAthinA
        tripurahareNa hareNa nirmitaH |
    raNashirasi vinirjitastvayA
        prabhurasi deva tavAsmi ki~NkaraH ||2-123-32
I, created by hara (shiva), the destroyer of tripura, the oppressor of demons was conquered in battle by you. Hence O deva! You are my lord and I am your servant.
    dhanyosmanugR^ihIto.asmi
        yattvayA matpriyaM kR^itam |
    Aj~nApaya priyaM kiM te
        chakrAyudha karomyaham ||2-123-33
I am fortunate and I am blessed. You have done what I like. Order me! O the one having chakra as weapon (kR^iShNa)! What shall I do?

jvarasya vachanaM shrutvA vAsudevo.abravIdvachaH |
vaishampAyana said:
(O janamejaya!) Hearing the words of jvara, the son of vasudeva (kR^iShNa) said the following words:
abhisaMdhiM shR^iNuShvAdya yattvAM vakShyAmi nishchayAt ||2-123-34
Lord kR^iShNa said:
Definitely I shall tell you our agreement. Now hear me.
shrIbhagavAnuvAcha
    mahAhave tava mama cha dvayorimaM
        parAkramaM bhujabalakevalAstrayoH |
    praNamya mAmekamanAH paThettu yaH
        sa vai bhavejjvara vigatajvaro naraH ||2-123-35
In this great battle, you and I used only the power of our arms for our valiance. The one who recites the following, bowing to me with concentrated mind shall become devoid of all fevers (jvara).
tripAdbhasmapraharaNastrishirA navalochanaH |
sa me prItaH sukhaM dadyAtsarvAmayapatirjvaraH ||2-123-36
jvara , the lord of all diseases, with three feet, having ashes as the weapon, with three heads and nine eyes, shall be pleased with me and provide comfort to me.
    AdyantavantaH kavayaH purANAH
   .    sUkShmA bR^ihanto.apyanushAsitAraH |
    sarvA~njvarAnghnantu mamAniruddha-
        pradyumnasa~NkarShaNavAsudevAH ||2-123-37
Those who are at the beginning and end, those who are wise, those who are ancient, those who are subtle, abundant and great instructors, the son of vasudeva (kR^iShNa ), sa~NkarShaNa (balarAma), pradyumna and aniruddha, may be pleased and remove all my fevers.
evamuktastu kR^iShNena jvaraH sAkShAnmahAtmanA |
provAcha yadushArdUlamevametadbhaviShyati ||2-123-38
jvara who was told thus by kR^iShNa, the real great soul, told the tiger of yAdava-s: Then, let it be so.
varaM labdhvA jvaro hR^iShTaH kR^iShNAchcha samayaM punaH |
praNamya shirasA kR^iShNamapakrAntastato raNAt ||2-123-39
jvara, who received the boon from kR^iShNa became happy and made the agreement with him. He bowed to kR^iShNa, lowering his head and went away, leaving the battlefield.
iti shrImahAbhArate khileShu harivaMshe viShNuparvaNi jvarakR^iShNasaMvAde trayoviMshatyadhikashatatamo.adhyAyaH
Thus this the one hundred and twentythird lesson of viShNuparva, harivaMsha, khila of mahAbhArata, jvara defeated, gets a boon.
